Nigeria has sadly become synonymous with epileptic power struggles while South Africa has stepped up the game with its solar school backpack innovation.

This new contraption is built in such a way that it lights up homes, particularly for schoolchildren to study at night. This is not seen as a shared fate for Nigeria’s study environment, as innovations in power supply still fall below breaking edge technology.

According to reports, a 21-year South African and her partner invented the renewable energy solution called “Repurposed schoolbag”, a bag made from recycled plastic to enable children living in remote regions who do not have access to electricity to study at night.

These bags come equipped with integrated solar panels to provide a renewable light source for kids who walk long distances to school. The bag is charged during the day and used as a lamplight capable of powering up to 12 hours for evening study sessions.

The scheme is intended to make the trip to school easier while also extending their study time into the evenings, thereby boosting their education in the process.

solar bag packs2For many kids living in rural and non-electrified parts of South Africa, the final school bell doesn’t just signal the end of another day of learning. Instead, it also means the beginning of another difficult trek through busy and dangerous roads to get back home in time to complete their homework before sunset.

The bags sell for 250 South African Rand, about N5000 but solar bag packsorganizations such as Red Bull, SAB Foundation, and Standard Bank are now funding the innovation to sponsor students in impoverished communities.

This invention has made work easier for students who read at night, which is cost effective, as they will not be subjected to buying fuel to power lamps or generators. The need for such becomes unnecessary as there is now a cleaner and more potent source of energy.

The question now remains, should the solar backpack be initiated in Nigeria? grin

I'm so so ashamed of Nigeria. If we had stable or constant power supply:

we wouldn't have any need for this foreign products to aid sub-standard living,

our country wouldn't be a dumping ground for foreign products that would cripple the developing local firms and industries,

we wouldn't rely on imports thereby sustaining the productive economy of foreign countries while ours keep falling below expectation,

our great unemployment rate which is one of the major reasons for the increase in crime over the years would drastically reduce by more than half since electricity would enable small businesses thrive along with the larger ones,

our products would vie with products from developed countries on the international scale,

We will make giant strides in the field of science and technological advancement,

high cost of living will fall while the standard of living, distinguishing feature of all developed countries, will improve,

the value of the naira will rise against other currencies,

government internal revenue to fight crime and tackle development projects will increase, a natural by-product of self-employment and the mass springing up of small-scale businesses that rely on electricity to thrive,

poverty rate would dry up quickly with stable power supply.

I have no time to talk about the foreign investments this would attract and the long term benefits we stand to gain,

the improvement in the quality of education it will guarantee,

and ultimately how it provides the essential justification of our tenacious grip to the title 'Giant of Africa'.

Nigeria has been so long on the road to development but with stable power supply Nigeria will be deemed by the world to have truly arrived.
