It is not the royal family of kano. But the the Sanusi ruling clan. The grand father Muhammed Sanusi 1 was a staunch member of the Tijjaniya sect of Islam. The Tijjaniya who are a mass oriented movement is slightly different different from the quaddriya which is more prevalent in northern Nigeria. Sheik Ibrahim Nyass is the leader of the Tijjaniya sect. Muhammad Sanusi 11 is only paying homage to the family's spiritual guide. Students of contemporary history have posited that Sanusi 11 might suffer the deposition that Sanusi 1 suffered because of the minority status of the Tijjaniya in Northern Nigeria. Already six Tijjaniya adherents have been sentenced to death for blasphemy in Kano under his rule.
