Hi

I’ll like to briefly outline various finishes you can apply on your walls. You may need ideas on how to revamp your space to make them look gorgeous or simply bored of what you already have installed and desire to see it look different. Here are some useful info on different options to consider for your interior walls.

1. PAINTINGS and Decorative Wall Finishes- This is undoubtedly the commonest way of beautifying and protecting your walls. Walls could be painted in shades of a colour or in completely different colours. There are also various painting effects and decorative wall finishes that can be achieved using paints/plaster made specifically for such purposes such as Stucco, Istinto, Travertino, Ottocento/Velveto, Flex, Swahili, Crackle and so on. Glaze paints can also be used for wonderful creative effects that will give your space class. Decorative painting is wider than you can imagine. Out of the arrays of faux painting finishes, one would suit your taste, your class or your interior sense.

2. WALLPAPERS- Some people think wallpapers are still like they were some years ago, extremely fragile and fad. Gone are the days when wallpapers were made of ordinary papers. Wallpapers available nowadays are made of vinyl, fabrics and other tough materials which make their surfaces impervious, scrubbable and washable. There are innumerable designs to choose from to ornament and texture your walls.

3. WALLPAPER MURALS- These are scenic wallpapers. They are picturesque with landscape views, ocean views, garden views, sky views, city views, forest views, etc. Wallpaper murals are just too perfect for your living room and bedroom. Your space looks amazingly gorgeous if you have wallpaper mural installed.

4. 3D PANELS- 3D panels are made from shredded sugarcane stalks. It is a relatively new innovation in interior designing and decorating especially in this part of the world. If you require elegance that is second to none on your wall, this panel is simply the answer. It comes in different 3D designs (in white) which are paintable. So you have the option to choose the design that appeases you most.

5. FAUX PANELS- Made of high density polyurethane textured to look like stacked stones, bricks, wood, marbles etc. Faux panels are perfect for spaces like living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, toilets. They give a distinctive look to your walls and redefine your space especially when installed on appropriate surfaces which are not too extensive.

6. WOOD- Marine boards, medium density fibreboards and other forms of plywood and timber claddings are made by crushing and processing either hard or soft wood into boards. Having them installed on your walls will add aesthetics and warmth to your space.

7. MURALS (DRAWINGS)- Murals are artistic drawings and paintings on the wall.Wallpaper murals have made direct artistic drawing or painting on the wall less common. However, spaces such as children rooms, classrooms, sacred buildings etc may not become rid of wall murals soon. They are suitable for all spaces and more superb when it has limited impression on your wall. I have a simple mural on a wall in my living room which visitors always pass commendable remarks on.

8. ALLUMINIUM WALL CLADDING- Interior aluminium wall cladding is also gaining ground like its exterior counterpart. Aluminium claddings are produced in various forms and sizes and in bespoke finishes. They are more common in offices, hotels and public places. However, if you are building or turning your space to a high end home that would define luxury, you may need to opt for this cladding. You architect or interior designer can help with the specifications that would suit your interior.

9. PVC WALL CLADDINGS- Good for bathrooms, library, laundry etc. There are numerous colours and designs available and are very easy to remove and maintain.

10. CERAMIC TILES- Ceramic tiles are perfect for your bathrooms and laundry.

11. SILK PLASTER-

Choosing Wall Colors and Wall Paint Tips

Pull a color out of something else that is going to be in the room such as the chosen fabrics. Narrow down two or three and purchase a quart of each to paint sample boards (while no one wants to buy paint they won't use, this can keep you from buying gallons of the wrong color). Hold the dry sample boards up to the furniture, the fabrics and the surfaces already in the room (the larger swatch makes it so much easier to decide if a color is right or not).

If the choice between two colors is difficult, set one of the boards up and hide the other behind it. If you cannot commit, switch the boards as you will probably feel more comfortable with one. If not, don't worry too much about this as you'll eventually find the right color. Remember, it's just paint.

A perfect match isn't always the best wall color choice so allow at least one of the sample boards to be an imperfect match. It just might be the spark that gives your room that non-formulated designer look.

