Senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have warned the Federal Government against using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to intimidate them, vowing to resist such attempt.

They asked President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that some people do not use his name to misuse state machinery in fighting their perceived political opponents in the guise of waging anti-corruption war.

A statement on Friday by Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, on behalf of PDP Like Mind Senators, said any attempt to unleash the anti-graft agencies on members of the National Assembly as a result of the leadership crisis rocking the legislative chamber would not only be constitutionally and lawfully resisted, but could have dire consequences on governance in the country.

The statement read, “As much as we are not against the anti-corruption agencies performing their statutory duties, the invitation by EFCC to the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, clearly indicated that the threat by a group within the National Assembly to use all means to fight the National Assembly leadership is now being carried out.

“Nigerians should ask the EFCC what it was waiting for all this while before realising that it would need to invite Mrs. Saraki when she left the Government House with her husband in 2011. And why should the invitation come a few days after a senator threatened that his group would bring the senate president down?

“We also think that the same witch-hunt that the wife of the senate president is suffering now is the same thing happening to his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who the police have been disturbing. But at the right time, we will jointly make our opinion known on the harassment of our leaders.”

The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Friday said the invitation of Mrs. Toyin Saraki, wife of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was politically motivated.

But during a media briefing in Ilorin after the state APC’s executive meeting, the state APC Chairman, Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani, described the EFCC’s invitation as a calculated attempt to dent the image of the senate president and his wife.

He cautioned EFCC to avoid being used for political vendetta.

Balogun-Fulani said, “The EFCC’s invitation of Mrs. Saraki was a shock to the APC in Kwara State because five years after her husband left office as the governor, the anti-graft agency thought it wise to invite his wife for questioning.”

EFCC and other graft agencies must desist from being used as political tools for witch hunt by the government in power.
Buhari must not fight the legislative arm of government, any attempt will spell doom for him and the smooth running of his government..

This is all about accountability and transparency. If PDP have no skeleton to hide, then EFCC should be allowed to do the job.

Some of the senators were past governors that looted their states dry. It will be morally right to jail them at least if not for anything, to bring sanity back into our society. Please Efcc go after them, both PDP and Apc thieves. I want those that stole our money to return it and go to jail even for one month.

Why should anyone have a problem with EFCC if their hands are clean?

Unfortunately for PDP, they don't have the control of the Senate. They can't threaten the president with impeachment because getting 2/3 of the house for that is near impossibility.

This is a season of probe. So, let anti graft bodies do their work. Or do the sinators want those bodies to go on sleep mode as they were under JonaTAN?

from my own perspective, Buhari is just doing gragra. Probably, he want us to believe he is fighting corruption....

Check those who have been arrested by EFCC , how many have they prosecuted?

This is how it is going to be, arrested them, take them to court and they bail themselves out.... That's all

At least no one we say he is not fighting corruption... Lol

Yes they don't have 2/3 to impeach him but they have enough number to ground his government. Is Buhari ready to run with permanent secretaries for the rest of his tenure? What about budget approvals for ministries and agencies including the EFCC? What about confirmation for the post of INEC chairman and other board appointments? The likeminds would ground Buhari's government should he chose to fight them

Okay!! Why do you think the dullard is yet to appoint ministers? I can bet you that no Tinubu backed nominee would be cleared by the NASS.The yorubas in APC had better stay away from him should they ever hope to get any ministerial appointment.

PDP and its Senators are stupidd.
Asking where was EFCC all this while, they should channel that question to the previous administration or better still go and ask Lamorde where was him and his men (toothless bull dogs) all this while.

The era of " chop and chop" is over. Thank God for Buhari who is about bringing sanity to the system.

Any body that is found wanting or has a question to answer be it APC or PDP should not be spared.

You abrogate too much unreal power to the senators indeed.

1. Are you saying that when ministerial list is submitted to them and upon the names having been cleared by the necessary security agencies, the senate will refuse to clear them? Be rest assured that if anything close to unnecessary frustration of this simple process occurs, the battle will be between them and Nigerians. It won't be with the presidency.

2. Budget approval: In fact, I don't see how they will refuse to approve budget submitted by the presidency. They can slash budgets but there must be reasonable grounds. Besides, the presidency can actually ignore them in this area and spend as it deems fit. We have seen it with OBJ and even with GEJ where monies not budgeted or approved were spent without any reference to the senate position.

All in all, the NASS may not even be able to impact on PMB's deliverables beyond 20% to 30% of the total.

We cannot say because some senators don't want their past to be looked into, we should therefore ask EFCC/ICPC and others not to do their constitutional duties.

Stop that bunkum. Saraki was in opposition to Jonathan throughout his tenure, so the ex president would have welcomed any attempt by EFCC to whittle down his(Saraki's) influence. Jonathan is a gentleman to the core. He does not believe in vendetta like Buhari do.

Bros underate the NASS at your peril!!! The APC must accept that they have lost out of the control of the 8th NASS.Any attempt to use intimidation of legislators to force it to do it's biddings would be resisted!!! Stop using the term "Nigerians" when you want to defend your regional paraochial interests. We are not fools here.

Unless the NASS clears any nominee no minister will be appointed and there is nothing you can't do about it.Buhari would not dare appoint ministers or appropriate budgets without the requisite parliamentary approval!!! If he dares try to return us to dictatorship we would let him know no one has a monopoly over abuse of power and the rule of law as we don't operate in a zoo or banana republic!!!
