@ the bolded, Who taught you that? http://www.thenigerianvoice.com/news/97511/37/nigerian-mobile-operators-pay-35-tax-report.html

Back to topic, what i meant was, they spend billions generating their own electricity using petrol and diesel, just like Nigerians also spend billions or even trillions nationwide daily generating their own electricity, which means our petrol pump stations and oil marketers are earning billions and trillions, yet our tax system doesn't capture much of this money being sank into the oil sector consumption

I hope you know, you and I are the ones paying for services provided by MTN and Co, from which they pay taxes. Telcos pay taxes from the monies they collect from us. How many times do you want to tax the diesel used by the telcos. Their suppliers already pay taxes for the fuel, the telcos use contractors and they are responsible for these taxes at the point of loading at the depots.

Don't be silly.
These telcos make massive profits despite the large running costs. Demanding quality service should never be optional.

Mr man, haven't you seen their financial reports? Don't you know the cost for everything you listed is in the charges given to consumers? If business is so expensive for them while still in the country? Simple, the profits out ways the cost. Seems like you make your money from them hence your support for their high charges.

Also they have pay taxes as well as dues imposed on them by NCC and other bodies we don't hear of. And let's not forget why the business was set-up in the first place, PROFIT! Yet some people feel it's justifiable to steal from them in the name of cheats and tweaks. In future if they start their own business, they should not complain if their wares are stolen from under their noses. It's Karma at work.

A good number of greenfield sites are linked to the power grid, at least almost all those I was involved in constructing.
The problem, at least in such cases is the lack of power supply through the dedicated transformers, making the operators resort to burning diesel to keep the stations up.

Consultville:
Telecommunications tower operators spend some N175 million every day on diesel which is used to power generators at their towers housing base transceiver stations (BTS) that make it possible for Nigerians to use GSM service to make and receive calls.

Telecom towers house base stations that Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and 4G internet service providers use to deliver services to their customers.

Nigeria CommunicationsWeek investigations revealed that a co-located tower which houses 3 to 5 base stations use 20KVA generator to supply power while a tower that houses a single base station uses 15KVA generator. More so, each generator consumes 50 litres of diesel per day especially in recent years when public power system is highly erratic.

Nigeria Communications Week gathered that presently, towers run on generator in an average of 20 hours a day. This means that 25,000 of towers in the country that use generators consume some 1.25million litres of diesel a day.

It was learnt that this quantity of diesel consume by generators at different towers cost tower operators about N175million at diesel pump price of N140 per litre.

Isn't that why the electricity sector was sabotaged in the past - some folks wanted these huge amount spent on diesel, so they can stay richer - at the expense of comfort for all Nigerians.

They are all liars. They make far more profits than all these petty expenses. Government needs to start probing into their finances.

So many years of exploitation of ordinary Nigerians with the connivance of some people in power.

Things like this has to stop now.

See my original statement...it has been modified.

The problem is that power supply in Nigeria is not working. If it was working...we would have been paying less.
Actually for a market of 200million ppl, we should be paying less, they kno that n will keep rubbin such figures in our faces to get us all emotional about their running cost but wont tell us hw mch they make in a calendar year. Do u kno hw mch they make?

We Nigerians lyk to give excuses for d exploitative propensities of ds multinationals. That is hw we believed the big fat lie from d pit of hell that we cdnt hv Per Second Billing until "our own" Glo showed up and busted that myth.

Question is, from then til now has there been some DRASTIC IMPROVEMENT in power or has diesel started sellin like Satchet water? Nope!

I dare say, our calls can get cheaper without their devil's fingers called T&C, which alot of times over-apply, evn wt d prevailin conditions that they r tryin to paint like they r doin us a big favour being here!

For me getting or bringin back our own Telecom company will do d magic!

Really? That's quite a huge amount if you calculate it in a year.
Why not make a one time investment into the power sector with that and ensure there is constant electricity. That will pay them more in the long run.

Might not be a wise thing to say. Just thinking outside the box. Heard it will cost us about 30billuon dollars to provide electricity to Nigerians. I see opportunity tho.

Another alternative is for say three Telecoms coy to come together and operate via a SINGLE BASE STATION, USING SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS (Batteries, inverters, Panels, e.t.c).
The setup cost may be initially high but it is cheaper in the long run.

Moreover, PMB's Govt is making a lot of effort to ensure we all go beyond those "bad times" of 2hours of electricity per week, as experienced under that clueless Jonathan

My question is, will they continue to spend such amount for years even at this time without making their own profit?

Take a look at the promo they are doing every now and then, if they are losing why will they continue to do promo?

The government can only assist them by increasing electricity generation, to help them reduce cost...

I know they will not agree with your post but your are the only reasonable individual here.

See as everybody shouts profits not knowing this is an industry that continues to drop prices even when operating cost /cost of diesel isn't dropping over the years. This is an industry that almost all the operators are laying of staff codedly because it isn't as rosy as it use to be. This is the only industry that pays tax for the same base station to three tiers of government (LGA, state and fg).
If nothing changes soon, Nigerians will be shocked because no where in the world are operators generating their own power, running their own fibre, providing their own security for base stations.

Government folds her hands and do nothing but collects money and the people think they should not make profit because they are in business. The same people shouting profit are the ones hacking the systems in collaboration with insiders (cheats),using cheats daily(non revenue generating traffic) and the number is massive.

In the last two years, the year on year profit of these operators are actually going down apart from Etisalat. If something isn't done many more will become unemployed because things are definitely not as rosy as Nigerians think for these operators.