How to Combine Interior Colors Like an Expert

You don't need to be an expert to match interior colors like a pro. Here are a few steps to help you come up with color schemes that will give any room in your house a well thought-out look.

Step 1 - Set the Mood

The best place to start with interior design is not color or what you see, but rather what you want to feel. If you think about the ambiance or mood you want to convey with your interior design, it is easier to come up with the perfect color scheme. Is this room for relaxing with comfortable furniture and soft lighting? Is it a modern kitchen with strong lines and sharp angles? Is the room meant to be a blank canvas to display art or any other focal point?
Thinking about the function and vibe of a room can lead you to choose logical groups of colors. If you want your room to have a classic, sleek look, you can never go wrong with black and white. If watching a sunset is your idea of heaven and you want your room to have that same glow, go for different hues of warm colors such as reds, yellows and oranges. Maybe the beach is your preferred landscape--re-create it with light browns, beige, white and various shades of blue.

Step 2 - The 60-30-10 Rule

If you'd like to be more scientific about how you match interior color, use the 60-30-10 rule which tells you exactly how much of each color to use. Your main color should be used on 60 of the room, on the biggest canvasses such as walls. The second color in your color scheme should be used at 30 percent, on the next smallest parts of your interior design plan like rugs, furniture and even the ceiling. The last 10 percent of your room is reserved for the accent or accessory color used on small soft furnishings. Chrome, copper or another metal can be your 10 percent color, or you can use it on one accent wall. Use your color wheel to pick a family of colors and apply the 60-30-10 rule to hues in that group.

Step 3 - Natural Inspiration

Sometimes, following steps 1 and 2 is still not enough to help choose a color scheme for your room. If you're still unsure about picking colors, why not go for neutrals? Go outside and take inspiration from the great outdoors. Take your main color from slate, brick or limestone or choose another color inspired by sand, earth or bark. Easy accent colors to match with those earth tones are leaf green, sky blue or even the color of your favorite flower.

Step 4 - Historical Research

Looking into color schemes from other eras can give you some inspiration and fool-proof color combinations to follow. Every era from Victorian to 60's Modernist styles had unique color combinations used for furniture, home design and fashion. Look into some of these historic patterns and you may stumble upon the perfect color scheme for your room.

BENEFITS OF PAINTING YOUR HOME
Whether you are getting your house ready for the real estate market or are looking for an easy home improvement project, a new coat of exterior and/or interior paint can make a huge difference in your home’s atmosphere and overall curb appeal. Painting both the interior walls and the exterior of your home adds value to your investment, especially if you have the job professionally done. Here are some of the top benefits of painting your home.
1. Studies have shown that painting both interior and exterior walls and trim will increase the overall real estate value of your home. In addition, it enhances curb appeal, which makes the home much more attractive to potential buyers.
2. An exterior paint job will protect building materials and save you from expensive repairs down the road. In fact, a fresh coat of high-quality paint on an exterior surface can decrease the risk of weather related damaged that comes from exposure to harsh and inclement weather conditions. A quality paint job can also help protect the home against unwanted insect infestations.
3. A paint job is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look and feel of your home. In fact, a new paint job is known in the home improvement industry as the least expensive remodel out there. Depending on the color scheme you choose, you can create an entirely new feel within your interior space. While more neutral tones can be used to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, brighter hues will make the living space feel more vibrant and energetic.
4. Nothing makes a home look clean and new inside and out than a new paint job. When done properly, painting exterior and interior surfaces will cover up permanent marks and stains, and give the space a fresh new look. In addition, a white or light paint can help small rooms and spaces to visually appear bigger.
5. A paint job with low- or zero VOC paint can help promote the air quality in your home. When you use an eco-friendly paint, you keep pollutants out of the home (which is especially important if anyone in the home suffers from allergies or asthma). A quality paint job also keeps moisture away from wall materials, which prevents the growth of mold and mildew.
In order for a new coat of paint to effectively increase the value of your home, protect your home’s infrastructure, and transform the way your home looks and feels, it has to be done right. By hiring a painting contractor, you can rest assured that every detail will be attended to, from choosing high quality paint to putting the optimal number of coats on the surface to ensure a long lasting paint job.

