Do you have jerseys for Nigerian clubs like Shootings, Rangers, Dolphins, Pillars

If not, then you are like the Walmart you criticised rightly on neo-colonialism.

And we were like every other middle class family around .

1 Walmart will create jobs for local youth
2 pay more taxes
3 source products directly from manufacturer and cutting out the numerous middlemen
4 cheaper .
5Raise the profile of the southwest
6 farmers will benefit from direct relationships
7 Hopefully stop all those rural / urban migration of unskilled people and farmers .

If Buhari gets it right and the economy kicks into gear , then 4x 4 are sitting ducks .
Not so enthusiastic as you maybe because I know they won't be here if they were doing so well back in the US. So they had to go looking for "New Frontier". Let's see how it goes sha; but I know small businesses will fold up in thousands.

How?
Explains better pls.
Thousands of small business owners have seen their dreams of being successful entrepreneurs destroyed by the opening of Wal-Mart in their area. Small businesses are not afforded the same discounts by wholesale providers as those given to major corporations because the smaller business cannot buy the massive quantities that companies like Wal-Mart can. Therefore, they must charge higher prices for the same product thus losing patronage.

Walmarts quest for low cost and price is making the company to pay least wages to its workers.infact majority of Walmarts staffs are dependent on government welfare because their wages cannot sustain them, what this implies is that the government is indirectly granting subsidies to walmart even though the company is not owned by the government.
It has team of tax consultants that exploit loopholes in the tax system to make the company pay low taxes.

Walmart is predatory. It gobbles mom and pop shops and run competitors out of business by use of economics of scale in its purchases.the company determines prices that suppliers will receive on the products supplied.if a supplier refuses, walmart makes generic brands, this has bankrupted many walmart suppliers or made them earn very little profit from the company.

This is a welcome development Walmart is the largest emplooyer of labour in the world.

They're also one of the most abusive organizations.

Their employees in America are advised (by the company) to apply for food-stamps because they do not want to pay them a liveable wage.

They cheat their suppliers so that smaller farmers struggle to stay in business.

I don't want these crooks in Nigeria.

Well,my suggestion will be for the Lagos government to allocate land in the outskirts, very far from the city, maybe after Ajah/Epe or so(moreover it's only such areas you can still find such massive expanse of land to conveniently accommodate them in Lagos)that way by the time lagosians consider travel cost, travel time and huge inconvenience to the walmart, they'll find their local stores actually cheaper and rather continue 'jeje' with them.

The Chinese produces the goods and wholesale them here these days because our immigration department gives every chinese, lebanese and indian a free pass. . Then walmart retails . . All are foreigners. Meanwhile, our politicians claiming to be working hard to create jobs for the people sit aside and clap. The retail sector is most probably the biggest employer of labour in Nigeria yet there they are, applauding. When we decimate the economic circumstances of hard working Nigerian traders through some of these bizare policies, maybe because we feel disconnected from 'those' that we, in our petty thinking, presume to be the biggest beneficiaries of the retail trade in Nigeria, we will only see more sophisticated criminal acts in this country. Why? Nobody will sit at home and die. If the government can't protect her citizens legitiimate sources of income, obviously, the citizen would be left with no other option than to 'survive at all costs'.

Walmart is a cut-throat capitalism and it's harmful to any city that it goes into.people may get low prices of goods, but when you calculate the total cost of having walmart in your city or state you'd find that it's harmful.Lagos state shouldn't allow this predatory juggernaut into Lagos state.it will kill local businesses.

How is Walmart harmful? What is the cost of having them in our city? Don't we need more companies to provide jobs?

Wrong! Go and ask the same Walmart if they were allowed in South Africa a couple of years ago (2012). The SA government didn't want them because they were going to be competition for there local brands (Shoprite, Game, Clicks etc.). These are the same brands that the SA chamber of commerce is using to make in-roads throughout west and central africa as export channels for their locally manufactured products. The summary is that Walmart was finally bullied into investing in a local SA brand chain.

Now look at the dumb Nigerian government, the same shoprite came and is infiltrating every nook and cranny with their imports and nobody in government is any wiser. If they want walmart in the country, they should make them invest/partner in/with a local brand instead.

Wise administrations do NOT allow big brands to come into their countries and take away their revenue. Walmart is operating in the UK but as ASDA - a localised brand. Which means all the revenue stays in the UK. That is wisdom, not exhibiting lower class ignorance while thinking - we are bringing foreign investment - that's nonsense at best.

The Nigerian government should wake up and stop this inferiority complex and playing into the hand of big business indirect neo-colonisation!!!!! My two kobo!!

Take a quick guess why New York City with almost 10 million people doesn't have a single Walmart.

Walmart is world brand that is seen in developed countries with purchasing power, its a privilege to have them here, one of the indicators of development, even in China that mostly abhors foreign packaged stuffs, has numerous superstores in China, like French carrefour, lotus,Walmart competing with their local stores that don't have full foreign items like fresh Titus fish sold in carrefour can't be seen in chinese market or departmental stores, also Lipton and sardines and other stuffs, same things is applicable to Walmart in Nigeria, u get stuffs in Europewalmarts in Nigeriawalmarts that u can't see elsewhere.

You can't see where you got it wrong there? You are comparing Nigeria (a developing/emerging economy) to China (an established economy). China shut their doors to foreigners TILL their locals were ready to compete with them; and then allowed them in AFTERWARDS. Nigeria is putting the cart before the horse.

I'm well aware of the benefits but you have to agree that Nigerians business and entrepreneurs need more attention.

I'm looking forward to the day when it will be a priviledge for a Nigerian company to open business in foreign shores

Who is guilty of 'tribalism' here?

Are you denying that there is a problem in Nigeria? Or have you forgotten the silly protest in Lagos earlier this year? The stupid comments from the royal idiot? Or the everyday comments that you hear in passing about Igbos?

The fact is there are people engaged in commerce in Nigeria, in a big way, doing so honestly but many would prefer to overlook their hard work - why is that?

That is your main point. Its a good point. So don't spoil it all by saying :"especially as many are Igbo owned". That would make your otherwise good comment tribalistic and untrue.

THANK YOU.

Wal-Mart and major companies like them kill small and medium. scale business. And they are going to set it up in a way that their revenue will head back home to the US. So, not much money for LASG and definite killing of jobs for Nigerians. We are celebrating this why?

Cheap prices at an exorbitant costs for other business owners and their pay for workers is so lousy and they will take advantage of every tax loophole. Shoprite already exploits andnimports everything from SA. Nigerian governments should shut down foreign investment UNTIL we can compete with them or force foreign investors to sign deals that favour Nigerians in the long run (transfer of assets after a certain number of years, create a local entity, purchase 70% of goods from local suppliers), I don't know any country that was developed by foreign investment when their economy was bad (China, Japan after WWII etc).

Who are the economic advisors to our govts please?? Why can't they get policies right??
