So.. I got a call a while ago from one Mr David and this conversation transpired between us.

Mr David: Hello, is this Dominion?

Me: That's correct.

Mr David: I'm David, I got your contact details on Nairaland and I love your jobs. I have a project in Owerri and I'm hoping if you will be available to work for me too.

Me: That shouldn't be a problem Sir. Kindly send the drawings so as to give quote.

Mr David: The problem is that we didn't eventually follow the initial plan for we did a lot of amendments. You will have to take the trip to take your measurements and advice on what other things you can do for me.

Me: That's alright Sir. When do you want me to come around?

Mr David: They just started the roofing. I'll contact you again whenever I want you to come and send you the site supervisor's number because I wouldn't be in town.

Me: That's alright

Like I always do, I searched for the number(08154806413) on Truecaller immediately he dropped and the result was 'Patrick'. Searched on Nairaland, no match found. Eventually stored his number with Mr DavidPatrick Owerri NL grin

Fast forward to 2days ago. I was in Jos about to take a trip to Porthacourt to go measure and quote for a project when Mr David called again.

Mr David: Hello Dominion

Me: Good evening Sir.

Mr David: Will you be able to come around tomorrow? I need you to check the project and give a quote for we are on a fast track.

Me: Tomorrow is perfect Sir. I will be in Porthacourt, coming to Owerri when I'm done shouldn't be a problem.

Mr David: Good. Call me when you are in town.

Me: Alright Sir.

Now I remembered what a very popular painter on Nairaland(your guess is as good as mine) told me when we met at a site few weeks ago. How he was kidnapped after honouring an invitation to quote for a project. He was escorted by 4 harmed men every night to the ATM machine till he emptied over 600k in his account before he was released! Well... His way ain't my way. Owerri project is a reality grin

It was pretty late before I was done in Porthacourt but still made the trip to Owerri. Got to Owerri around 10pm, found my way to a nearby hotel and it was a new day.

I sent Mr David a text this morning that I'm in town, he replied that I should contact the site supervisor Mr Kingsley 08143060729 so he can take me to site. I did my 'as usual' searches but this time, I got no results.

No cause for alarm. Everything still seems normal. It's a happy day after all...

...I called Mr Kingsley and a THIN voiced man answered from the other end. He asked if I'm Dominion and I said Yes. He said he'd get back to me on how to meet ASAP as he also got personal business to attend to. Everything still seems fine. #nowahala

After waiting for over an hour, I called to inform him I've been expecting him to call back. He apologized and told me to relax, that he is busy with some things and he'd get back to me before 10am.

I immediately called Mr David. "Have you contacted my supervisor yet?" He asked. #MyFirstTest. I told him I have but don't think I'll wait for him anymore, my reason being the fact that his supervisor will be busy till 10am, a time not OK by me for I still have a long trip to take. I told him I just got the contact of a couple of friends in Owerri, that they'd help if i can get the site address. "Be patient with him" He replied. "I spoke with him and he said he wouldn't be able to meet with you earlier because of the ongoing sanitation, just wait for him as there will be restriction for you to move as well" He said. That was when I realize there is sanitation going on. "That's alright Sir" I replied. But he made a mistake already.

#HisFirstMistake. Why would he ask if I've contacted his supervisor in the first place when he's aware he will be meeting me late? Well.. God rested on the seventh day and I needed to find out what He created on day8. I played on...

...Mr Kingsley sent a text few mins after 10am. "Please can you go to Wethdral by MCC junction, from there take a cab to UMUORI and stop at Obi Motors. Call me when you get there" The text reads. I was thinking of precautionary measures to take when Mr Kingsley called to confirm if I had gotten his text.

Me: Should I come right now?

Mr Kingsley: Yes please! I have personal business to attend to.

Me: The thing is I told Oga I have a couple of friends in town whose contact I just got. They are on their way here already.

Mr Kingsley: You can send them the address na(losing the THIN voice). The site is a walking distance from Obi Motors, let me just show you and go attend to my business. You guys can locate one another when they get there. Please come right away! I'm late already for my business.

