SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
1. Generate an active hub of NSEC membership that will participate in SCB, TBA, BES, and other well recognised Biodiversity Conservation organization activities at national, sectional and global levels;
2. Develop and implement conservation research in Nigeria that meet specific challenges
in a bid to influence policies at state, national and continental levels.
3. Facilitate and create opportunities for capacity building and career development in
biodiversity conservation in Nigeria;
4. Create platforms for bilateral sharing of ideas and experiences among Nigerian
conservational professionals and other Africans across the continent;

STRATEGIC FOCI
NSEC hereby adopts the following strategic foci:
I. Serve as channel of communication and information sharing among the members.
II. Convene fora to share research findings, initiate discussions and collaboration among
conservation professionals and practitioners.
III. Facilitate skill development, fundraising and mentorship programmes.
IV. Engage in information dissemination, outreach and sensitisation on biodiversity
conservation.
V. Increase application of science to management and policy.

I. Serve as channel of communication and information sharing among the members

The aim of this focus of the strategic plan is to communicate benefits and opportunities of Biodiversity Conservation to members in the Chapter, as well as initiate active membership, and involvement and participation of members in Conservation activities.
Short term
• Encourage membership registration, and active participation of members in conservation
activities at chapter, section, working groups, and global levels.
• Clearly communicate the benefits and opportunities of joining NSEC to the Chapter
members and other conservation professionals.
Long term
• Constantly assess the needs and interests of members for necessary intervention and
linkages.
• Facilitate sharing of information that can enhance career development and build
capacity for members.
• Develop a plan to improve membership retention.

II. Convene fora to share research findings, initiate discussions and collaboration among conservation professionals and practitioners

This focus of the strategic plan covers organisation of high level scientific forum of the Organization aim at facilitating information sharing, as well as local and international collaborations and networking among the Chapter members and other conservation professionals. It also include
organisation of skills and capacity building programmes.




Short term
• Organise hosting of conference on “Biodiversity Conservation ”. This scientific forum is to initiate discussions among students, professionals and practitioners on current and pertinent conservation issues, and provide opportunities for presentation of current research findings. In addition, Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Chapter will be held during the meeting.
• Workshops and symposia will be organised either before, during or after the conference
for skills and capacity building.
Intermediate
• Plan toward putting together of the bid for hosting all Africa Conservation scientist meeting to facilitate international collaborations and networking.
Long term
• Convene Chapter’s conference at least once every two years to create platforms for
sharing of ideas, facilitate collaboration among conservation professionals and practitioners, as
well as initiate discussions on the science and practice of conservation in Nigeria and Africa at
large.

III. Facilitate skill development, fundraising and mentorship programmes

This focus of the strategic plan specifically target mentorship, skills and capacity building
programmes, and raising and disbursement of funds for young researchers within the Chapter.
Short term
• Develop mentorship programs and initiatives on research areas and opportunities,
particularly those targeted at future conservation professionals within the Organization.
Intermediate
• Initiate collaboration with reputable conservation organizations in Nigeria for training,
as well as skills and capacity building programme for the members.
• Establish a “ Conservation Foundation”. This is the charity arm
of the Organization that will be responsible for provision and distribution of funds to young
conservation researchers, and other approved conservation activities in Nigeria.
• Exploit opportunities for consultancy services with reputable organisations and
institutions within and outside Nigeria.

Long term
• Support the development of training, workshops and educational programs within the
Organization that address needs of conservation professionals, practitioners and students in
Nigeria.
• In collaboration with Top Conservation Organization, seeks funding for short-term and long-term research and training for conservation related activities or programmes in Nigeria.

IV. Engage in information dissemination, outreach and sensitisation on biodiversity conservation

This focus of the strategic plan is to establish a robust and updated information sharing
platform, and timely dissemination of information for benefit of members. It is also aimed at
supporting dissemination of high-quality conservation science through publications that meet
the needs of students, researchers, and practitioners.


Short term
• In collaboration with some conservation organization, set up a website for wider awareness creation of the Organization activities and other relevant information.
• Establish presence on social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter for active
and current information sharing, and on time virtual discussions.
• Establish a newsletter with the aim of disseminating quick and pertinent conservation
information on topical issues, create public awareness, and provide information on
conservation opportunities.

Long term
• Establish a journal for dissemination of quality scientific research findings.
• Promote advocacy and outreaches for biodiversity conservation at all levels of
education in Nigeria. Specifically, plan will be made to get the attention of Primary and Secondary Schools.

V. Increase application of science to management and policy

• Promote advocacy and implementation of policy in support of biodiversity conservation
in Nigeria.
• Foster collaboration among conservation managers, decision-makers, and scientists to
critically evaluate conservation actions and influence conservation policy.
• Involve in release of policy statements on conservation issues that needed urgent
attention and intervention.


COMITTEES AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE
STRATEGIC FOCI

(A) STANDING COMMITTEES

(1) MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Short term
• Encourage membership registration, and active participation of members in NSEC
activities at section, working groups, and global levels.
• Clearly identify the benefits of NSEC membership and communication of same to the
Chapter members and other conservation professionals.
Long term
• Constantly assess the needs and interests of members for necessary intervention and
linkages.
• Develop plans to improve membership retention at local and global levels.






(2) COMMUNICATION AND OUTREACH COMMITTEE

Short term
• In collaboration with the Top Conservation Organization, set up active website for wider awareness creation of the Chapter’s activities, and other relevant information for global coverage.
• Establish presence on social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter for wider
coverage of information dissemination and on time virtual discussions.
Intermediate
• Establish “Biodiversity Conservation Club (BCC)” in Primary and Secondary Schools.

(3) CAPACITY BUILDING COMMITTEE

Short term
• Seek for opportunities and facilitate sharing of information that can enhance career
development and build research capacity for members.

• Develop mentorship programs and initiatives on research areas and opportunities,
particularly those targeted at future conservation professionals within the Organization.
Long term
• Support the development of training, workshops and educational programs within the
Chapters that address needs of professionals and students.

(4) FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Short term
• Embark on activities leading to raising of fund for the Organization.
• Exploit opportunities for consultancy services with reputable organisations and
institutions within and outside Nigeria, with sole benefit of members and the Organization.
• Coordinate the activities of “Conservation Foundation”; the charity arm of the Organization responsible for provision and distribution of funds to young
researchers and other approved conservation activities in Nigeria.
Long term
• In collaboration with Top conservation organization, seek funding for short-term and long-term research and training for conservation related activities or programmes in Nigeria.

(5) PUBLIC ADVOCACY AND POLICY COMMITTEE

• Promote advocacy and implementation of policy in support of biodiversity conservation
in Nigeria.

(B) AD-HOC COMMITTEE

MEETINGS AND PLANNING COMMITTEE
• Plan the First Conference of the Organization starting with 2016 Proposed Conference. The Meeting is to create platforms and initiate discussions on the science and practice of conservation, as well as facilitate collaboration among students, conservation professionals and practitioners in Nigeria and Africa at large.
• Put together the bid for hosting of Africa Conservation scientist as stated under Focus II of this strategic Plan.
