ABOBAKU
Abobaku
You who flees fate
Can your mortal limbs outrun the gods?
Nor the caves of Ife hide your fleeing head
From the eyes of deities of land and seas

Abobaku
Fattened for such a time as this
Marked with the blood of fallen thrones
To stand on unsteady feet and ever ready
To fall whenever the thrones fall


Abobaku
The gods have turned deaf ears
To your daily sacrifices and pleas
Oba! Live forever, but today forever ends
And suddenly you flee as forever ends


Abobaku
Servant in life and at death
Slave of mortals and spirits
Ah! Did you wrong the gods?
That no sacrifice can save your head?

Abobaku
At your homestead a sparrow chirps a dirge
Your lamp slowly dims by the hand of tradition
And your kinsmen mope in silent wails
Waiting for your sorrowful return
