In my last post, I wrote about the harmful effects of hydrated silica or otherwise called wet sand included in toothpaste because of its abrasive & whitening effects. I guess by now you are probably becoming aware and cautious about the toothpaste you use. If not, then you may need to purse for a moment and check those ingredients that make up the toothpaste you have at home. Do you see something like Sodium lauryl sulfate in it? What about Sodium flouride, Sodium saccharin, Triclosan, Propelene glycol, DEA, and Sorbitol? All these ingredients are harmful to you and you need to seriously start thinking of their better alternatives.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant used because of its ability to foam. As a matter of fact, it is primarily used in making of soap for laundry works. It can cause sensitivity reactions in the eyes and skin and its inclusion in toothpaste has been linked to reactions in the gum and tongue of many people leading to mouth ulcer.

Sodium flouride is a by-product of aluminum manufacturing. It has long been propagated by dentists as good for stronger teeth. Even many manufacturers proudly advertise it as the active ingredients in their toothpaste. However, sodium flouride is a poison in itself used in rat poisoning and industrial pesticides. Deposits of it in the system especially when ingested by children can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and bone cancer.

Triclosan is included in toothpaste because it is anti-bacterial, belonging to the class of chlorophenol. United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified triclosan as a pesticide suspected of causing cancer in man, hence constitutes both human and environmental risks. It may reduce the amount of thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism in the body and also causes increase in antibiotics resistance. Researches at Virginia Tech have shown that when triclosan mixes with chlorinated tap water, it forms chloroform and the latter is toxic to human health.

Propylene glycol is included in toothpaste because of its wetting and surfactant properties. However, it is an active component in antifreeze. The Material Safety Data Sheets warns that propylene glycol can rapidly absorb into the skin with prolonged contact leading to brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.

Diethanolamine (DEA) is also included because it foams. However, DEA disrupts hormones and breaks down to form cancer-causing nitrates. According to Dr. Samuel Epstein, professor emeritus of Environmental & Occupational Medicine at the University of Illinois, repeated skin exposure to DEA can lead to increased risk of liver and kidney cancers.

Sorbitol, sodium saccharin and glycerol are artificial sweeteners that mask the bitter effects of all other 'atrocities' added to toothpaste. They can cause side effects including headache, nausea, vomiting, mood changes, abdominal pains, diarrhea and blurred vision.

So, what are the better alternatives?

Make sure you follow a regular cleaning method of your mouth everyday with toothpaste that contains only natural ingredients and safe yourself from mouth ailments. You will also be saving for yourself a lot of money you flush down the drains every day you brush with that toothpaste in your hand. These natural ingredients not only clean your mouth and teeth, they also remove odor, help repair the teeth, kill germs and balance the natural flora in your mouth. They are coconut oil, herbs such as seaweed, baking soda, table salt, essential & natural oils like xylitol and menthol.

Get the demonstration in my practical video tutorial on how to mix these ingredients in good ratio and also how to make other items commonly used at home including making of medicated dusting powder, antiseptics & germicide, bleach making, water bath cleaner, liquid soap and shampoo.
