SENATE President, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday, said the Senate, under his leadership, will not delay screening of ministerial nominees once the list is received by the lawmakers.

Saraki, who stated this while receiving the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Denys Gaver, in his office, said the legislature was prepared to work on the list immediately it was sent.

He stated that the ongoing recess embarked upon by the Senate was only a suspension of plenary, adding that the recess would not in anyway disturb serious government business, including screening of ministerial nominees and any other urgent matters that may crop up.

The Senate president stated that though the Senate is currently on break, “we are working and we are ready to reconvene any time to attend to any national assignment, including the confirmation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees.”

He stated that the National Assembly would cooperate with the executive arm of government in accomplishing its set objectives.

According to him, the Senate would ensure that bills from the executive arm of government were treated with dispatch, as a sign of its determination to create an enabling environment for the success of the president.

He added that the Senate had already kickstarted its change agenda by setting up 18-man committee to produce a realistic and progressive legislative agenda which, according to him, would cover poverty alleviation, law enforcement, national security, commercial disputes, eradication of corruption and investments in the petroleum sector.

The Senate president also said the National Assembly would partner with the French national parliament in the area of capacity building, in order to strengthen bilateral relationship between the two countries and enhance investment flow into Nigeria.

He also solicited the cooperation of the French government in tackling the security problems in the north-eastern part of Nigeria.

The French ambassador, in his remarks, solicited the cooperation of the National Assembly and President Muhammadu Buhari-led executive.

He said the expectation of the international community from Nigeria was high, adding that the global community expected cooperation between the private sector in Nigeria and its France counterpart.

Gaver said that French was encouraging its former colonies, who are neighbours with Nigeria, to cooperate with the country in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents.
