Abobaku aka revisionist, Igbos pioneered nollywood movies (living in bondage)
jaymichael:
You this osu cave dweller. Was it soap operas we paid money to go see at National theater in those days? Truth is National theater died when Yorubas stopped producing cinema films due to the proliferation of VHS machines. Those films were very expensive to produce and their quality is at par with any in Europe and America. They were exported and screened abroad. Your people entered the industry when e don turn pure water. Churning out tasteless low quality wacky waka pass Part 1-99 films shot and produced in less than 2 hours. Ola Balogun and Hubert Ogunde pioneered movie production in Nigeria. Yorubas have been doing films in Yoruba Language in Celluloid cinema, tv and VHS before you charlatans entered the scene and spoiled the industry.

And how many people were watching those movies apart from elite people Western Nigeria? You all can huff and puff,it doesn't change the history of nollywood. When the world wants to celebrate nollywood, they know the pioneers that deserve the praise and honour.
You can check documentries by international media houses, they have already covered the history of nollywood.

When people say trash on the net we will get emotional.
How can somebody say nollywood made olu jacob popular . Where was that boy when olu jacob acted in Cl5 an american detective serie in USA.
You can say an igbo coin the worlD nollywood but yoruba has been acting cinema and showing them to people in europe as far back as early 70s .
Igbo guys on nairaland should stop getting tribalise on educative discusion.

That only depicted why jamb will settle for 180 over 400 as cut off. I score 286 to get second batch admission to accounting in O A U.
As difficult as it sounds, the popularity of Olu Jacobs in this generation as far as movies are concerned has to do with his roles in nollywood usually in an Igbo garb. How many people have watched those movies you mentioned? Even Olu knows that his success is tied to nollywood. Those veteran actors that couldn't cross over to nollywood remained in oblivion.

Maybe you were still young then or you weren't born then or you haven't been to Lagos then. These were the movies people see in Lagos which is the capital then. Do you expect the Yorubas to produce Igbo films for the consumption of Umuleri and Aguleri folks?

Are you lots only being stupid or do you mean to annoy people with common sense.
we all know the difference between soap opera, cinema and home video. cinema and soap opera predates nollywood. both Igbos and yolobas started cinema and soaps before nollywood which was heralded by "living in bondage"
Before living in bondage there was ichoku, village headmaster, things fall apart, zebrudaya etc many actor of nollywood like nkem owoh pete edochie, pete eneh, fabian adibe, sam loco efe, justus esiri etc featured in things fall apar,t yet it is not considered part of nollywood because it was not on VHS

Yolobas only acted stage performances and later soapopera. Therfore Igbo founded and "owns" nollywood. even at that Igbos have more popular tv series and soaps. Dont get too emotional about it.

winniz:

The only people misinforming people here are you Yorubas desperately trying to rewrite history. Yorubas only did stage plays and Dramas not Cinema movies.

Its either you don't understand what I wrote in the post you quoted or you didn't follow the post I commented on. I am not interested in comparing 'dicks' as that won't serve any purpose, I only tried to correct the perception that there was nothing like cinema in Nigeria prior to the advent of Nollywood. Whether it was begun by Yorubas or the Kanuris doesn't really matter to me. That's not going to put food on anyone's table.

Here's the later part of my post which maybe in your rush to call me and a whole tribe of people 'stupid' you didn't read (though I fail to see why you should resort to abuse over some random online argument).

Sometimes, it's nice to put the ethnic thing aside and discuss issues objectively. As an example, why do you think they named a popular area of Agege in Lagos Pen Cinema?

Here are excerpts about the Pen Cinema in the Agege area in Lagos. This is to show you cinemas existed in Lagos, and by extension Nigeria, long before Nollywood came into being. The links are provided so you can peruse the full material at your leisure.

...Onishowo Cinema has become a school where the old seating has been arranged into five classes under one roof. The balcony, where big screen TVs have been rolled in, still serves as a viewing center of 30-40 seats. On the other side of Lagos in Agege one will find Pen Cinema, converted now to a fast food restaurant, and Danjuma Cinema, the only facility I visited that still operates as a cinema.
http://findingnollywood.com/2013/04/11/unearthing-cinema-halls-in-lagos/

Cinemas have also become something in the form of a monument; an important reference point in the society. For example, a popular area in Agege has been named after the famous Pen Cinema that was formerly situated in that area. Similarly, Casino Cinema Yaba, is very popular and synonymous with the bus stop named after it in the Yaba area of Lagos.
http://pakacademicsearch.com/pdf-files/art/445/1-10%20Vol%203,%20No%201%20%282012%29.pdf

Once again, my intention is not to compare achievement of any tribe or tribes, rather, I want to correct the wrong perception that there was no cinema in Nigeria showing Nigerian made films before Nollywood came into existence.

