The first thing to avoid when critiquing something, is demonstrating subjective bias against the subject matter or writer.

This is important if you want to be taken seriously.

The language you use when critiquing, is also significant.

Avoid the use of superlatives if the subject is something you are not comfortable with, do not be overly emotional in your efforts to "badmouth" another person's work. This especially applies in situations where you disapprove of the type of work, or the genre. If you know you cannot make an informed review of the work in question, then it might be better to refrain from giving any until you have educated yourself more on what it entails.

Do you have to be intelligent in order to intelligently critique literature?

Well, this is a trick question in a way.

However, I think what you need is the ability to focus on the work rather than the person, as well as the subject matter.

Its basically the same premise as saying the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. ( no porn plz).
