Hello all.
I was having a conversation with a friend who recently gave birth, and she was narrating her ordeal during antenatal classes recently.
the nurses there told the mothers present that they would not be attended to, until they had contributed money for 'malt'. The mother's started protesting; the nurses abandoned them. After waiting a while, they decided to contribute money.
the most appalling part was, the nurses said that they wouldn't take less than #100.
mothers who didn't have were sent home; meaning no vaccines for their children that day.
This happened at Badagry general hospital.
I'm surprised because my mum has been a nurse for 25 years (although a psychiatrist), even she was annoyed when she heard it.
Do nurses take bribe too, or is this peculiar?

It happens most times in general hospitals.

This happened when I was going for my ante natal care, we were being attended to according to the numbers we write our names.

But after calling numbers 1 to 5, they will start attending to numberless people. if you try to complain, they'll show you their area of specialization (nagging and insult).

They attend to people like pooo but those that greased their palms were being treated like Queens

Corruption is clearly delving and creeping deep into every facets of Nigerian sector, not surprised that this is happening in a government health establishment. If not curtailed immediately it will become the status quo with people defending it as the norm.

Corruption is gradually being ingrained into the fibres of all Nigerians one way or the other ~~~~health assistance, job interviews some exchange has to be made even religious institutions are not left out.

Coming to my beloved profession, ~~~~what more can I say,? I am not going to hold brief for erring colleagues caught in the act but we all are product of our society. Cos the society played the sickening role that has crept in with sole intention of damaging my profession's already bruised image.

Taking bribes doesn't have to do with the profession. The greatest problem facing Nigeria is corruption. It's everywhere even in the home. I know of some primary healthcare centres where soap, detergents are taken from women who register for ante-natal, the govt doesn't supply these, they barely even supply drugs and needed materials, I'm sure the nurses aren't expected to use their salaries in buying these things.I don't know what the money they are collecting is for anyway, the people involved are in the best position to answer that.

This is insane. Inst there a board to report these monsters? Everyone in that hospitals division should be fired. Such acts not only shame profession but harm public.
