Will A Master's Degree Improve One's Employment Prospect? by temb: 9:31am On Jul 25, 2015
I recently just concluded my nysc this July and have since been trying to secure a job...Now I have been sending many applications since February but still no luck...

The question now is that if I acquire a masters degree, would that guarantee me a job in Nigeria...or everything is based on connection, because I am really confused. don't know whether I should use the little money I saved up during my nysc to pursue masters or I should keep on the job hunt.....

I would appreciate good advice from experienced people here and lastly I graduated with a 2.2 in the dept of metallurgical and materials engineering.

It actually depends on which section of the labor market u re looking at. My little experience in the construction industry shows that employment most times are based on years of experience and the certification for that skill. In the oil and gas section it is based on your school qualification and experience. I would suggest you learn a skill and back it up with a certification (if any) while you are still searching for a job. on the other hand do business but first study that business very well.

Guy just look for a professional certificate that will enhance your course and no master. Have friends who went for masters and still teach at small private schools. Profesional Certificates is the way now!!!!

A masters doesn't guarantee anything, for some jobs maybe(cos of your 2.2)
But majorly, as pointed out by someone above me, work experience does. Try and look for a place where you can be an intern(without pay if you don't get ones that pay and the cost of transport won't kill you) in a feild you pick interest in, that experience as time goes on will be what you'll use to apply for jobs, also, certifications in related fields can also help.
But I am not discouraging you, if you have sponsor, msc isn't a bad idea. It's always useful in future, you can still be applying for jobs and doing internship alongside.
Best of luck

My guy, I ve got a masters degree with distinction, but it dint give me a job until I added Certifications and experience to it. Though I started very small even with my Msc. Having an Msc is not a waste actually especially if its in engineering, I know people who have made it with M.Eng and u can even have a lucrative career in academics with a gud M.Eng. However adding Certifications can be cheaper and can yield immediate dividends but its no guarantee (I have seen guys with Nebosh and Bosiet) with no job, and I don't even have both though I will by next year, my Msc gave me an edge. In summary, God alone guarantees job not degree or certifications. An Msc will come in handy in d future but u can get some certifications, and rewrite ur CV to best potray ur skills then distribute it online to recruitment firms like jobberman, joblink etc. I hope this helps

Since you have made up your mind that landing a job in Nigeria now is based solely on connections, may it be so to you and you alone.

Allow others to hustle and get a job without man-know-man, please.

instead of wasting so much time looking for job,u can proceed for ur masters asap...work very hard in the programme to come out with at least a B(60%) (PhD grade)..that will give u a upper hand with regards to running a PhD and as well as searching for some kinds of jobs most especially lecturing jobs..

Nope it does not in anyway guarantee you a Job. Mine is in view..but you'd be scared to death should you see my portfolio..
I've acquired so many skills over the years and that's what had molded me into a formidable force the Market just can't seem to do without.

A City & Guilds [C&G] qualification in a highly specialised TECHNICAL skill is a much better value-for-money in our current labour market.

Getting a PAPER certificate with no/inappropriate skills is not only a WASTE of money but also a waste of precious TIME for the individual & society.

You dont need a masters to get most entry level jobs in Nigeria. However, having a master betters your chances of getting one. There is an extreme competition outside there and believe me,everything is an advantage.
My PG qualification stood me out at the interview for my current employment. I was told after I got it. As a matter of fact, the same organisation posted an advert a year after I got mine for a similar position and indicated boldly that a masters degree is a strong advantage.
Good luck wink

Not necessarily. The guys above me have said it all. Go for a professional course like project management, mba or ican

If you have masters degree and you don't know anything, trust me it will not perform miracles for you. i have masters in business education and it helped me secure a lecturing job among 300+ applicants. masters will give you an edge in the midst of BSc holders in any interview situation as much attention will be given to you, but the onus lie on u to convince every member of the interview panel that you are most suitable for the job. I thank you all.

I am particularly impressed with the responses so far. No infantile comments or jejune jokes

I think experience is far more advantageous.

I am a HR expert and during interviews, our concentration shifts from your paper qualifications to what you "know and what you can offer". Except if all the candidates are inexperienced, you can not be employed ahead of a highly experienced B.Sc holder just because you have a masters degree.
If you are just brilliant, even a masters degree won't make you intelligent and so when you meet intelligent panelists, your brilliance may not still help you get the job.
Masters in most cases only gives you the advantage of being shortlisted for an interview while your intelligence and Know - how gives you the job.
So, I will advice you strive to acquire experience anyhow you can and also get a professional certification. These two gives you immediate advantage.

A masters degree in Nigeria will not guarantee you a job but could certainly give you and edge. It usually counts as 2 years work experience in Nigeria.

Another thing from your write-up . . .
Do not under estimate the power of "connection" or networking as it is called in the corporate world. It is arguably the easiest way to get a job.
Seek out the decision makers in places you would like to work, approach them or find out where they hang out and have an informal discussion with/sell yourself to them.

With your major, MSc is not a bad idea. There will definitely more opportunities with a masters degree. There will also be chance to go into research and research in the area of metallurgy and materials generally is very actual and germane. There is a lot of opportunity out there. Wish you all the best and good luck.

Just as degrees has been messed up so also masters. Employers prefer experience to you many certificate. they question many employer will not fail to ask you to interview is what can you do differently that other can't.

I will advise you to start small by accepting even if is 30k job for experience sake. Multinational companies depends largely on experience.

Good luck
