By Maiwada Dammalam The best thing to happen to Nigeria since the 1914 amalgamation of the two protectorates to give birth to Nigeria is, no doubt the APC and President Buhari. You may not accept this simple truth in public but, deep in the inner recess of the privacy of your mind, you may be wondering why President Buhari is such a horrific nightmare to cheats where he is a dream come true to the down trodden. Few weeks ago, who could imagine our emergency dollar billionaires could suddenly lose their voracious appetite for their Jets and Yachts and cringe at the thought of an impending inquiry into their dirty pasts. Who could deny this thieving class of Nigerians are now in an earthly "grave" situation facing the earthly consequences of their misdeeds? Each time one them cowardly broke down in what could best be described "belated regret", I couldn't help but nurse nostalgic memories of a young "Major General Muhammadu Buhari" and the vacuum created by his unceremonial exit from power and the cost of the wasted opportunities his exit caused Nigeria. Had he lasted just as long as the successive partying regimes of IBB and Abacha, certainly Nigerians wouldn't be the economic boosters of UAE or even Ghana they are today. Certainly we wouldn't be operating at the sub-human level we are operating today. This cost could easily be calculated by the myriad of "lacks" holding Nigeria to ransom - lacks that hitherto, we used to take for granted but now have to travel halfway across the globe in search of. My sudden recollection of these memories was evoked by a call made by House of Representatives for President Buhari to reopen the murder investigations of late Chief Bola Ige and Dele Giwa in addition to millions of petitions to him to solve the riddles of many MDAs that seem to hold the key to jump-starting Nigeria as a nation. All of sudden, confidence, a basic component in nation building, as well, an important link in relations between government and the people has been restored into the Nigerian system or, so it seem at least, going by exhibition of confidence in the ability of the new President Buhari led APC regime to redress past injustices that many Nigerians believe were buried and forgotten. Literally, many people believe President Buhari came with a magic wand that could solve Nigeria's problems even without them raising a finger to play their role. That's the kind of confidence he exudes. Like him or not, President Buhari simply make things happen sometimes, effortlessly. Corruption dropped by a significant percentage immediately after he was declared winner of the last Presidential elections. Perhaps, the clearest evidence of President Buhari's efficacy as an antidote and conclusive therapy for corruption so far, was a sudden outbreak of an elite kind of ailment yet to be diagnosed. Just few weeks into his regime all the powerful and arrogantly flamboyant "untouchables" in the expired GEJ regime had either been scratched or touched while many others sensed the inevitability of their fate and are now in a desperate race for cover. Going by the rate the new ailment is wrecking havoc among the immediate past class of bourgeoisie and unanimous public consensus linking the phenomenon with Buhari's ascension to power, one could easily mistook the amiable retired General for a doctor not a President. Interestingly, while many people still play the silly ostrich by trying to identify the source of Nigeria's major impediment to socio-economic well being, it's my opinion that corruption in Nigeria is largely attributable to our seemingly genetic affiliation to it. Our passive and active involvement with corruption is the support base on which the thriving multi billion dollar industry is creating waves globally. Only in Nigeria could a single individual steal $6,000,000,000 and feign sickness to escape prosecution after an earlier made offer of $250m by the same criminal to legitimise the heist refused to fly. The case of former Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Diezeni Alison Madueke is one history that will forever remain a reference point to unborn generations of Nigerians. Arrogant as she's flamboyant, Madueke single handedly held Nigeria to ransom and practically divided it along its dangerous fault lines just create an enabling environment for her agenda of corruption. The deafening silence of Diezeni's folks to condemn the heist, as well condemn her feeble effort to buy from Nigeria what was so far discovered she stole, put at a whopping $6bn, at a "discounted" price of a meagre $250m said everything there is to say about our careless attitude to corruption and the insulting perception Diezeni have of our collective intelligence. If that didn't, perhaps, Alison Madueke's "fathers" that came out calling for reprieve for their "daughter" on the account of her "emergency" illness will. One may be forced to ask, where were these concerned "fathers" when their daughter was stealing every cent generated from the sale of Nigeria's oil in the last 5 years? Where were they when she was supervising truck loads of documents being removed from the NNPC towers few days to Presidential elections when it dawned on her GEJ was going to lose as I reported in real-time on this wall? How convenient a "sickness". Of course, she should be sick. What else should one expect from a "goat" that ate too much yams and mistook crude oil for palm oil? It's their season and they will keep exposing Nigerians to the crude methods Nigeria was ruled with in the last 5 years. Few days ago it was Reuben Abati lamenting the sudden silence of his phone after a very busy 4 years of meritorious service as the phone of the spokesperson of the most disorganised President the world have ever seen. Today it's the "what-a-man-do-a-woman-can-do-better" "oily" queen of GEJ's cabinet. Probably tomorrow it's going to be the law breaker turn law maker, Princess Stella Oduah's turn to be "sick" and quarantined in a 5 Star London hospital. At the rate they are going, very soon Nigeria will run short of "sickness" for its ordinary citizens after these thieves must have cornered all the sickness known to mankind to evade President Buhari's version of the EFCC which, unlike what they were used to is not only barking but ready to bite after developing new set of sharp, improved teeth courtesy of a President Buhari's second coming. Talk about giving life back to the dead. |
