Chemical Pathology

Hmmmm. Of all mistakes I've made in exam halls, I think those i made during Chem path exam makes the peak. You knw those weird days where every step you take is the wrong one? Exactly. I dont knw if it was psychological or just plain weird. I was just making the wrong decisions through out the exam duration. Cleaning and re choosing, it was just so not me. Well even tho i had high hopes fir Chem Path before the exam, i killed. I was expecting a very low score; more like the high/mid 50s. Twas that bad in my mind.

Well, when the results came; twasnt as bad i thought. Got 69.4%. Yeah not as bad.

So what are the lessons learnt:

Well one thing was constant during my Block 1: mistakes. Some were plain weird. Some were of my making. Bottom line is: The mistakes has to be reduced to an insignificant minimum.

Night Reading.

Those who av been following my posts for long would remember my disdain for night reading. Well since my Block 1 exam, I've been making giant strides. I've chosen my caffeinated poison in Coke and chose the hours of 10pm to 3am. Its currently working and am starting to require less poison to stay awake. Lol.

All in all my released results were okay. Could av been better but still okay. All thanks to God and your wishes. Thanks to everyone.

Still expecting Hematology which is my favorite course now. However, I will be deceiving you guys if i told you the exam was easy. It was generally tough and with a -1 negative marking. Crazy right?

Pharmacology was just abnormal. The questions were lifted from God knows where. Nothing related to any textbook or even the lectures. God, one of the worst exams I av done. The whole class was so confused, it became funny. So yes, I hope for my sanity, I dont see the results. Lol.

amen, that 'll b a miracle sir, It jusst dawned on me av not been serious. For instance, I have not revised old physiology topics, in biochemistry: pathways and special topics need thorough attention, even my anatomy, I have abdomen, head and neck to study, neuro to complete, embryology to read and systemic histo to finish. Sir, I am just overwhelmed.

I get the feeling. I was so overwhelmed during my 1st MB especially with Embryology's revision. However, therez no need for panic. Residual knowledge will give you the push across the line. Just ensure you give your best.

So how has my Block 2 been? Well Parasitology has been so time consuming. You know, I never paid any respect to Parasites (that sounds funny). However, the 7 weeks on Parasitology posting has opened my eyes on the medical importance of Parasites. Its way more than just Plasmodium and malaria. I think I am starting to give Parasitologists some respect. But I'm a long way from deciding on specialising in Parasitology. Tufiakwa (apologies to the Parasitologists).

Talking about specialization, this is a topic dear to all medical students. Majority of us have a list of choices for specialization.

I will be sharing mine with you guys. Grab a seat.

Before sharing, let me explain what brouhaha on "specialization" is. After MBBS, medical students like all other students have various options which are of 2 broad classes:

* They could start practising immediately after housemanship. These doctors are called General practitioners or more commonly family doctors; altho this is a wrong term to use; as Family medicine is a post graduate course now. You see these doctors in clinics, private hospitals etc. They are the first contact for the ill and altho they are the butts of jokes as malaria and typhoid doctors; they are very important in the management of majorities' health.

* The other option is post graduate studies. Now, medicine is very rich in opportunities for postgrad studies as tho Medicine and Surgery is wide enough, students are not confined within that. Options include:

- BMS such as in Anatomy and Physiology
- Hematology
- Medical Microbiology
- Chem Path
- Pediatrics
- Obstetrics
- Gynecology
- Virology
- Community medicine
- Histopathology
- Pharmacology
- Psychiatry
- Dermatology
- Medicine
- Surgery

Now each of these specialties has subspecialties; e.g. A surgeon can subspecialise as a Neurosurgeon (brain surgeon); Cardiothoracic surgeon (Heart and lung surgeon), Pediatric surgeon; Plastic surgeon etc.

Also one can sub-subspecialize (funny word); for example popular sugeon Dr. Ben Carson is (was) a Pediatric Neurosurgeon i.e. a brain surgeon for children.

So we can all conclude therez a lot of space for everyone to specialize in.*splendid*

Based on priority; the following are my choices for Specialization.

NEUROSURGERY

Okay; this is more of a dream than reality. Why? Well, because few (really few) teaching hospitals offer this. Neurosurgery is the boss of them all. The Zenith. The oga patapata. The olori oko bam bam. Actually only the best of the best are allowed.

So wetin special for this Neurosurgery na? E special my brother...lol. You learn to operate on pathologies affecting the brain, spinal cord and nerves. If you follow Grey's Anatomy, just picture Derek Shepherd. Head traumas, epilepsy, brain cancer, brain aneurysm, spinal cord injuries; those are your things. Awesomeness (in Kungfu panda's voice).

How many years for the residency? Well, at least 7 years and it could be more

How is the pay? Massive, I heard. Hehehe

How realistic for me? 10%...Hmmm

CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY

First of all, Cardio is bae. How else can you describe getting to hold the heart with ur hands. The heart!!!! Actually, I have a soft spot for the heart. Altho i admit the brain is the CPU of man, i believe the heart is the generator/light source/battery. Tell me how you operate ur computer without the light source? How can the brain work without blood supply (I love analogies, yeaaah).

A Cardiothoracic surgeon learns to operate on pathologies affect the heart, lungs, major blood vessels in the thorax like the aorta etc. Thus gunshot wounds to the chest, Aortic aneurysms, heart transplants, Valvular stenosis are few of specialties of a Cardiothoracic surgeon.

Why is the heart so special? It is because it has a beautiful way of merging simple with complex. It simply has 4 chambers and a complex blood and nerve supply. It is capable of initiating its own rhythm (autorhythmicity). No brain? No problem. The heart functions on its own (beautiful). And to top it all, what beats being the chief distributor of life (blood and Oxygen). Well, nothing.

++ You wanto take a guess on the organ mentioned most in the bible? Its the heart, my people. Takes something special.

How many years for residency? At least 6 years, could be more.

How is pay? Awesome, as i was told.

How realistic for me? Well Neurosurgery is like that lady you knw u like but will take a miracle to get. Like Tiwa Savage, Omotola Jolade etc.. While Cardio is that extremely pretty lady on ur street, u knw is a little bit out of your league but getting her is still realistic. All u need is luck. Get my drift? *smiles*
