16· Nigerian staple food cassava was brought to West Africa from Brazil by the Portuguese _ why does this sound like a lie?
Cassava is definitely not indigenous to Nigeria and probably the whole of west Africa. Its a verifiable fact. The Akpu we eat today wasn't what our far ancestors ate. I'll put the date it was introduced to Nigeria at the 18th century or later. Yam and cocoyam represented very well.

read it again he was tutored by an igbo man. Can an hausa man teach you how to write yoruba language ? Think with your head not anus. He was taught by an igbo man.

The alphabets used in writing Igbo language is invented by igbo abi? Even white people are taught their languages by foreigners who leant them in their own lands? You think every civilisation begins and end Aba market? The truth is that Ajayi Crowther taught you fathers to write igbo language.

The GM’s most electrifying advanced technology vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt concept, a battery-powered, extended-range electric passenger vehicle was produced by a Nigerian car designer named Jelani Aliyu.
Mr Jelani Aliyu hails from Sokoto State, Nigeria. General Motors is the world’s largest automobile maker. The car has been described as an American Revolution and one of the hottest concepts in the design line.
Jelani was born in 1966 in Kaduna, to Alhaji Aliya Haidara and Sharifiya Hauwa’u Aliyu. From 1971 to 1978, he attended Capital School, Sokoto, an excellent school and this served as a very productive educational experience for him. In 1978, he gained admission into Federal Government College, Sokoto, from where he graduated in 1983 with an award as the best in Technical Drawing.
Jelani was privileged to meet and make many good friends from all parts of the country and beyond during this time. He had tremendous encouragement and mentoring from his family and friends and his creative art develop the ed. He drew a lot, designed his own cars, and even built scale models of them, complete with exteriors and interiors.
After FGC, he got admission into the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to study Architecture, but soon discovered that curriculum did not support his future vision and plans.
After considering other institutions in Nigeria and their academic programmes, he concluded that only one of them had the study criteria that would support his future goals. The institution in which he chose to pursue his education was one he felt offered the best creative programmes and had experience that would give him the best foundation required to study Automobile Design abroad. That institution was the Birnin Kebbi Polytechnic. He was there from 1986 to 1988 and earned an associate degree in Architecture, with an award as Best All-Round Student. While there, he did some in depth research into home design and construction, looking into materials and structures that would be most compatible with our environment and climate; buildings that would stay cool in a hot environment with little, or no artificial electrical air conditioning. Upon graduation from the polytechnic, Jelani worked for a while at the Ministry of Works, Sokoto.
In 1990, Aliyu moved to Detroit, Michigan to enroll at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit under a Sokoto Schorlarship board sponsorship. Having always wanted to study Automobile Design, this was a dream come true and an absolutely fascinating experience. The course was very practical and emphasis was put on creativity and the development of new designs to provide solutions. He received his degree in automobile design in 1994.
In 1994 he began his career with the design staff of General Motors. He worked on the Buick Rendezvous and was the lead exterior designer of the Pontiac G6. He also worked on the Astra with General Motors’ Opel Division. With his brilliant work on the design of the Chevrolet Volt, which was unveiled in 2007, Jelani Aliyu is considered by many to be the super star of the General Motors renaissance.

The first black woman and an immigrant to emerge presidential flag bearer of a political party for the forthcoming election in Spain, is a Nigerian.
Helen Mukoro Idisi has made history to become the first woman running for president in Spain. She will be running on the platform of Union De Todos, an opposition party she founded earlier this year 2015.
Helen Mukoro Idisi, Nigerian born Spanish lawyer, criminologist, forensic expert and writer, was born in Delta State and worked briefly in the Governor’s Office before she travelled to Spain in 1992. She gained prominence in Spanish politics, when she founded a political party and later became the first Nigerian-Spanish to contest for the Mayor of Denia in May this year. Although she lost the election, her popularity soared higher as several people endorsed him for the highest office in the land. She is the daughter of Mr. Anthony Mukoro (the late Director General of the Defunct Bendel state Government Treasury’s Cash Office, and Mrs. Mary Mukoro.
She studied Law at the Spanish National University, and holds a Master degree in Criminology. Masters degree in Social Education, a Post Graduate Certificate in Tax and Labor Management, a Post Graduate Certificate in Forensic Psychology, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Immigration and Domestic Violence. Worked as a legal Consultant (immigration department) at the Red Cross Society, Spain. Owner of a legal firm. President at the African Europe Chamber of Commerce. And founder of the party, ‘UNION DE TODOS’, Spain.
She worked at the Ministry of Agriculture, Benin City, Nigeria. Deployed to Governor’s Office (Women Affairs Department) as Agricultural Officer, to help the rural women in Agriculture, and Asaba when Delta State was created.
Speaking on why she decided to go into politics, she said: “I went into politics because; we have to become more involved in decisions that affect us as citizens. And we have an obligation to ensure the legacy we leave to future generations: Politicians, we all are. I saw the need to go into politics as a means to making my explanation of political leadership that suits the interest of the people and I’m ready to listen and care for the needs of constituents.
The 2015 Spanish general election would be held on or before Sunday, December 20, 2015

My friend, my grandfather is actually from this place in Jamaica! It was confirmed by my grandmother a little while ago. I was reading the same article and looked through a lot of related material and noticed that this Bekuta is eerily close to where my grandpas people come from, so I looked up further and asked my grandma and she confirmed! She even described the place to me! She would definitely remember that place as a person who grew up there in the 1930s. Unfortunately, her family immigrated to Jamaica from India and she's the last surviving sibling. My grandpa is late, but she still has a very good memory and can make Yoruba style dishes! She even mixes her Indian styles into the dishes! The best thing is that my daughter's father is from Kwara state, and was quite sick one day and she made him her own version of pepper soup with bitter leafs, and he was so surprised by the taste and contents of the dish that he ate it all and was cured the next day!

ayyoshert:
I read about the Abeokuta part some years back, it is now corrupted to 'bekuta'. It was a settlement established by Enslaved Yoruba of Egba descent who were brought to Jamaica, after their freedom and obviously as they couldn't come back home, they decide to start a community like the one they left. Professor Wole Soyinka having heard of the story was too excited and decided to visit the place, himself an Egba man, he stated in his account how he saw the last surving woman who knew the history of the community. The woman told him of how she missed how people used to live communally, but most of them have passed away, how the people lived in the traditional ways, religion, food etc, the woman mentioned that all the Yoruba foods known were eaten in Bekuta. Unhappily it was said the woman talked about how things have changed, the younger generations have abandoned the older people's ways and most of them have moved away to the big city. I was deeply intrigued with the story.
