Education / No Plan To Hike Tuition Fees In Universities- Ministry by 247frolic(m): 3:31pm On Oct 03, 2018
The Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday debunked the news trending on social media that the Federal Government had approved the hike in tuition fees of Nigerian universities to N350,000.

Mr Sonny Echono, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry made the clarification at a symposium in Abuja.

Echono, who said the Federal Government was not planning to increase the tuition fees, urged Nigerians to remain calm on the issue.

The symposium has its theme: “The Right to Education means the Right to a Qualified Teacher’’.

“The Federal Government did not and has no intention of introducing new tuition fees in our public universities not to mention the figure to N350, 000.

“What is true is that the present administration is committed to guarantee quality of education.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the ministry of education along with the ministry of finance to jointly organise a workshop that will inform on a very sustainable and workable recommendation of funding education in Nigeria.

“And to this end, we have been engaging various stakeholders including ASUU who can come up with a very useful contribution that will bring all these recommendations achievable.

Echono added that the ministry was working toward re-establishing the education bank to address the role of education funding as the government cannot do it alone.

He said the role of the education bank would be to give loan at a low interest rate, saying this would not be limited to students alone but also parents.

On the right to education, Echono said every child has the fundamental right to quality education, adding that the ministry had developed strategies to ensure pupils and students with special needs were carried along.

Echono said that the National Teachers Institute (NTI) had also concluded plans to train and develop the capacity of primary and secondary school teachers in the 36 states and FCT.

He said that the right to education was sine qua non to national development, saying the Ministerial Strategic Plan (2016 to 2019) had been designed to guarantee expanded access to all levels of education.

Echono said that the plan was geared toward providing adequately the necessary infrastructure and facilities to ensure that the right to the basic level and standards were maintained.

He, therefore, called on teachers to upgrade themselves as effective from January 2020, any teacher who did not present the prerequisite qualifications would be pushed out of the system.

Echono urged the teachers to take advantage of the professional examinations made available in 35 states and online resource materials to guide them as a teacher.

He, however, called on states governments owing teachers’ salaries to take a step in ensuring that teachers were paid as when due and as well motivate teachers adequately for optimal performance.

Earlier, Mrs Justina Ibe, the Director, Education Support Service of the ministry, said the Federal Government had not relented in its efforts to ensure that the teaching profession was provided with qualified personnel.

Ibe said that this informed the Ministerial Strategic Plan which were now being implemented gradually with positive results.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the symposium was part of activities to commemorate the World Teachers Day to hold on Oct. 5, to celebrate the contributions of teachers to nation building.

Politics / PHOTOS: Indimi Foundation Completes 100 Homes For Bama Idps by 247frolic(m): 2:54pm On Oct 03, 2018
Governor Kashim Shettima has commissioned the Muhammadu Indimi Village for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Bama, and also flagged off a second phase of the resettlement initiative in Gamboru-Ngala by the Muhammadu Indimi Foundation.

The event took place earlier today, a day after Nigeria’s 58th Independence anniversary, and marks the commencement of a long-awaited exodus of more IDPs from camps to new homes in Bama.

The #MuhammaduIndimiVillage is a complete community with 100 solar-powered 3-room homes, clinic, school, community centre and marketplace. 100 previously displaced families from Bama have been selected as beneficiaries. At least 600 children, women and men are expected to benefit from the first phase of the resettlement initiative in Bama.

This is the second phase of the housing projects by the Foundation where hundreds of families are expected to find refuge.

Governor Kashim Shettima who was visibly happy with the gesture of the Borno born billionaire, said that the gesture of the foundation to construct 100 homes worth hundreds millions of Naira was a huge intervention designed to alleviate the suffering of the displaced persons in the state.

“On behalf of the people and the Government of Borno state, I humbly wish to accept and thank you for the life changing interventions towards improving the living standard of the people of the State.

Shettima further stated that in 2014, Indimi had donated $5m for a social and reintegration program of the Federal Government.

"His contribution and that of other stakeholders including the Government was used to fund the Victims Support Fund (VSF), made to do key livelihood and life saving interventions in communities ravaged by Boko Haram." he said.

During the handing over the Muhammadu Indimi Village to the Emir of Bama on behalf of the Bama people, the Borno State Governor said Dr. Indimi was a prominent philanthropist among well-meaning Nigerians.