How to Choose an Interior Paint Finish

Choosing a paint finish for interior walls depends on the desired amount of shine and durability. The most common interior paint finishes (paint sheen) are flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and high-gloss. Choosing the right paint finish for your interior project depends on the look, durability, and ambiance you want.

Flat finish: Available only in latex paint, a flat finish is opaque and sophisticated. It works great on interior walls and ceilings. As the least shiny finish available, it doesn't clean well and isn’t suited for kitchens, baths, or children’s bedrooms.

If you have kids, choose carefully. The only way to get rid of fingerprints and scribbles on a flat-finish wall is to paint over them.

Eggshell finish: An eggshell finish is often used for decorative finishes because it provides a low luster. It cleans up better than a flat finish, but probably not as well as you would want in a kitchen or bathroom.

Satin finish: The most popular paint sheen is a satin finish. It has more sheen than eggshell or satin and cleans better too. This finish is a good choice for woodwork, walls, doors, and hallways. It's also great for bedrooms and dining rooms.Satin is washable but it isn’t scrubbable, so you probably don't want to use it around your toddler's craft table.

Semi-gloss finish: A semi-gloss paint will give your room a subtle shine. It’s scrubbable and good for moldings, doors, windows, kitchens, and baths.

High-gloss finish: A high-gloss finish has a shiny, polished look. It’s also stain resistant and very scrubbable, which makes it a good choice for the areas of a home that get the most wear and tear, such as kitchens and baths. Food splatter or even crayon marks will clean up easily on a high-gloss finish.

When you’re deciding on which sheen you want to use, remember the higher the sheen, the darker and more intense the color will be. Also, high-gloss paint reflects light — and makes imperfections in your walls more noticeable. So before you apply this paint finish, take the time to prep your walls and make them extra smooth.

Although most paint finishes are available in either latex- or oil-based paints, you'll want to evaluate the pros and cons of latex- and oil-based paints to determine which is right for you.

SELECTING CEILING COLOR

Look up and take notice. Your ceiling is in need of some attention.

The ceiling represents one-sixth of the space in a room, but too often it gets nothing more than a coat of white paint. In fact, for decades, white has been considered not only the safest but also the best choice for ceilings.

There are times when it really is the perfect solution, but if you never consider anything beyond ordinary white, you may be missing an opportunity to add excitement and drama to a room.

Light vs. Dark Ceilings: As a general rule, ceilings that are lighter than the walls feel higher, while those that are darker feel lower. "Lower" need not mean claustrophobic: Visually lowered ceilings can evoke cozy intimacy.

Light Sources: As with wall colors, consider the source and strength of light the room receives during the time you're most often using it. Bright daylight bouncing off a blush pink or sky blue ceiling creates an airy feeling; candlelight and lamplight reflecting on tomato red produce a rich glow.

Paint Finish: Ceiling paint is usually flat, but an eggshell or satin finish paint offers just a hint of reflective sheen -- a benefit if you're using a darker color. Realize, however, that a ceiling must be in near-perfect condition since higher-sheen paints can call attention to surface flaws.

Color on the ceiling can enhance a room's character, but beware of excess: for primary living areas, keep the ceiling treatment simple so you don't grow tired of it.

White ceilings are often the best choice for a room. White overhead tends to disappear, so your attention focuses on the walls and furnishings.

A white ceiling also offsets intense wall color: boldly colored walls look crisp and sharp, and the ceiling feels higher. If the walls are pale and therefore space-expanding, a white ceiling opens the space even more.

In rooms that receive scant natural light, a white ceiling helps boost the perceived illumination by reflecting whatever light is available.

Like any other color element in the room, a white ceiling needs an echo, something to help integrate it into the scheme: Woodwork, carpet, draperies, and even bedding can serve the purpose. Otherwise the room will feel out of balance.

Which white is right? The basic ceiling white can look too stark and clinical, but paint companies offer a range of cool and warm whites, so select one with the warm or cool undertones you'd like to bring into your room.

