Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal
Road Safety Corps [FRSC], Boboye Oyeyemi, has said
that possession of National Identity Card will be one
major criterion before the issuance of driver’s licence to the motoring public.
Oyeyemi stated this when the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission [NIMC], Chris Onyemenam, paid him a working visit recently to fine-tune plans on the harmonisation of the data base of the two agencies of government.
He, however, said the policy would take effect only
after the harmonisation and integration of data base
among relevant agencies of government.
He also pointed out that National Identity Cards could be used in place of permanent voter cards during election when all relevant government agencies must have harmonised and integrated their data base in the NIMC.
According to him, “When National Identity Card is in
place, there is no need for permanent voter cards
during elections.”
“By the time we finish the whole process, it will serve a lot of purpose.”
The FRSC boss, who underscored the need for the
harmonisation of biometrics of Nigerians by relevant government agencies, said the exercise would reduce duplication of data bases as well as reduce multiple identification.
He also pointed out that in the face of current
dwindling revenue of government and scarce
resources, the harmonisation would save huge
resources on the part of government.
Therefore, he pledged the FRSC’S unflinching support to the success of the project, adding that all relevant agencies of government must work together in compliance with the presidential directive on the harmonisation of data base. Earlier, the Director-General of NIMC, Chris Onyemenam, had enumerated the benefits of having harmonised and integrated data base among the agencies of government.
He further pointed out that the exercise would
eliminate falsification of age among Nigerians,
adding that it would also achieve digital environment in Nigeria.
Onyemenam revealed that he had already consulted
with the management of Central Bank of Nigeria as
well as the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] on the harmonisation of data
base.
He stressed the need for all government agencies
involved in the registration of biometrics to col
laborate to ensure the success of the exercise