“Donating a community for the rehabilitation of 100 IDPs, fully equipped with clinic, school, shops and many more, is not a little achievement. It only goes to prove the purity of his intentions, depth of his selflessness, strength of his character and compassion for fellow citizens of Borno. What is particularly interesting is that Dr. Indimi founded one of the first indigenous oil and gas companies in Nigeria, Oriental Energy Resources Limited.
He is a job creator and spreads wealth for the stability of our nation. We are mightily proud of him, the critical interventions he has made and his lifetime commitment to the social welfare of our people,” Governor Shettima said.

One of the beneficiaries, Mohammed Mustapha who has a family of 17 and had been in Dalori camp in Maiduguri for more than 4 years, described the impact of moving to a new home. “We had forgotten what it is like to have a home again, the good life. You’ve wiped our tears. I will never forget this,” he said.

Founder of the Foundation, Alhaji (Dr) Muhammadu Indimi, OFR revealed that the Borno Elders’ Forum had worked very closely with the Foundation to identify the one hundred families.

“People in North-East Nigeria have been through difficult times. We sympathize greatly with them. Our goal is to create and support initiatives with long-term impact. It is no small responsibility, but we will remain committed to finding sustainable, life-changing solutions for our people.
The Indimi Foundation believes that our men, women and children need all the help they can get to rebuild their lives,” Dr Indimi said.

To support more families, the Muhammadu Indimi Foundation will commence construction of one hundred houses for the resettlement of families in Gamboru-Ngala.

The resettlement initiative is one the Foundation’s livelihood programmes which have included a donation of two billion naira to support victims of terrorism in the North East, two hundred million naira to rehabilitate IDPs in Yola, full scholarships to more than 2000 students, donation of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, financial aid as well as distribution of food and cash to at least forty thousand persons in Maiduguri camps.

Since 2013, the Muhammadu Indimi Foundation joined local and international humanitarian organisations to work on rehabilitation initiatives for millions of victims of insurgency who were uprooted from their homes in North-East Nigeria.

Politics / Osun: PDP Rejects INEC Declaration Of Osun Guber As Inconclusive by 247frolic(m): 6:31pm On Sep 23, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejects in its entirety, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) declaration of the September 22, 2018 Osun State Governorship election as inconclusive.

The PDP insists that the process was conclusive and that its candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, who won a total of 254, 698 votes, is in clear lead and should be immediately declared winner by INEC, having met the requirements of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Section 179 (2) (a)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, (as amended), is clear and very unambiguous in spelling out the conditions for returning a candidate to the office of governor of a state.

This section states inter-alia, “A candidate for an election to the office of Governor of a State shall be deemed to have been duly elected where, there being two or more candidates - (a) he has the highest number of votes cast at the election; and (b) he has not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of all the local government areas in the State.

The declaration of the election as inconclusive, by INEC is therefore a sordid robbery of the franchise of the people of Osun State, who participated in the election.

It is obvious that having failed in their schemes to alter the final results due to the resistance of the people, the APC had to bear pressure on INEC to declare the election inconclusive so as to pave way for the perfection of their manipulative schemes, which the people of Osun state have firmly resisted so far.

Instead of yielding to the evil machination of the APC, INEC should have summoned the patriotic courage to immune itself and end this needless controversy by returning the PDP and declare our candidate as the winner.

It is instructive to state that the PDP will no longer accept inconclusive elections as subterfuge by the APC attain its dubious electoral manipulative schemes in our nation.

The people of Osun state and the entire nation are already aware that the PDP won this election. They have the authentic figures from the polling units and know the candidate the voters prefer.

The people by their votes, have overwhelmingly declared for our candidate and we are not ready to accept any attempt by anybody to use any means whatsoever to steal our mandate freely given by the people.

The PDP is for peace, but we will not hesitate to use every force available in a democracy to face any attempt to subvert the will of the people or rig us out in this election.

The PDP therefore charges the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to avoid the fury of the people by immediately reversing this fraudulent decision of the Resident Electoral Commissioner and declaring our candidate the winner of the election. Anything short of this is definitely not acceptable to the PDP and the people of Osun and it is a direct recipe for crisis.

Finally, the PDP cautions INEC and the APC to note that the game is up. The people of Osun state have decided in favour of the PDP and that has become a fact that can never be altered.

