THE STORY OF THE PHOENIX: TSUNAMI SURVIVOR SIGNS FOR SPORTING LISBON 11 YEARS AFTER HE LOST HIS MOM AND TWO BROTHERS TO THE DISASTER! On boxing day in 2004, a giant wave caused by an 8.2 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean resulted in the untimely death of 230,000 people across 14 countries including Indonesia. Martunis made headlines as the little boy who survived the earthquake in a Portuguese jersey. He went to play football when the Tsunami struck. He survived in the waters by holding on to trees and other objects before land became visible. He held on to life.