Applying a contrasting color to the ceiling can dramatically alter your perception of the space. It's like a reflector bouncing light down into the room, and the quality of that light affects the room's character.

Disregard the rule that low ceilings require a light color. Apply a dark base to the ceiling and then use a glaze of the same color over it. The glaze softens the effect, and the sheen reflects enough light to keep the ceiling from overpowering the room.

Here are some terrific colors to consider for a ceiling:

-- Sky blue

-- Pale peach

-- Butter yellow

-- Blush pink

-- Warm tan

Immerse a Room

Applying the same hue to walls and ceiling wraps the room in a cloak of color. This approach isn't for everyone -- it can make the space feel smaller or more enclosed, because there's no "escape hatch" of lighter color at the top.

If the look appeals to you, however, you'll find that in a small room, seamless color evokes a restful, soothing mood, perfect for a bedroom or bath. In a larger room, the one-color treatment unifies the space and focuses attention on the furnishings and accessories that fill it.

If you'd like to repeat the wall color on your ceiling, but want the look to be lighter, dilute the wall paint with white in a ratio of about 80 percent white to 20 percent wall color. Since ceilings appear in shadow, the resulting diluted color will still relate favorably to the wall color...http://www.bhg.com/decorating/color/basics/selecting-ceiling-color/

Is Wallpaper a Good Choice for Your Home?

Today, people are looking at innovative ideas to decorate their walls. Sometimes, just plain wall paint is not enough to add a fresh new perspective to your home. One option that is fast gaining popularity as compared to ordinary paint is wallpaper.

Wallpaper, available in plain textured and patterned graphics, is a type of material used to cover and beautify the inner walls of homes and offices. However, before you choose wallpaper, you must understand its benefits and disadvantages.

These days, wallpapers are available in a wide variety of colours, designs and patterns, to meet the ever-changing demands of customers. While using wallpapers, people have a broad range of options like polka dots, floral prints, geometrical shapes and landscapes that are not available with paint. The latest trends in wallpapers include bead, sequins, lace and ribbons, among others.

Another major advantage of wallpapers is that it is very durable and is resistant to wear and tear. Majority of the varieties now available are easy to scrub and hence can be easily maintained. The cleaning process is made easier as most wallpapers are coated and hence household stains can be easily removed.

Like the advantages, wallpaper has its pitfalls too. While choosing between paint and wallpaper, people are usually put off by the cleaning and maintenance process associated with wallpaper. People with small children usually do not opt for wallpaper as they can prove to be a risky combination.

Another disadvantage is the constant exposure to harsh sunlight and winds. Wallpapers fade faster when exposed to sunlight. Wallpapers are also not recommended in bathrooms as they can easily be damaged due to frequent contact with water and steam. The removal of existing wallpaper requires a lot of patience and the right equipment. While removing wallpaper, extreme care must be taken to ensure that the wall is not damaged.

Remember to weigh your options and check out your resources before choosing between wall paint and wallpaper. Both paint and wallpaper are equally attractive options and a lot of people are opting for a combination of both nowadays.

How to Paint the Exterior of a House

Few features of your home make an immediate visual impact like the exterior paint job. Superbly applied paint conveys your pride in your home and helps define its personality.

Step 1: Prep Your Surface
You may be tempted to get straight to the painting, but diligent prep work is critical to a professional-looking finish. According to Dan Lawson of Medallion Paint, "Ninety-five percent of good painting is having a good surface."

Before painting a new house with a stucco exterior, let the stucco cure for at least 28 days. Paint will not adhere properly to uncured stucco and may appear chalky or dusty.

If you're in a hurry, here's a tip from Richard Luks, construction manager for RSR Custom Renovations and Additions: "Keep the stucco wet by spraying it with a hose. If it's washed daily, it can cure in a week to 10 days."

If you are repainting an existing home, inspect the exterior walls and trim for chipping, peeling, mildew and other imperfections. Kill off mildew by applying a chlorine bleach solution with a garden sprayer. Then pressure-clean the entire exterior to remove dirt and old paint that has come loose.

