The Lagos State Government on Saturday demolished the headquarters of the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P, Taskforce at the old toll gate on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Hakeem Adedeji, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences, told journalists that the demolition was carried out on the orders of of the state government.

“The reason for the demolition is to the best knowledge of the governor because he was the one who directed that the buildings should be pulled down in the interest of the public,’’ he said.

Mr. Adedeji said he believed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode must have issued the directive based on the abandonment of the building and its conversion to a hideout by miscreants.

“On getting here, we could not find any Federal Government official inside the building, rather, we found street urchins.
“There is need to avoid that and that is why we believe that if the building is demolished, no one will use it as a hideout,” he said.
The chairman noted that the structure ought to have been demolished since June 22, but that due process had to be followed before carrying out the demolition.

“All these are geared towards ensuring that the rights of the citizens are not infringed upon.’’
The debris and heaps of documents used by the agency were evacuated from the site.

The decision to demolish the building might not be unconnected to the smooth working relationship between the Lagos government and the federal government with both now led by the same political party, the APC.

Earlier in the year, former Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos wrote to former President Goodluck Jonathan over the presence of the officials, who claimed to have been set up by the Presidency, to publicly state their functions. Messrs. Fashola and Jonathan belonged to opposing parties and both governments disagreed on a lot of matters in Lagos State including security, traffic and road maintenance.

lol Ambode wants to continue breaking from where Fashola stopped. Good decision by the state government tho, Any little space those Agberos see, they'll imediately claim "omo o nile". If the building is useless, it should be brought down. But if the building isn't on the wrong side of the road, then i see no reason why it should be broken, it should serve other purposes, except the state government is playing Anti party here. That's because the government if willing can chase out those thugs and maybe renovate and use the building for other purposes. But authority has spoken, nothing can change it.

i smell belle here ooooo...... This is just like give a dog a bad name and hang it

Why not convert the building into something useful?......

So because it was GEJ that built it, it should be demolished. You should remember that it was not GEJ's money that was used in building the place but our money.

Just because of bad belle una dey waste our tax money.

APC government should continue, your clock is ticking away, Nigerians are waiting for change.

Instead of the government to renovate and convert the building into some sorta office or lease it out to interested persons or even utilize it for something that would yield profit ... They feel demolishing it is the best idea. By doing the former, they could have turned "waste to a source of wealth.." .
And they think we are coconut-water-filled-headed-citizens to even bring that rubbish statement of the government being an APC government at both state and federal level as an unintelligent way of telling us that they are not being biased about their decision......

A state government demolish a federal government building? I'm in support of demolishing illegal buildings though to make way for meaningful development. All those clumsy houses in lagos mainland like yaba, surulere, oyingbo up to Maryland and ikeja should all be brought down and their owners compensated. And construct wide roads and more inner roads. All the houses by the expressway from Ozumba mbadiwe to Ajah should all be demolished and construct at least 8-lane expressway. Wish ambode should make me his commissioner for town planning, I will order for the demolition of at least 100,000 houses in lagos and construct wide roads and overhead bridges there.
The federal government should think of constructing 4th, 5th and 6th mainland bridges in lagos

Nigerians have been crying for the unavailability of adequate infrastructure in the country. Instead of this burukutu drinking party called APC to convert the building to something else or use it for another purpose, they demolish it. This is the change..APC full of dullards & drunkards
