The Imo State leadership of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria(JUSUN) has declared an indefinite industrial action, leading to the closure of all courts in the State. This decision is sequel to what the JUSUN leadership called "the apparent unwillingness of Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, to comply with the ruling of the Federal High Court judgment on the financial autonomy of the judiciary”.
The industrial action is especially exciting considering that the Governor had earlier in the year given car gifts to magistrates in the State, which was seen by some analysts as a way of averting any face-off with the judiciary workers. With the ongoing strike, it has become obvious that the Union is only interested in getting their rights, and nothing else.
Also protesting are House of Assembly workers who are acting under the umbrella union of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), who are allegedly being owed five months arrears of salaries by the State Government, even after the arrival of bailout funds released by the Federal Government to enable the State clear off its backlog of salaries.
A harmonious relationship between the labour and government is necessary to drive development as a satisfied workforce will be adequately motivated for extensive productivity. Our Governor should pay attention to the complaints of these workers, as they are invaluable assets to his 'FACTORY, FACTORY, FACTORY, JOB, JOB, JOB' vision.
