I can't speak for the entire house, but this is how I feel… It immediately drops the apartment's value… Although I'll be leaving the building, their apartments drop 30% in value… I'm no expert in the details, but the price goes down if Ethiopians come.

Blood scandal could strain Israel-Africa relations

JERUSALEM (Reuter) - Israel's ambassador to Ethiopia said Monday the uproar at home over the routine disposal of blood donations from Ethiopian immigrants could put a strain on the Jewish state's relations with African countries.

Avi Granot said in an Israel radio interview from Addis Ababa the crisis came just as Israel was working to persuade the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to cancel a decision equating Zionism -- the belief in a Jewish state -- with racism.

"Of course this question has particular importance now when just these days we are trying with all our might to cancel the decision 'Zionism is racism' at the OAU conference coming up here soon," he said.

Thousands of black Jews, secretly airlifted to Israel in the 1980's and 1990's, rioted in Jerusalem Sunday after learning Israel's blood banks were routinely discarding their donations for fear of AIDS.

Israeli officials, trying to quell the rage, met community leaders and promised to re-examine the blood policy.

An Israeli foreign ministry spokesman said the OAU passed a resolution in the 1960's that mentions Zionism along with South African apartheid as a form of racism.

The spokesman, Danny Shek, said South Africa was working toward cancelling the resolution as it joins the OAU, a move that was also in Israel's interest.

Ambassador Granot said he had met Ethiopia's foreign minister to explain the matter and told him: "Malice does not need to be attributed when stupidity is enough."

Ethiopian radio, monitored by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), said Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin called in the ambassador and voiced his concern over the demonstration.

Granot said while originally the allegation of racism against Israel referred to the Arab-Israeli conflict, the fury of Ethiopian Jews over the blood policy could give the racism slur a new meaning.

Israeli Health Minister Ephraim Sneh Monday ordered the blood banks to stop discarding donations from Ethiopians and freeze any new units from them until the policy is re-examined by a commission appointed by Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

Sneh said he expected the commission to turn in its findings within 30 days. One question it would study is whether to define all of Israel's 60,000 Ethiopian immigrants as a risk group for AIDS, whose blood could not be used in transfusions, he said.

"Surely the mistake was not done with malice but out of a desire not to hurt (their feelings)," Sneh told Israel radio. "But there was in fact injury and the mistake was the decision was not shared with the community."

Israeli Textbooks and Children’s Literature Promote Racism and Hatred Toward Palestinians and Arabs

Israeli school textbooks as well as children’s storybooks, according to recent academic studies and surveys, portray Palestinians and Arabs as “murderers,” “rioters,” “suspicious,” and generally backward and unproductive. Direct delegitimization and negative stereotyping of Palestinians and Arabs are the rule rather than the exception in Israeli schoolbooks.

Professor Daniel Bar-Tal of Tel Aviv University studied 124 elementary, middle- and high school textbooks on grammar and Hebrew literature, history, geography and citizenship. Bar-Tal concluded that Israeli textbooks present the view that Jews are involved in a justified, even humanitarian, war against an Arab enemy that refuses to accept and acknowledge the existence and rights of Jews in Israel.

“The early textbooks tended to describe acts of Arabs as hostile, deviant, cruel, immoral, unfair, with the intention to hurt Jews and to annihilate the State of Israel. Within this frame of reference, Arabs were delegitimized by the use of such labels as ‘robbers,’ ‘bloodthirsty,’ and ‘killers,’” said Professor Bar-Tal, adding that there has been little positive revision in the curriculum over the years.

Bar-Tal pointed out that Israeli textbooks continue to present Jews as industrious, brave and determined to cope with the difficulties of “improving the country in ways they believe the Arabs are incapable of.”

Hebrew-language geography books from the 1950s through 1970s focused on the glory of Israel’s ancient past and how the land was “neglected and destroyed” by the Arabs until the Jews returned from their forced exile and revived it “with the help of the Zionist movement.”

“This attitude served to justify the return of the Jews, implying that they care enough about the country to turn the swamps and deserts into blossoming farmland; this effectively delegitimizes the Arab claim to the same land,” Bar-Tal told the Washington Report. “The message was that the Palestinians were primitive and neglected the country and did not cultivate the land.”

This message, continued Bar-Tal, was further emphasized in textbooks by the use of blatant negative stereotyping which featured Arabs as: “unenlightened, inferior, fatalistic, unproductive and apathetic.” Further, according to the textbooks, the Arabs were “tribal, vengeful, exotic, poor, sick, dirty, noisy, colored” and “they burn, murder, destroy, and are easily inflamed.”

A call for support to African-Iraqis as they participate seriously for the first time in elections. 31 January is D-Day for them.

The recent election to highest office in the United States was not uneventful…given the tsunami of interest and support seen around the world…

A black man assuming this position has not only stunned the planet, but has mobilized all those underpressed and overlooked to begin to stand tall and to assume their rightful place in their societies.

One of the places where this has happened is in Iraq. Basra has been in the news over these years,but most of what made the airwaves and the punditications was the war and its effects. But, I believe, that nowhere has it been revealed or even acknowledged the diversity (ethnic, yes) of the Iraqis - that there are real black - African-Iraqis - living there.

In Iraq’s deep south another American-led revolution is stirring. But this time it is being sparked by popular voice, not bombs.

The country’s 1m-plus black citizens have tapped into Obama-mania like few other groups across the Arab world. For them Obama’s inauguration was the dawn of a civil rights movement that they never had the impetus to strive for.

Black Iraqis will this week stand for the first time as an electoral bloc in provincial polls that will help shape Iraq in its slow transition to full sovereignty and possibly help shake off the stereotype that places them near the top of the heap in a nation of persecuted minorities.

Like the marsh Arabs to the north of their relative stronghold in Basra, black Iraqis are an underclass who find it near impossible to rise above their time-worn status of hard-labourers and peasants. Up to 50% of black Iraqis migrated to the Arabian Peninsula after the birth of Islam 1,500 years ago.

The rest have come steadily in the centuries since, some trafficked as slaves and others lured by broken promises of riches. All have been typecast, “just as the blacks of America were”, said Jalal Dhiyab, number two on the electoral list of the Secretary of the Free Movement of Iraqis.

“We joined this election because we felt we could break the wall surrounding Iraqi society and the climate of fear we have felt for generations,” he said.

“Black people have been treated very poorly throughout Iraqi history. The oppression has stopped us from joining many levels of society. It has restricted our education. We have become a social underclass. We are taking part in the new elections to give black Iraqis a new purpose in Iraq.”

Obama’s victory was a milestone in the history of democracy throughout the world, said Dhiyab.

“It is a victory for freedom. He has experienced suffering and seen serious challenges in his life. And yet he has reached the White House where decisions are made that affect all the people in the world. We hope that Obama’s policy in Iraq differs from Bush’s policy here. The Bush regime destroyed lives and infrastructure and fractured the whole of Iraqi society.”

The Free Movement of Iraqis is putting forward eight candidates in the provincial poll, in which 1,272 candidates are standing for 35 seats in the Basra province. Around 30% of the nominated candidates are women.

The polls will be held on 31 January, ahead of national elections later in the year.