Step 2: Caulk and Patch
Before you pick up a paint roller, grab a tube of caulk. It's vital to seal any cracks, as well as the joints where one type of exterior material meets another. This includes: window frames, door frames, molding and fascia boards.

If an old stucco surface has chips or pits, patch them with new stucco (and allow time to cure). Replace wood siding or fascia boards that show signs of rotting. Gently sand wood trim and doors to ensure an ideal surface for painting.

Step 3: Take Time to Prime
To get the most out of your paint job, prime with a quality sealer. "Sealer has high resin content," Dan explains. "That goes over old paint, locks everything in place and creates a good surface for the new paint to adhere to."

If you are repainting walls that have become chalky or dusty, select a chalky wall sealer. Paint will not stick to a dusty surface.

As for new construction, latex primer works well for vinyl and most wood siding. If you're working with stucco that is not fully cured, you can apply a hot stucco primer. This sidesteps the waiting period, allowing the surface to accept paint as soon as the primer dries. It's best, however, to let stucco cure for the recommended time period if possible.

Check the label on your primer or sealer to determine how long to wait before you begin painting.

Step 4: Choose Quality Exterior Paint
A good exterior paint is 100 percent acrylic latex. The formula consists of three main components:

- Pigments, which provide the color.
- Binders, which hold the pigment to the wall.
- Solvents, which make the paint spreadable. Today, most exterior paints are water-based.

As paint dries, the solvent evaporates, leaving behind only the pigments and binders. These are known as volume solids. Higher quality paints are generally higher in volume solids. They may also have better binders, which will hold the pigments in place longer. This improves durability.

To determine the percentage of volume solids in a brand of paint, check the manufacturer's website or ask your local distributor for a Technical Data Sheet. In general, paints labeled "premium" or "super-premium" are likely to be higher in volume solids than budget brands.

Step 5: Pick Colors With Curb Appeal
When it comes to color selection, there are so many choices that the decision can be overwhelming. If you're not sure where to start, spend some time driving around your neighborhood to see what appeals to you. Keep in mind that vibrant colors will fade sooner than more muted ones.

Be sure to consider the stylistic elements of your home — choose a color that complements your roofing material and any brick or stone accents. If you're having trouble deciding between two shades, paint sample swaths on a section of your home's exterior. Look at the result during different times of day to see which one you like best.

Before getting your heart set on a certain color, check with your neighborhood association and local building department to make sure there are no restrictions on paint colors in your area.

Step 6: Spray and Roll
The ideal way to paint exterior walls is called spraying and back-rolling. This method requires two people. One uses a sprayer to quickly and evenly spread paint across the surface. The other person follows behind, running a roller over the paint that has just been sprayed on. This delivers an even finish, particularly on textured surfaces like stucco.

"This offers the best of both worlds," Dan tells HGTV. "You get the speed of the sprayer and the evenness of the roller." To protect your windows, cover them with plastic before you begin spraying, or use a sprayer with a shield.

If your budget allows, apply a second coat after the recommended dry time. Muted colors cover better than bright ones. For vibrant shades, you may require a second coat just to get the full color.

"Two coats are always going to give you a better result," Dan adds. "It evens everything out to put a better shell on your house. You'll get more life out of the paint job with a second coat."

Step 7: Finishing Touches
The last step is to paint the doors, fascia, molding, shutters and other decorative details. The best tools here are "a steady hand and a good brush," Richard says. You can save a little time by using 6-inch "hot dog" rollers to get the paint on quicker, particularly along the length of the fascia. But there are no short cuts to a professional finish — you have to put in the time to get the best results.

Depending on your climate, a superb paint job with top-of-the-line materials can hold up for as long as 10 years

Fabulous feature wall

Feature walls are simple but high impact ways to transform any room in your home. Take a look at our 10 best ideas to add a dramatic focal point to a space, from a chic French toile de jouy design to fashionable shimmering metallic wallpaper.

