“In life, what we hear is 10 percent of what we cannot hear and what we see is ten percent of what we cannot see.”

If a spiritual person comes across the quote above chances are that it may be inferred as the motto of an occult group. However, if a pragmatic person comes across it, chances are that it may pass simply as an aphorism. This means that often times in life, the things we believe are subject to our mind set and the kind of people we interact with. In fact, the bond between us and those we interact with go a long way in shaping our ideas and beliefs on a particular subject or a person of distant affiliation.

For example, if a religious cleric, for some reason, terms a public figure sordid, there is the probability that seventy percent of that congregation will believe it without even having as much as a minute talk with the person in question. An untarnished reputation has been sullied. More terrible it is if the person is not aware of this accusation early enough to refute it. Meanwhile, friends and relatives of the accused will find the allegation unthinkable, unbelievable and unreasonable. In the end there will exist a clash of perceptions and ultimately, opinions.
The mind is a powerful tool that grabs what it hears with a magnetic force and just like every weakness lays in its strength, the weakness of the mind is that it is greatly shaped by what it hears. Consequently, fifty percent of the times, the eyes see what the mind hears and not what actually exists.

For this reason, many avoidable conflicts and killings have taken place just because someone out of misinterpretation, stereotypical thought pattern or assumption conveyed an unfounded opinion to gullible minds. Painfully, many tribal massacres and wanton killings have originated through this medium. To mention a few, a good example of such mindless killing is that of four students in Aluu, a village in Rivers state, Nigeria. All that was needed for those students to be saved was for those who witnessed the killings to consider perspectives other than that which they had heard but that was not the case as many of them left their homes with their minds already made. They were going to witness the public executions of thieves and not alleged thieves, so no questions were raised when they got to the scene, no iota of doubt was evident; the boys were naked, only thieves are stripped naked, and therefore, they must truly be thieves.

On the fifth of October 2015, it would be three years since these undergraduates of university of Port-Harcourt were killed. Boys who each belonged to the departments of Theatre Arts, Geology and Civil engineering respectively, with the last one of them running a diploma course in Technology. Boys who could someday have what it takes to contribute to the growth of Nigeria.

As we bear this date in mind let us remember that, in as much as we would like to consider the views of friends, relatives, the community and the media, truth is, for us to truly function as humans, particularly in a country like Nigeria where over two hundred tribes exist, there is a need for us to form our own perception on issues and always remember that opinions are not facts because gone are the days when there were no smokes without fire; to put aptly, these are the days when people start fires just because they want you to see some smoke.

Overcoming jealousy

Overcoming jealousy begins with awareness. Jealousy and anger are emotional reactions to believing scenarios in your mind which allows you to see that the projected stories in your mind are not true.

@theunusualmoon, good post up there, we should be constantly reminded that extra-judicial killings is prohibited in our society.

A brother of mine was leached in school by area boys. On a false alarm of "thief", they almost killed him, somehow these things still happens in our society, people no longer know what their duties in their communities is, they have asumed the role of the executioner, funny is that the people who perpetuate this crimes are usually touts and unusualy kind of people with no life.
What kind of a married man administers justice to a woman by administering perper in her vagisss before beating her to death? And funny, the market women leader perceived them to be right

Let's just keep talking about it bro. It's the only way we can get rid of jungle justice.
Glad to hear your brother wasn't taken completely.
The most disappointing part is many of these perpetuators get away with the crime. In fact,we hardly sue people in this country let alone mete out the right punishments.

People have lost faith in the justice system, hence jungle justice. Most who are guilty of this have nothing going on for them.
Sadly that is our world for now.

What do you see?

Our minds play tricks on us. Our perception is unreliable and so are our opinions.
