Police enforcing Islamic law in Kano State on
Wednesday destroyed some 240,000 bottles of
beer, the latest move in a wider crackdown on
behaviour deemed “immoral” in the area.
The bottles had been confiscated from trucks
coming into the city in recent weeks, said officials
from the Hisbah, the patrol team which enforces
the strict Islamic law, known as Sharia.
AFP reports that Sharia enforcers called Hisbah
destroyed over 240,000 bottles of beer along with
over 8,000 litres of local brew called burukutu .
Kano’s Hisbah chief, Aminu Daurawa, said at the
bottle-breaking ceremony, he had “the ardent
hope this will bring an end to the consumption of
such prohibited substances.”
A large bulldozer smashed the bottles to shouts
of “Allahu Ahkbar” (God is great) from supporters
outside the Hisbah headquarters in Kano.
Kegs containing more than 8,000 litres of a local
alcoholic brew called burukutu and 320,000
cigarettes were also destroyed.
“We hope this measure will help restore the
tarnished image of Kano,” said Daurawa.
Since September, the Hisbah have launched
sweeping crackdowns and made hundreds of
arrests in Kano following a state government
directive to cleanse the commercial hub of so-
called “immoral” practices.
The 9,000-strong moral police force works
alongside the civilian police but also has other
duties, including community development work
and dispute resolution.
Alcohol is typically easy to find in Kano, including
at hotels and bars in neighbourhoods like Sabon
Gari, inhabited by the city’s sizeable Christian
minority.
But the Hisbah boss vowed that this was set to
change.
“We hereby send warning to unrepentant
offenders that Hisbah personnel will soon embark
on an operation into every nook and cranny of the
state to put an end to the sale and consumption
of alcohol and all other intoxicants,” Daurawa
said.

Well, Sharia court is recognised as a valid institution by the Nigeria government, so it has to be. Sharia in the north is definitely imposing.

This is an aberration! What happens to the Nigerian Constitution that specifically gaurantees Right to Property Its very clear that Kano State operates a constitution different from the constituion of the federal republic of Nigeria.

Every time things like these happen, it creates a damning indictment on the government of the state in which it happens and subsequently on the FG too.

If a state has secular police and is run by a secular constitution, why should a religious police/enforcement team (hisbah) punish legal business entities for doing their legal businesses?

If Kano wants to be run by Sharia and destroy beer bottles (not because they were smuggled or illegally manufactured but because a religion forbids it) why should the government not condemn and proscribe these kinds of actions? When Excesses like these are not checked, previous excesses are exceeded and before you know it some form of terrorism has been festered!

If a government does not see a reason to condemn some locally constituted police force, not enacted by Nigerian constitution, which assigns to herself the power to destroy the products of legally established and registered, tax-paying business entities, because of a religious belief, without recourse to the Nigerian constitution, then the same government has no reasonable moral reason to condemn the Niger-delta militants when they destroy pipelines. Abi na how?! I hope the FG will prove its mettle by condemning illegalities such as these.

And by the way, if Kano (and some other states) do not want "haram" products and lifestyles in their domain, they should remember to tell the FG to make sure that no revenue generated from "haram" products/processes isbe shared with them likewise.

This is plain stupidity. The same Kano state Government will share from the revenues that are accrued to the government from the Alcoholic sector. I don't see why the FG should share these revenues with them. These people don't know the economic effect of their actions. I won't tell them to adopt secularism, all I want from them is to protest to the FG to stop giving them revenues from "haram" companies.

It is a pity

I have said it many times .
Buhari might be the last Nigerian president.
Nothing to do with mend ,opc or radio Biafra.
But if he does not check the excesses of his socially and educationally backward region ,they will cast off into the desert.
All this does not stop the north from being the highest consumers of drugs .
The only direction I see them heading , is towards the path of destruction.
I cannot believe how a people can be so stupidd and dumb as to stop practicing their own culture ,norms and laws and start practising and alien one. A religious one at that.

E.g Islamic mass weddings for people who cannot afford it
Where their own superior tradition and customs requires the groom to prove the ability to care for his future family by buying a heavy bride (cows , sheeps, goats ,food ).
If you cannot pay the dowry, you shouldn't marry .

No beer ,something which most cannot afford anyway .
Means no nightlife
Means No tourist
Means less taxes
Means Less money to spend on education, health
Means more poverty
Mean more potential recruits for terrorists.
Very soon the Sudanese and Arab types will move in amongst them and start killing them off to take their land .
That is exactly what has happened and is still happening in North Africa.

Those Northern governments are hypocrites. They set-up a parallel police which thÉy call "hisbah" but they will never support creation of state police. They are more loyal to their Sharia system but will never allow true federalism. They destroy and discourage "haram" companies and products but will always share from the taxes of these same companies. In fact they will demand for higher percentage. How can terrorists groups like BH not succeed in such environment?