Choose a feature wall in an elegant symmetrical botanical print. Position a dark-wood console table and large mirror against the wall and team with vintage-style accessories such as a tasselled lamp or picture frame.

Open up a narrow room with a feature wall along one side to add interest to the space. Choose a modern monochrome wallpaper design and team with wood flooring and furniture.

Metallics are a hot trend in wallpaper right now, and make fantastic feature walls. The softly shimmering effect it creates is a great option for feature walls. Enhance the look by introducing metallic furniture such as a mirrored side table or a silvered chest of drawers.

A perfect setting for toile de jouy wallpaper is an attic or guest bedroom to add a welcoming feeling to a space. If the room is small and you don’t want it to overwhelm the wall just decorate the lower half, or below the picture rail. Paint the top half of the wall in a natural hue to tone with the the wallpaper.

Add a bold feature wall in the bathroom or kitchen with a patterned feature wallpaper or paint colour that really pops. Keep the rest of the room scheme neutral.

An oversized headboard in a bold block colour or sumptuous texture makes a great standout feature in a bedroom. Position the headboard against a powder-blue floral patterned feature wall for a luxe feature wall feature.

For a calming and sophisticated room design, in the living room or bedroom, try layering neutral tones. Add interest to a relaxing design with darker tones on one wall, such as a chocolate or olive green hue. Introduce subtly patterned fabrics with furnishings to build up depth to the space.

Why Wallpaper

Paint vs. Wallpaper
Cost Analysis by Canada Wallcoverings Corp.

While few people would debate the aesthetic excellence of wallcoverings over paint, some might be surprised to learn that, over time, vinyl wallcoverings are also a wise economical choice. According to the latest Hite Report, developed for The Bell Systems by Jim Hite, lifecycle analysis shows that wallcoverings now last five times longer than paint, under normal usage conditions. Most vinyl wallcoverings can retain their original beauty and performance characteristics for at least 15 years, whereas a painted surface must be cleaned more frequently to maintain its appearance, and generally requires repainting approximately every three years.

While the initial investment is higher, choosing vinyl wallcovering over paint can result in a savings of 30% or more over time. The following model is based on commercial usage. In home decor, the savings can be even greater.

Our model is in United States Dollars and based on information from the Hite Report. The model is a 384 square foot office. Assuming that the initial cost to prime and paint is $173.00 (or $0.45 per sq. ft.), and that the room will be repainted every 3 years, the cost of maintaining this office over a 15 year period, with paint, will be $1,037.00, provided the cost of material and labor does not increase over the next 15 years.

Using vinyl wallcoverings estimated at $1.69 per square foot including cost and installation, we assume a worker will wash the walls every 5 years at a cost of $0.33 per sq. ft., bringing the cost to $1.79 per sq. ft. over a 15 year period to $687.00. 6 Top Reasons Why Painting Your Home Protects Your Home's Value

Exterior Painting Protects Your Home From Inclement Weather

Painting a home's exterior walls, trim and other home surfaces will help the homeowner protect the home from inclement Minnesota weather, particularly ice and snow. Moisture can enter wall openings, for example, where squirrels or woodpeckers create even a small opening. If dampness is sealed into walls, it can ruin insulation and encourage mold and rot.

Protect Your Home With Thorough Professional Preparation Before Painting

Proper preparation of the home's surfaces prior to applying the paint may be more important than the fresh coat of paint itself. William Nunn Painting spends needed time upfront make repairs to surfaces that house nibbling pests may have caused, scraping off any peeling paint, and use top caulking materials and techniques to seal and protect your home first. Timely repairs keep weather out and protect the life of a home's exterior.

Choose Painting Professionals Who Use Low VOC and Zero-VOC Paints

William Nunn Painting’s years of experience has gained keen insights to how paints perform over time. A quality exterior paint job that lasts longer goes further to protect a house from wood failure and other expensive repairs. Advances in resin technology are better in some VOC paint products than others, flow and level better, eliminating potential bubbles, and thereby the paint applications last longer. Our customers benefit from our access to the most durable and beautiful primers and topcoats from both domestic and European makers. Although traditional oil formulations are still best for some applications, we are sourcing the finest in low VOC, waterborne coatings for our projects. If you are facing wood failure on you home's exterior surfaces, view our Woodfinishing Gallery to consider our quality work.

