Albert Einstein was offered the position of the president of Israel on November 17, 1952, after the death of the Israel’s first president- Chiam Weizmann. The letter detailing the offer was written by Abba Eban on the request of the Israel’s prime minister- Ben Gurion and was delivered by David Gortein, Israel’s ambassador to the United States.

Albert Einstein was asked if he would accept the position of the president of Israel, if it was offered to him by the Knesset- Israel’s equivalent of the parliament. If he accepted the offer, he would be required to move to Israel and take up Israeli citizenship. He would also be given the freedom and facilities to continue with his research works which would even be funded by the government.

Albert Einstein politely declined the offer saying he was of old age and lacked the natural aptitude and needed experience to deal with people and exercise official functions. He also added that he was the most distressed over his inability to accept the offer as his relationship with the Jewish people was his strongest human bond ever, since he was aware of their uncertain and unsecure situation amongst other nations of the world.

Sixty-eight years old Yitzhak Ben-Zvi was later elected by the Knesset to become the president of Israel, sixteen days after the letter detailing the offer was sent to Albert Einstein. Yitzhak Ben-Zvi was inaugurated as the second president of Israel on December 10, 1952 and he served for three terms until his death on April 23, 1963.
