The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has explained its main reason for kicking against the appointment of Mrs Amina Zakari as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, the appointment of Zakari means INEC is no more independent.

The party said it is privy to the fact that “Zakari who has a strong relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari and a very prominent APC Northwest governor is collaborating with the ruling party to post Resident Electoral Commissioners of its choice to Kogi and Bayelsa ahead of the forthcoming governorship elections in those states.”

“President Buhari, in appointing Mrs Zakari, failed to take into cognizance the moral call to detach himself from the operation of the electoral body thereby completely eroding the independence of the commission,” Metuh said in the statement.

“We want Nigerians to know that with this appointment, INEC has been stripped of its independence and can no longer command the confidence and respect of the citizens and all other critical stakeholders in the nation’s electoral process,” the statement stated further.

“We however find it astonishing, discouraging and disheartening that the spokesperson of the President will address Nigerians and lie to the entire citizenry that Mrs Zakari never had any relationship with the President or an APC Governor in the Northwest. This is the height of deception coming from the respected office of the President of our dear country.

And this is the tragedy of Jonathans meekness/surrender. . Handing over to one buhari with all his pre-historic fatalistic feeling of self-entitlement was/is a disaster! It can only measure up in diabolically comparative terms to starting off the fourth republic with a brute of an ex-general as the president. Jonathans achievements in deepening democratic ethos in this country through his selfless conduct while in power is about to be rubbished by a fake democrat.. . For all his over emphasised shortcomings, Goodluck was an epitome of civility, respect for the rule of law, and a symbol to selfless detrablised politics. . Yaradua tried in this regarrd too. . That can not be said of obasanjo and now, with this appointment, Buhari. . The tendency to import ex army officers with all their brutish pedigree into governance has been haunting this democracy since 1999. It seems to me to be the worst mistake made by this over traumatised generation within the last two decades. This country would have been far ahead if she stuck with PURE civilians right from the start of the fourth republic , rather than importing totally empty but highly opionated ex this and ex thats into the presidential villa.

If buhari could appoint acting INEC chairperson within 12hrs,why is he delaying his ministerial appointment for over 35 days?I think buhari has a shady mind in the appointment of that woman!moreso its suspisious to v appointed an INEC chairperson from the same region with the president!

Has the acting chairperson done anything that links her with APC?


When Jega was appointed, wasn't it in the favor of PDP? And if not so why was he been persuaded to take a sabbatical leave when the going gets tough for the PDP?

How was Jegas appointment in favour of PDP? Jega was a former ASUU president renowned for his radical views. Anybody who knows his history must be aware that he will only listen to himself. . I don't know who peersuaded him to leave. Suffice it to say that if Jonathan desperately wanted him out, willy-nilly, he would have gone. Ask Sanusi.