The Right Paint Choice Promotes Healthy Indoor Air Quality

Low VOC waterborne paints emit fewer “volatile organic compounds” into the air as they dry, making them often the favorite choice when considering the overall environmental impact. We purchase quantities carefully to eliminate wasteful leftover materials that will inevitably need to be disposed of later. Thinners and solvents that we use in the course of our work are saved and sent to be recycled. Protecting the air and environment is an extension of the same wise stewardship that citizens exercise when protecting their homes and commercial buildings through prompt painting maintenance.

Painting Reduces Home Dust, Stains, and Greasy Fingerprints

Particularly in homes with plaster walls, Keeping home interior walls, trim and other surfaces painting upkeep on schedule can minimize dust and dirt that comes over time from building up and causing a breakdown in your home's painted surfaces. Better quality paint keeps plaster in check, and dust to a minimum. For old homes or tough interior surfaces, using Benjamin Moore, or Fine Paints Of Europe paint or finishing products will extend the life of your home.

Paint Seals Surfaces From Damaging Humidity and Steam

Painted surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens need to hold up under routine use that includes exposure to humidity and steam. A quality paint job with the proper product (sheen) can last many times longer in a bath or kitchen that sees everyday use. Painting maintenance & upkeep may make the difference the life of your painted surfaces. Both out interior and exterior painting protects your home for years to come.

9 Ways to Give Skirting Boards the Attention They Deserve

Lara Sargent (modified)

We’re used to treating skirting boards as a necessary but uninspiring element in our homes – an essential division between wall and floor, and a board up against which we can confidently mop or vacuum. But why not make the most of these stretches of woodwork and turn them into a design feature, as you might a cornice? From employing them to guide the eye through a space to using them to add a ribbon of bright colour, check out these ideas for smart skirtings with a stylish twist.

Lead the eye with dark paint
Dark-hued, dramatic skirting boards are an effective design tool in a long, skinny hallway. The eye is naturally drawn to the darker bands of colour as they travel around the corners and curves, leading the focus to the far end of the space. Keep the walls and ceiling pale for the best effect.

Double up
It’s not often you come across a two-tone skirting board, but the double layer of colour can certainly enhance plain white wall and transform the skirting board into a real design feature. Stick to simple monochrome shades or the look might become too fussy.

Add a streak of colour
A daring flash of colour and your skirting boards can be as valuable a design accessory as your choice of cushions and lampshades.

Give wallpaper added oomph
Thick band of soft grey skirting can beautifully highlights the delicate details in the patterned wallpaper. The clever use of soft colour brings the skirting alive and help give your room a welcoming appeal.

Light them up
Simple, robust skirting boards not only balance the architectural proportions of a space, they can be embedded with LEDs to create a subtle wash of light across the floor. Paint walls and woodwork in the same colour to enhance the fluid, airy ambience.

Go for one colour
A single colour used on walls and woodwork creates a strong, unfussy look. The all-over shade can make the space appear larger than it is, as there will be no contrasting skirting boards to break up the planes of colour.

Do a paint job
In a new-build dwelling devoid of original woodwork (or with very thin panels), simply re-create skirting boards with a steady hand, a pot of paint and a spirit level (there’s no room for wobbly paintwork with something so visible).

Enhance the elegance
Elegant, half-height wall panels elevate the humble skirting board into a different league. If you’re lucky enough to have original panelling, paint it in a slightly darker tone than the walls and let the authentic beauty speak for itself. If not, cheat with mouldings and a dado rail fixed above the skirting board for a similar effect.

Pick out pastels
This is a quirky twist on a straightforward paint job. Choose two of your favourite chalky pastels and paint walls in a single pretty hue and skirting boards and door frames in an earthier, contrasting shade.

Why Neutral Colors Are Best

By Shelley Little

Do you think neutral colors are boring? We are going to debunk the myth that bold is better. Of course, there is always room for pops of color in your life, but there are a lot of good reasons to stick with a neutral color scheme for your interior design.

