Scream

This is a veritable jump-fest of shock and horror. With Drew Barrymore, getting killed off in the first five minutes the scene is set for a real scary ride, but this movie has a sense of humour as well as gore galore. And with references to more than 10 other horror flicks, Scream really knows how to raise the fear factor.

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

Not since The Exorcist has possession been so truly terrifying. Nineteen-year-old Emily Rose dies shortly after undergoing an exorcism courtesy of her local priest (apparently, they still believed priests to take bad things out of children and not the other way round tongue). He is subsequently put on trial for homicide and a young female lawyer is bought in to hammer it out with him in court. Was this a real possession or insanity? Either way, when we see what Emily sees in her descent into death – a sleepless night is guaranteed.

The Haunting

Don't bother with the 1999 remake of this, the original 1963 film is perhaps the best haunted-house film ever. What you don't see is infinitely more frightening than what you do, and not a severed head or bloody corpse in sight. The atmosphere of this film will lower the temperature of any room to a suitably shivery level, and is guaranteed to chill you to the bone.

Silence Of The Lambs

This film had a double whammy of horror with the presence of Hannibal Lecter plus the psycho he was helping FBI agent Clarice Starling to hunt down. Hannibal may be a learned man but they do say it's the quiet ones you have to watch.

Re: Favourite Horror Movies. . . . by spikedcylinder: 9:55am On Mar 03, 2009
Saw

With each sick task the victims have to complete to remain alive, the gore stakes are raised, culminating in a very nasty soil-job. A sneaky twist at the end and some very nasty torture contraptions ensures this film will haunt you for days.

The Shining

Jack Nicholson is scary at the best of times, but give the man an axe and an isolated hotel to look after and he's positively demonic. Waves of blood, spooky girl ghosts and a little boy with the 'gift' of second-sight make this a fearful film for nights alone.

Re: Favourite Horror Movies. . . . by spikedcylinder: 10:00am On Mar 03, 2009
A Nightmare On Elm Street

Freddy Kruger starts off as a fairytale told to children by their parents to make them behave, but soon he's grabbing them in their sleep and bringing them into his very own nightmare where he's been sharpening his knives; which also happen to double as fingers.  shocked shocked shocked

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

From the very beginning you're willing these stupid teenagers not to go in, to leave well alone but do they? Of course not. Horror abounds when they get sliced and diced at the hands of a psycho with a chainsaw and a severe self-esteem problem. Original or remake, it'll give you the willies.

Alien

In this 1979 flick, Nostromo is called a "perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility." Which makes the alien an ideal movie monster in this beautifully designed, symphonically paced, all-time scary science-fiction thriller, scripted by Dan O'Bannon and directed by Ridley Scott. The crabby Nostromans are, in a way, the alien's pediatricians: they see it in five gestations, from its incubation through birth (bursting out of a crew member's chest), childhood and adolescence, into its final mature grandeur. Sigourney Weaver survived to star in three sequels.

Carrie

Carrie is a 1976 American horror film directed by Brian De Palma and written by Lawrence D. Cohen, based on the novel by Stephen King. The film and the novel deal with a socially outcast teenage girl, Carrie White, who discovers she possesses telekinetic powers after being subjected to endless humiliation by her peers, teachers, and psychological torture by her mother. The film stars Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Betty Buckley, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, William Katt and John Travolta.

Les Diaboliques

At a seedy French boarding school, The headmaster (Paul Meurisse) tyrannizes both his fragile wife (Véra Clouzot) and his no-nonsense mistress (Simone Signoret). They plot to kill the bastard, drowning him in a bathtub and dumping his body in the school swimming pool. Then a few students say they've seen him; the drained pool yields no corpse; and one night, when she's alone, the wife hears familiar typing in her late husband's room,  Henri-Georges Clouzot directed this dank, peerless exercise in nerve-jangling.

A puzzle to my bloodthirsty brothers, who cant get enough of porn and horror, and haven't succeeded in making an addict of me, though they haven't stopped trying. I caught the suckers watching porn when we were teens and I asked them what they saw in the thing. They said, Ah, it's very sweet, there's a story in it, it's just like an ordinary movie, only they're naked most of the time. You'll like it. Watch.
It was supremely gross. So I just tuned out or read a book when they were watching the yeye thing, or confisticated it outright. But some of their horror I watched. The most horrific was Cannibal Holocaust, which I spotted at my brother's. And the yeye guy now has a kid o! After giving him hell about that I watched it, and it was HORRIFIC!!!
Why isn't Omen up there? You've seen it, haven't you?

The Skeleton Key

A young woman helping care for an invalid in New Orleans finds herself caught in the middle of morbid going-ons centered around a group of Hoodoo (Not Voodoo, it's of a different culture. Voodoo is Haitian while Hoodoo is an old African American magic that just like Voodoo only works if you believe in it.) practitioners.

I couldn't sleep in my room alone for many weeks after watching this one. I kept repeating "Papa Justify and Mama Cecile" in my dreams.

*shivers* shocked

For someone who hates horror movies, I've seen most of the list and I can tell you that nuthin compares to the fright and sleepless nights that you will get from watching "The exorcism of Emily Rose"  by far the scariest movie I have and probably will ever watch. It doesn't help too when you watch it at night and ALONE!!!

Skeleton key was freaky but not to the level of Omen and Nightmare on elm street.

And you accidentally watched a hundred movies. All horror. :DNotice how the truly scary ones don't have a lot of gore, but this sick,creepy,heart-attack inducing atmosphere. Is Emily Rose as bad as Cannibal Holocaust or The Omen 1 and 2? Not that it matters. So not going near any.

you hit that right on the head. Gory doesn't = scary, which is why all dem "Saw" n co. to me are not really close to Emily Rose and Omen. Of all the above you mentioned I think Emily Rose is the freakiest hands down.

The music (like in most movies) is what really drives the fear factor especially in Omen . . . I found that once I muted the sound it it wasn't so bad  grin

Jeepers Creepers

Bickering siblings Darry and Trish are driving home for college break when they make a horrific and bizarre discovery in an old church basement. Break may have to wait as Darry and Trish are relentlessly pursued by The Creeper, a creature who who is hell-bent on eating them. Gore, tragedy, and an unexpected ending ensue.

Yea, I remember that! Her boyfriend was a rare gem! You remember where they were performing the exorcism in her room and she climbed her room walls and started scratching the walls like a bloody maniac. That girl has got some strength and she tried with the acting! I wonder why she doesn't do more movies.

American horror movies are so dumb.

Get some dumb "hot" girl
Have her frolicking around
Find some creepy ass house, have no ideqa who/what lives there
Decides she's gonna take a shower cos she's "dumb and hot"
Get chopped into pieces cos despite being "hot", we cant forget that she's daft