Signed:

Kola Ologbondiyan
National Publicity Secretary

Politics / 2019: Ribadu Seeks To Dislodge Gov. Bindow In Adamawa by 247frolic(m): 9:14pm On Sep 22, 2018
Former EFCC boss, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has formally declared his intention to challenge incumbent Governor Muhamadu Bindow for the 2019 Adamawa governorship ticket under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing party official at the state secretariat on Saturday in Yola, Ribadu said Gov. Bindow has performed below expectation, as such the APC needs a new face to make a difference.

“Give me the chance and opportunity to make the difference.

“Our dear state is facing a number of developmental challenges that require urgent, holistic and strategic handling.

“We do not need cosmetics, which do not address fundamental issues that are cornerstone to our development as a people.

” It takes visionary leadership with capacity and modern thinking to provide that needed redirection, beyond deceptive makeup.

“It is this much-needed leadership that I promise to offer to our people.

“I come with genuine intention and I have a burning passion to change the fortunes of our people for good.

“With all sense of humility, I believe I possess the requisite credentials, both academic and character, required to move this state forward.

“I will run an all-inclusive government where all stakeholders like you truly have stakes,” Ribadu said.

He urged party officials to ensure level playing ground for all aspirants.

“As we move into the primaries, what we require from you, our party leaders, is utmost level of responsibility by allowing free and fair contest.

” We cannot afford to manipulate our party into failure. Injustice can never stand. Even if it does, it would be on shaky foundations which can collapse at any time.

“Therefore, skewing a process like the primaries to favour one person, even though unpopular, may only lead our great party to failure, something no genuine party member would desire.”

Responding, the Adamawa APC chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, lauded Ribadu for his commitment to the party and assured him and other aspirants of level playing field.

“I want to assure you of free and fair primaries and the commitment of the party executives to fully support any candidate that emerge,” Bilal said.

Apart from Ribadu and Bindow, another aspirant, Dr Halilu Ahmed is also seeking the party’s endorsement to fly its flag for the governorship race.

Politics / PDP Condemns INEC For Banning Smartphones, Cameras At Polling Booths by 247frolic(m): 4:39pm On Sep 19, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to ban the use of smartphones at polling booths.

The National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, described the development as puzzling, adding that it was aimed at preventing the global community from knowing the process of the elections.

He made the comments on Tuesday, during a meeting in Bayelsa with stakeholders from the Bayelsa East senatorial district.

INEC on Monday banned the use of mobile phones, cameras or any recording devices by voters in polling booths during the Osun State governorship election.

The INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said the ban will help reduce the risk of vote buying and selling which he described as a norm amongst politicians.

He further explained that voters will not be prevented from using their devices at the polling booths but would be banned from holding their cameras and telephones, once the ballot papers are issued and until they cast their votes in the ballot boxes.

Politics / APC Members In Ikeja Protest Reelection Bid Of Rep James Faleke by 247frolic(m): 10:21am On Sep 18, 2018
Some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikeja Federal Constituency, Lagos State, on Monday staged a peaceful protest against the re-election of Rep. James Faleke.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Faleke, member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives is positioning himself for re-election in 2019 elections.

The federal lawmaker had on 2016 gone to contest the deputy governorship seat in Kogi, his state of origin.

The protesters, who chanted different solidarity songs against Faleke, a two-term member of the House of Representatives, said that the he had not represented the constituency well.

They carried placards with inscriptions such as “Faleke, go back to Kogi, Ikeja say no to you”, “90 Shops in Kogi, Go back to your Kogi”.

Others read: “16 years of representing Ikeja with no constituency benefit”, “Dear Tinubu, the People of Ikeja, Ojodu, and Onigbongbo say no to Faleke” among others.

One of the leaders of the protesters, Mr Solomon Johnson, said that there were some many capable and vibrant youths, men and women that could represent the constituency.

Johnson, a leader in Ikeja APC said that the protest was to tell the leadership of the party that the residents would not support the re-election of Faleke to the House of Representatives.

“He has been in power in the last 18 years and we felt he has done enough,” Johnson said.

According to him, since the lawmaker has gone to contest Kogi Deputy Governorship Election in 2016, the legislative seat should be given to another individual in person of Mrs Toke Benson.
READ ALSO Tonye Cole Resigns from Sahara Group, Goes into Active Politics

He urged Faleke to concentrate on strengthening APC in Kogi rather than seek re-election by transferring his voter register back to Lagos.

