The Lagos State Government has announced its plans strictly enforce the Road Traffic Law 2012, restricting trailers and long vehicles from plying the metropolis between 6am and 9pm.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Oluseyi Whenu, who spoke to journalists on the backdrop of the fatal accident involving a container-laden trailer on Thursday at Ojuelegba, said the trailer contravened Section 2 (i) and 2 (ii) of the Traffic Law.

In a statement on Sunday, Whenu said the state government would henceforth go tough on any trailer and long vehicle that contravened the law as such vehicle would be impounded and made to pay the stipulated fine accordingly.

The statement added that the leaders of various transport unions and associations in the state had resolved to support the new directive introduced to apprehend traffic offenders.

Whenu, at the meeting clarified the state government’s position on the new directive, saying officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority had not been withdrawn from performing their statutory responsibilities on the road.

He explained that the new directive would lay more emphasis on flawless flow of traffic, while traffic offenders would be booked and expected to pay their fines within the stipulated period in line with the state government’s covenant with residents to make life easier for them.

Whenu solicited the co-operation and support of all transport operators in ensuring the success of the new traffic initiative.

He urged the operators to remind their members not to see the consideration by the state government as a sign of weakness by attacking LASTMA or any other enforcement agents, saying this would be sanctioned in accordance with relevant provisions of the law.

“The state government has also directed that all commercial passenger vehicles should obey all traffic rules and regulations by stopping only at designated bus-stops, close bus doors while in motion among other provisions of the law,” Whenu said.

State Chairman of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Musa Muhammed, who spoke on behalf of other union leaders, welcomed the new initiative, pledging the support of their members to cooperate with the state government in maintaining law, order and sanity in the transport sector.

Asin within or without the time Which time una wan make them de ply?? Before the try such, the should consider somethings....
1. Are there good roads??
2. In case of accidents, are there functioning emergency lines??
3. Are there standby ambulance trucks??
4. Are there enough and functional fire service trucks through out the state??
5. Don't the think the high rate of truck snatching and diversion would increase, are there steps to curtail this??
6. Is there functional street lamps to serve as broadlight to the drivers??
7. Don't the think drivers would tend to sleep off on the wheels since its night??
8. Petroleum truck drivers, is there any law binding them against drunk driving and if there is any, would any agency be there to enforce it??
9. Don't u think accidents are not majorly caused by carelessness to bad roads??
10. There should be a law or an experte law compelling FRSC to work at night, and if there is, then the should be adequately trained to sooth their new roles....
Lemme drop for now...
By the way am FTC.... No big deal... Just a bit of joblessness....not saying am jobless though...

The rate at which trailers ply Nigerian roads is just too much, they cause most of the accidents on major roads. If this policy can be taken serious and federal government fix the railways asap then they can also ban inter state movement of trailers, this would further reduce the numbers of accidents on the highways.

May all the souls lost due to some greedy people who dont value human lives as long as they making profit from their transport business, rest in peace

Good.

This is the best thing that would happen to Lagos and Nigeria in general..
I have been a super advocate of keeping trailers away in day time from metropolis, especially fuel tankers.

This things kill people everyday for Heaven's sake.
And we turn blind eyes yet we wonder how we can't develop as a people.

A lot of poster here didn't understand what the law is about hence, the lack of sense in their comment.

The law is the best for Lagos ; one, it will reduce lost our life secondly, it will reduce traffic jams.

Thumps up LSG
