About Certificate Programs and Degree Programs

Both certificate and degree programs are designed to teach you about a specific subject; accounting, fashion, business and technology are just a few options. The education you'll receive in each type of program can prepare you to enter a career field or give you a competitive advantage in your current career. There are differences between the two, however; certificate programs tend to be shorter, cost less and cover a more specific range of subject matter.

Differences in Length

In general, a certificate program will take you less time to complete because you won't have to meet general education requirements in addition to subject-area requirements.

Differences in Uses

You might enter a certificate program if you'd like to learn additional skills to change careers or update skills in your field. Certificate programs are very narrow in scope, focusing on a specific subject, like paralegal skills or business management. While degree programs also allow you to add to your current skill set, you'd be given a broader education, one that could prepare you for several careers instead of one specific position. Certificate programs are sometimes used by professionals to keep their licenses or certifications up to date as well.

Differences in Cost

Because you'll have to complete a smaller number of courses to earn a certificate, you probably won't pay as much tuition.

How to Choose

You might consider two things when you're trying to choose between a certificate program and a degree program: time and money. If you'd like to get started in a new career or receive a promotion quickly, then you may want to enroll in a certificate program. However, if you don't mind taking the extra time to earn a degree, you might find it more profitable in the long run. Before choosing a certificate over a degree program, you may want to research the most common education requirements for the job that you're hoping to get to ensure a certificate helps you compete in the job market.

In most cases those who hold degrees, particularly those with at least a bachelor's degree, generally earn more than those who have certificates.

The educated Nigerians are as bad as the dullard ruling over them as the president. They are just bookworms with nothing to show for them. Nonsense! A farmer in USA can device a working machine and a PhD holder in engineering in Nigeria cannot make a wheel. What a bunch of wasted educated people! Smh...!

I have stopped respecting well educated Nigerians for failing to do something about the bad conditions of the nation and take their rightful positions to make a change. Ptui!

It depends on the field you are, For I.T professionals i would say getting Certifications are just the Bomb, for those in the commercial section i would say getting an MBA and not just MSc should be the Bomb!
Nowadays MSc is just like a normal BSc, Most companies want to know if you are really certified in your field

Hi, sum1 wit a science background (bch) wanting to do a masters in MBA, What do you make of dat In terms versatility and Wat are the likely consequences. With high regards with the trend in our labour market today. Thanks

Get a master's degree first.

Bachelors are a dime a dozen nowadays and masters are more coveted. Let me explain

1. Army, Police, Civil Defence etc will place you a rank higher than your peers with a bachelors degree

2. Large corporations reduce the years of experience required for entry if you have a masters

3. Other rule oriented organizations increase the max age for applicants with a masters

PLUS: You can always get certifications even whilst working while you can not do same with a masters.

it all depends on your profession.
if you are a pharmacist for instance, you may need masters later. I dont know what professional certification you may need.
but if you are an accountant you may need ICAN and other professional certification before talking about masters except you are in academia.
i hope it helps

Have a Master's Degree and back it up with Professional Certifications.

Re: Having Masters Vs Having Professional Certifications by ab3458(m): 5:58am On Jul 27, 2015
Bros the candid truth is that, they are both very important. If you seeking for a civil service job with an msc you will be giving level nine and if you like have all the professional certificates in the world you will start from level 8 without msc. But I would advise you to opt in for both if you have the means. It still depends on your profession

in most cases the two go in handy, but its preferably better to get your masters coz that takes time and much effort, the professional ones will walk up to you themselves

It all depend on which career path you wish to tread. Academic or professional? If academic, pls go for ur Msc, afterwards, PhD. But if professional path, pls go for ur professional courses but that doesn't preclude the fact that you would still need your masters when you attain a certain level on the rung. As for me, I prefer being in the class.

Nice comment...anyway you want a PhD like Dr. Jonathan undecided

Nigerians enroll for master or professional programme for several reasons among which are : to gain employment, promotion, pride, knowledge, to reverse under employment, added qualification etc. I am doing my masters (Msc) because am seeking employment (either as a lecturer in higher institution or as an administrator in a corporate firm). Considering my age and all I think becoming a lecturer won't be bad. I have an interest in teaching.

Lecturing as a career as a career path is a very good choice.....hoping to gain admission to start ma Msc afta ma NYSC dis oct

A master's and more certifications would get you more chances of getting a job. Masters first, followed by several certifications.

If you want know how and experience Professional certification is the way.
If you just want theoretical knowledge and want to answer bogus titles then masters or phd is goo.

But know getting a masters or phd for job hunt is not good for a fresh graduate, your first degree can get you the drem job.

If you look well the reason why many go for 2nd and 3rd degrees is becos of unemployment, the extra studies is just an organized form of distraction and control.

Why do you want to get an MBA?
Why Not an MSc?
Or an MASc?
Or MPhil?

Major decisions like the choice of Master's or Where to raise a family etc. might seem trivial but they *can determine the rest of your life. Look at your options very well

what do you want to use the masters for? (Better Pay, Landing that dream job i.e. in Shell --> That makes it clearer as to the master's program you should choose) Do your research, loads of research. And more importantly be very happy with the choice you make and own it like you invented and any company will be lucky to hire you. If you don't end up being the one to hire others grin
