These are some of the common grammatical
errors made in our universities and other places.
This article is not to make jest of anyone, but to
call people to attention. Thanks as you read!
1). Incorrect: I am going to the academics.
The word academics is nothing but the plural of
“academic”,which means a scholar
(lecturer/student),and it also means a member of
the academy(i.e,a society of artists/scientists).
Correct: I am going to the academic area or the
academy, which means a place for learning or
training in general. But,if used within a school or
university context,it means the place where the
actual academic activities take place, other than
the hostels ,the staff quarters , e.t.c.
2). Incorrect: Twenty students are offering
Mathematics and the English language.
The word “offer” means to give something.
Correct: Twenty students are doing mathematics
and the English language.
Although, a university, faculty, or a department
can offer a course, a student cannot offer a course
or subject,but can do it.
3). Incorrect: Government will sponse the
programme.
Correct: Government will sponsor the programme.
The word “sponsor” is used both as a noun and
as a verb while the word “sponse” does not exist
in the English language.
4). Incorrect: Please gist me the outcome of the
meeting.
Correct: Please give me the gist of the meeting.
The word “gist” is used as a noun not as a verb.
5). Incorrect: I will write my exams next week.
Correct: I will sit/do my exams next week.
The word “write” doesn’t collocate with “exam” in
that context.
6). Incorrect: People are too much in the bank.
Correct: People are too many in the bank.
The word “much” is used for uncountable nouns
while “many” is used for countable nouns
7). Incorrect: I want to check my result but the
website/eportal is not going.
Correct: I want to check my result but the
website is not connecting/loading or the server is
not through/responding.
cool. Incorrect: I called your number but it was not
going (through).
Correct: I dialled your number/line but it was not
reachable/available.
