Police arrest 18 in Ekiti over secret military training
From Ifedayo Sayo, Ado-Ekiti

THE Ekiti State police command at the weekend arrested 18 suspected cult members who were allegedly being trained in the art of handling guns.

The suspects allegedly recruited by a council chairman were said to have been arrested at their training ground by men of the state Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). They are currently being detained at the SARS headquarters, where the council chairman was making efforts to get them released on bail.

Also arrested at the weekend is one Olusegun Adamu of Anaye quarters in Ikere-Ekiti, who was accused by security agents of sewing mobile police uniform for thugs.

He was picked up by security operatives on a tip off and allegedly detained at the State Security Service headquarters before he was released on bail on Saturday.

However, when the state police command was contacted as to whether Adamu was contracted to sew the police uniform, the command claimed that their uniforms were supplied from police headquarters.

The arrest of Adamu by security operatives, has confirmed rumour that some politicians were sewing mobile police uniform for thugs to be used during the election.

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, Awe Oladipupo, confirmed the arrest of the suspected cultists but explained that the activities of the cultists had nothing to do with re-run election in the state.

Meanwhile, the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) has lauded the decision of the Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, to keep his men off the polling units during the re-run election.

The party in a statement at the weekend, said it stood by one-man-one-vote at the election, noting that the state is peaceful and the people are willing to elect their own governor in an election devoid of any malpractice.

It called on the Federal Government to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and avoid a situation where anyone would be oppressed or intimidated through the deployment of soldiers to supervise election in the state.

The Ekiti PPA gave its advise as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Action Congress (AC) yesterday disagreed over alleged plot to destabilise the state ahead of the re-run election.

The PDP at a press conference addressed by the Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee of the Segun Oni Campaign Organisation, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, accused the AC of planning to destroy the state and cause confusion to gain undue advantage at the election.

But the AC said the PDP was only concocting false allegations to convince the Federal Government to release troops that would assist the party rig the election in its favour having allegedly lost the confidence of the people of the state.

The AC through its spokesman, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu, denied the allegation, saying the PDP was increasingly becoming frustrated at its rejection by the people of the state who refused to come out to attend their rallies.

Adeyeye at a press conference, alleged that AC leaders met in Ikoyi, Lagos State to strategise on how to destabilise the state during the re-run election.

According to him, these AC leaders had for long successfully used blatant lies, deceit, blackmail, betrayals and violence to achieve political success.

He claimed that a serving commissioner in Lagos State has been assigned to coordinate fake human rights bodies and persons who will be given fake accreditation tags as observers, saying the jobs of these people is to freely move about on the day of the election and report by phone, where voting appears not favourable to the AC.

Adeyeye further claimed that a governorship candidate of the AC in the South West during the last election is to coordinate movement of thugs and hoodlums to the state during the election.

Ekiti: SSS arrests man for sewing fake police uniforms

By Akin Oyedele, Ado-Ekiti

Operatives of the Ekiti State Command of the State Security Service have arrested a tailor, one Segun Adamu, said to be sewing fake police uniforms, in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Also, the men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad of the state police command arrested 18 suspected cultists allegedly being trained in gun handling in the same town, on Friday.

Men of the SSS were said to have arrested the tailor at Anaye Street on Friday, while sewing a large quantity of the police uniforms.

He was said to had been unable to give satisfactory answers as to who contracted him to sew the uniforms when interrogated on the spot, prompting his arrest.

A source said that the tailor was caught with an unspecified number of uniforms already sewn and a large quantity of clothes.

When our correspondent visited the office of the State Director of the SSS, Mrs. Florence Ikenone, on Sunday, she declined comments on the matter.

She said, "I'm a civil servant. And this is a secret service. You don't expect me to start telling you that we have arrested anybody in connection with what you mentioned."

When the SSS contacted the police authority over the matter, it was gathered that the police denied enlisting the service of the man to sew uniforms for their personnel.

The source said that the tailor was still being quizzed to disclose the identity of those that sent him after which he would be transferred to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

The SARS were also said to have swooped on a location in Ikere where an unnamed local government chairman was allegedly harbouring suspected cultists said to be part of those an unnamed political party planned to use for the rerun election.

The fiery looking men were said to have initially resisted arrest by the police following which some of them were shot on the foot to demobilise them.

Sensing that they might be killed, the suspects were said to have given themselves up leading to the arrest of the 18 of them, while some of them allegedly escaped.