“It will be a slap on on the people of Ikeja Federal Constituency if Faleke is forced on residents, we have able youths that can represent the constituency and we have found Mrs Toke Benson.

“Since the party is interested in promoting women participation, Toke Benson is qualified, she is a lawyer and well known. Enough of impunity. Give us Toke Benson and we will deliver Ikeja for APC,” Johnson said.

Another leader of the protesters, Mr Hope James said, “The entire people of Ikeja want a change. The attention of Faleke has been in Kogi. Our people have not been benefiting from that office.”

James, one of the APC stalwarts from Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), alleged that the lawmaker had not been representing the constituency well.
READ ALSO Police arraign 28 for allegedly setting Iwo police station ablaze

The party loyalist alleged that the National Leader of APC, Sen. Bola Tinubu had told the lawmaker to remain in Kogi, saying that Faleke should give chance to another person.

Also, Mrs Priscilla Odoh, a former auditor of APC in the LCDA, who noted that the representative had been in office for 18 good years, said that there was a need to allow other people to grow.

According to her, the representative has not been carrying people along but only work with a few set of people.

Odoh said that she would support the ambition of Mrs Toke Benson, an aspirant for the seat because Benson has listening ears and would carry everyone along.

Politics / Dickson Tells Buhari: Take Action Against Sylva, Lokpobiri In Bayelsa by 247frolic(m): 4:31pm On Sep 14, 2018
Bayelsa State Governor, Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of allowing a former governor of the state, Timipre Sylva, and the Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, to undermine the security of his state.

He also expressed shock that the President has failed to take any action against the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and their cohorts who cause mayhem in the state despite making several reports and complaints to him and the security agencies.

Governor Dickson in a rare press release by his Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, said: “The president has allowed common criminals and terrorists such as Sylva and Lokpobiri to unleash violence on their people while the Inspector General of Police is sitting in Abuja to direct investigation of a petition against the Brass Council chairman. At the moment, they are attacking innocent people in Brass, who are members of the PDP, with people bloodied and houses burnt all in a bid to destabilise the state.”

The governor accused the APC leaders in the state, including Sylva and Lokpobiri, of using the security agencies to shield criminals, intimidate and harass innocent citizens.

He also pointedly accused the legislator representing the Brass Constituency 1 in the state House of Assembly, Israel Sunny-Goli, of being responsible for the mayhem in Brass and that he was being shielded by Sylva and Lokpobiri in cahoots with security agencies.

He called for his arrest and prosecution for various crimes, including murder, thuggery and cultism in his constituency and the whole of Brass Local Government Area.

Governor Dickson said if Sunny-Goli is not arrested and prosecuted by the law enforcement agencies, he would personally mobilise the people of the state to arrest him.

He stressed that the police authorities and the Department of State Services (DSS) had failed to arrest the lawmaker despite the plethora of petitions against him in the state because he belonged to the APC.

According to him, Sunny-Goli was one of the kingpins of cultism in the state responsible for several unresolved murders.

“Sunny-Goli is a criminal and a fugitive, who is running away from the law. He is responsible for several deaths in the state and runs to Abuja to seek refuge. The police authorities cannot continue to condone acts of criminality simply because Sunny-Goli (also known as Adi) is a member of the APC. The law must not be applied selectively.

“The position of the Bayelsa State Government is that Sunny-Goli has to be arrested. We are asking the IG and the DSS to take steps to prevent an abuse of their powers by someone who terrorises innocent people.

“I will mobilise the people of this state to arrest him since the law enforcement agencies cannot do it. As governor of this state, I do not and will not condone criminal acts by any individual no matter his position in the state. I have a zero tolerance for criminality and lawlessness.”

The Bayelsa helmsman said Sunny-Goli has several pending cases before the police and the DSS for which he was invited but that he shunned the invitation to seek protection in Abuja from where he wrote a frivolous petition that resulted in Thursday’s invasion of the homes of the interim chairman of the Brass council, Victor Isaiah, and that of the former chairman of the APC in the state, Chief Timipa Tiwei Orunimighe, who recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He insisted that Isaiah who was invited by the police would honour the invitation when the security agencies act on the earlier petitions against the lawmaker that was being protected by the agencies.