Neutral colors don’t have to be boring! In fact, a calm, neutral backdrop allows you to bring out some pretty bold elements into your design that may otherwise look garish. So, put down that can of red paint, at least for a moment, and read this first…

Here are the top reasons to stick with a simpler, more neutral tone-on-tone color scheme for your home interior:

Neutral Colors Show Off Furnishings and Textures

The textural elements of a room often get over looked. Interior designers are schooled and excel at this textural design secret— a neutral backdrop creates a welcoming interior when mixed with warm textures such as rough hewn wooden elements, shiny tiles, nubby linens, and brushed velvets.

If walls are painted in a bright orange, for example, then the bold color takes center-stage, making any textural elements disappear into the backdrop. This is not necessarily a bad thing, when done properly, but it can make a room feel unwelcoming by omitting a layered, textural design.

Simply put, layering textiles is the key to creating a warm, well-designed space, and neutral colors allow you to create this space more easily. Scandinavians have had this design style down-pat for centuries.

Look to the bathroom in the image below— the neutral color scheme allows the modern tub, shiny tiles, rustic wooden ladder, and modern dark wood vanity to come to the forefront and tell the story of the room design.

Never Grow Tired Of Neutral

Have you ever painted a room in a bold, bodacious color? If you did, how long did it take for you to pick up the paint brush again, covering the once-loved color with something more calm? Another example of bold-gone-wrong— the bright red couch that you thought you just had to have. Fast-forward three years later—yeah, you are pretty sick of it now aren’t you?

This is the best feature of neutral colors—you will never grow tired of them. Neutral will always be a classic. If the mood strikes and you decide you need some vibrant hues in your life, then you simply add a few inexpensive pillows in a bold color, or buy a beautiful bouquet of bright flowers.

Think of a neutral color scheme as an investment, allowing you to avoid buyers remorse and ensuring an interior design that will never grow old.

The bedroom in the image below is a perfect example of neutral done right. Imagine this bedroom with bold walls…it certainly wouldn’t be the same calming bedroom retreat that it is now.

Neutral Colors Offer Colorful Opportunities

We hear you. You want a unique interior that speaks to your vibrant personality, so you think a neutral home wouldn’t work for you, right? Wrong!

This is all the more reason that you should choose a neutral backdrop for your interior. With a neutral background, your personal tastes can come to the forefront, allowing you to show-off all your cool design choices and personal style.

There is a reason designers commonly choose neutral walls, especially in modern interiors, it allows the lines of high-quality furniture and the architecture of a room to come alive and be noticed. Look at the bold black-and-white chevron cushions in the image below— they work because the backdrop is neutral and they certainly show-off a bold personal style.

Also, the architectural elements in this photo come alive thanks to a calmer color scheme. The wooden wall and vaulted ceiling would have been lost within a bolder backdrop.

Neutral Works For Any Style

We have already touched upon why neutral is best for modern interiors, but here is the great thing about neutral colors—they literally work with any style! Whether you are modern, traditional, eclectic, or love rustic country charm— a neutral backdrop is ideal for you.

Home stager, Barb Schwarz, notes that white and grey neutral walls (which are very popular right now) allow a room to seem larger, more airy, clean and welcoming.

She adds that these neutral colors work with any style or range of taste, allowing prospective home buyers to envision their own furnishings in the space.

The living room in the image below certainly attests to that statement. The grey-on-grey color scheme is anything but cold. The room appears very clean, welcoming, well-designed and warm!

So there you have it, neutral color schemes are the ideal choice for any interior style statement. Use neutral colors in your home to ensure that you never grow tired of your design choices, thereby creating a classic home that never gets old.

Neutral colors are also great options for modern interiors, allowing the architectural elements of your design to take center-stage. Plus, if you get bored of your neutral backdrop, then you simply add a few inexpensive, brightly-colored cushions. Proving, that neutral is anything but boring, rather it is for the savvy home designer that loves keeping their options open.

Your space defines your personality.