Me: Alright Boss.

I left the hotel and stopped an empty tri-cycle across the road. Bargained with the driver to take me to UMUORI. He agreed after a little protest the place being far away.

I took my seat behind him. Driven in style! GLOing with pride! I'm winning a project after-all. I checked my phone to confirm the bus-stop. Obi Motors! Nice!! Mr David once mentioned the project is 4units na... I'd just use my profit to buy a Starlet Jeep or a Portable Hummer at the bus-stop. So easy! This is a testimony!!! cheesy

We got to the bus-stop after like 15mins and I instructed the keke driver to turn and park some 50meters after the bus-stop. My phone rang almost immediately. As expected, it was my THIN voiced Mr Kingsley.

Mr Kingsley: Where are you now?

Me: I'm at MCC junction now. Trying to find my way to UMUORI.

Mr Kingsley. Ok. What about your friends, how many of them are coming?

Me: My friends are just two and they are driving down. Probably they have others with them, I can't say. Is it important?

Mr Kingsley: Sorry. But who is going to get here first? Your friends or you?

Me: I don't know. They said they are almost there the last time we spoke. Let me confirm and call you back Boss.

Mr Kingsley: Please do. I'm seriously late now.

I waited for some 5mins before I called back.

Me: Boss, my friends are at the bus-stop now but they can't seems to locate you. What cloth are wearing? So I can pass the info.

Mr Kingsley: How many are they? I'm with a friend at the third street. Call me when you get there.

I ignored his question and dropped, but called back in less than a minute.

Me: I'm here boss.

Mr Kingsley: Ok wait for me there. How many are your friends and what are you wearing?

Me: A summershade Polo and a windspray Jean(God Bless Dulux) grin

Mr Kingsley: Which one be windspray! Are you the one with a back-bag?

Meanwhile, I can see a young chap with a back-bag at the bus-stop.

Me: Bros, I thought you said you are with a friend at the third street!

I dropped the call before he could defend himself and I called Mr David immediately. Behold! My Kingsley's THIN voice answered from the other end. "What did you say you are wearing?"

Oh really! I tapped my now impatient keke driver, "Nna, start this thing make we go"

Driver: Where we dey go now Bros? And what of the person you dey wait for?

Me: Anywhere but here. I've been longing to visit this city! Na excursion I con do for Owerri and you will take me round the city. Besides, where person fit see beta Nnkwobi at this time of the day?

Driver: Na Mama Oluchi place for that FUTO side but her Nnkwobi too cost.

Me: Let's go there. Today na my birthday!

He whistles happily. It's still a happy day after-all.....

I am utterly mortified, honesty meeting a client after negotiation and several lengthy discussion on phone, there is no preparation for what is the reality on ground, to think I got a call from owerri. Thank God for life this is clearly an eye opener.

Whaooo......the same thing happened to me early this year, I got a call from owerri also and the person's name is my richard. I was busy then so I sent one of my experience staff to Owerri. I monitored him through phone calls till he got the 419 people. All of a sudden my staff phone was not reachable for over 4hrs. Infact, I could not do anything again for that period. It was later my staff called me with a strange number and said the people he met said they won't release him unless he give them N200,000:00. I called and started begging them. They said they will not release my boy except they see alert. I later sent 30k to the account sent to me via fone.

The same story of not having drawing or plan for the building. God will help us.

That has always been the problem with a public website such as this. While it is an opportunity to grow your business and access even more clients you also need to be aware that fraudsters would also use it.

usually I tend to advice my workers travel with a lagos based contractor or someone who lives in lagos but has a project elsewhere like those building in the village.

Most of their stories is not good when they travel out of state for a job they do not tend to get paid fully or at all. Some have to borrow money to come back home. Only few success stories.

May God bless the work of your hands.

But why are you guys not reporting all this incidents before Dominion started this thread. I mean since about a year ago...
Your past experiences could have helped other people too... "When you see something, say something".
Let's not think about Owerri or Eastern part alone, this could happen anywhere, even in your backyard that you knew so well. Beware.
