opera sponsored web pass, which is an opportunity to enable someone sponsor another person's data.

The business development manager operator sales, SSA, Murray Spark described this as a service that compresses data.

He said: "We are happy to be associated with Payporte as it is actually thinking out of the box. We have 23 million active users in Nigeria so this is our own way of making internet access comprehensive and affordable by packaging the web differently. The opera sponsored web pass enables brands to sponsor no-cost internet access through mobile operators to provide their customers with easy-to-understand methods of accessing the net."

He added: "The Opera software also enables users shop online with confidence without running out of data. To have a free entry to the web, all you have a data enabled device.

"We are working with big brands of the telecommunications companies to help monetise their data. We view internet access as a universal right. It is also a way of reinforcing the Payporte platform and also, helping in internet penetration. The approach is most innovative."

Vice president, Opera Software, Africa, Richard Monday, stated that software endeavours to pioneer solutions that facilitate low or no-cost access to mobile internet. "We are excited to work with Payporte and our operator partners in Nigeria to help bring more people online," he added.

According to a research company, Ipsos, Nigeria takes the leads in Africa in terms of online shopping uptake with over half of internet users having engaged with online shopping portals. However, data usage in Nigeria remains low in comparison to mobile penetration. Initiatives such as these aim to provide a free taste of the internet for those who do not regularly go online.
