It is a known fact that the greatest asset a country have is its citizens. A healthy citizen will contribute immensely towards the growth and development of their country.

This singular fact has necessitated a great input of energy towards the health sector by government at all levels and non-governmental agencies both local and international.

A large amount of funds has also been directed towards the health sector by several multinationals in other to ensure optimal health to the residents in the neighbourhood they carry out their business.

There are a lot of factors that contributes to the health of an individual, factors such as food or diet, exercise, adequate rest/sleep, daily lifestyles e.t.c.

This article will be focusing on some important points in the choice of your food.

Carbohydrates are foods that boost energy; they don’t need to be eliminated totally but must be consumed in reasonable quantities. Grains and processed sugars in particular should be minimized.

The major problem with grains is that it increases the blood sugar level and also contains a lot of anti-nutrients which prevents your body from absorbing some minerals.

Hence, when it comes to eating carbohydrates, stick to the good carbohydrates that are not processed and refined such as brown bread, cereals, and brown-rice etc.

Focus on quality protein sources such as chicken, fish, sea foods, beans, etc. Proteins are body building foods; they repair worn-out tissues thereby boosting the immunity of an individual. Studies have shown that proteins lower the blood pressure of individuals. One study found that in addition to lowering blood pressure, a high protein diet also reduce cholesterol and triglycerides.

Eat more fruits and vegetables: Including fruits and vegetables as part of your diet may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and some forms of cancer.

The fiber in fruits and vegetables may help to lower the blood cholesterol levels, fruits rich in potassium like oranges, banana, pineapples helps in maintaining a healthy blood pressure.

Women of child bearing age or in their first trimester of pregnancy need folate (folic acid), a nutrient that is found in fruits and vegetables. Folate reduces the risk of birth defects during your baby’s development.

Fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals that may help prevent or delay disease and help maintain good health.

Be cautious about hidden calories and inflammation causing ingredients in condiments.
These condiments contain a lot of calories and metabolism damaging High Fructose Corn Syrup(HFSc).These chemicals are harmful to our tissues and if not checked properly has the ability to cause cancer.

Most people don’t realize that they are addicted to sugar. Excessive consumption of sugar is very dangerous to the health of an individual. Not only does sugar make you fat, it is one of the direct causes of diabetes, obesity, heart diseases etc.

Avoid consuming sugar. If you must, ensure it is only a small amount you include in your daily diet.

Always remember your health brings wealth and not t vice-versa.