It is my personal belief that Nollywood or the entire Motion picture industry in Nigeria cannot be the achievement of any one tribe. It is rather a collective effort. Though it may all have begun through the personal efforts of individuals who may have come from particular tribes, Nollywood was not and is not created by only Igbos or only Yorubas and neither should it be. So stop comparing dicks already!

P.S: Please if you are going to respond to this post with a tribal slur or with tribal sentiments please don't bother. I'm going to ignore you.

People keep saying cinema ...cinemas as of then were showing foriegn movies and that can't be an industry because it is just a business sector entertainment but what is an industry is when we have indigent players in it churning out movies after movies ...yes we had Hubert ogunde then we had innocent ohiri then ..those people where making films though wishy washy just for the love of it not profit oriented

The real Nollywood started when NEK produced the movie LIVING IN BONDAGE

let us say the truth once in a while

If pre 92 films are not nollywood? what are they? Hollywood? Bollywood or Ghollywood? Living in bondage was produced in Igbo language, so was Yoruba films produced before it. You don't even have a single film on celluloid and cinema, we have produced tons both on cinema and VHS many years before you guys even ventured. We started the film business in all ramifications 30 years before the Igbos even conceptualized it. How many Igbo language films do you guys even have? It can be counted by the fingers.

No matter how much Yoruba people try to twist history, the truth keeps staring them in the face. Nollywood is an Igbo creation and will continue to be dominated by Ndi Igbo. Funny enough, Nollywood, celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2013, which was well attended by the who is who in Nollywood, including some of your Yoruba people. Even the foreigners that watch Nollywood movies, only know about the Igbo culture portrayed in our movies. Most even know some Igbo words and phrases. What does that tell you? It simply means Nollywood is synonymous with Ndi Igbo culture. For your information, Ndi Igbo will never allow you people to rewrite Nollywood history k. I simply can't understand why yorubas keep attaching themselves to Nollywood, instead of forming their own industry like the Hausa people have done. We have Nollywood (dominated by Ndi Igbo) and we have Kannywood (dominated by Hausa). Yoruba people should champion their own Yoriwood, bikonu!

That's the point right there. All tribes made movies pre 1992, but Living in bondage kick started the industry we now know today as Nollywood. Even one of the Yoruba peeps on here, mistakenly confessed that Ndi Igbo coined the name Nollywood. So if it was a yoruba creation, would Ndi Igbo have had that opportunity, to name an industry supposedly started by the yorubas? Biko, kwuo nu eziokwu, maka na eziokwu bu ndu.

Guy, you should be ashamed of yourself for repeatedly making this ignorant assertion of yours in this day of the internet and google. That you all were living in caves or still recovering from Biafra war during the period of the 70s and 80s and therefore couldn't afford to enjoy the recreational privileges of Cinema-going doesn't mean the rest of us also did same. Yorubas were watching Yoruba Cinema while the Nigerian army was using Biafrans as target practice. i guess that explains your ignorance. The following movies were shot on Celluloid for the Cinema audiences by Yorubas in the 70s and 80s. Thank me later:

Taxi Driver (Ade Love)
Omo Orukan (Oga Bello)
Orun Mooru (Baba Sala)
Kana Kana
Jaiyesimi (Hubert Ogunde)
Ireke Onibudo
Aiye (Hubert Ogunde)
Aropin Ntenia, etc

So,those first century movies of yours created Nollywood?Lol! Yorubas and hypocrisy.Exept nollywood is not Nigeria's only movie industry. If it is,not only did the Igbos create it,they also own it.

Just say you ignorant folks know Olu Jacobs when you started your waka pass "fast food" movies. Olu Jacobs, Joke Sylvia, Ajayi lycett Were A list acts that have been popular way before your 2 hours production movies. Many Yoruba actors read theatre acts and started with stage plays. You have professors PHD holders, lecturers among them. Some did not even bother to cross over to those your waka pass movies, they found fame and fortune doing Yoruba movies and they are still doing purely Yoruba films till today. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, there are some names that I was used to, some are active in the industry till date.
The argument wasn't about who started what movies in Nigeria, the thread was initially about non Yoruba acts that have been well assimilated in the industry that you would be surprised that they are not yorubas (some names came to me as a surprise). It was your folks (who are so full of inferiority complex) that derailed the thread with their hallucinations and delusions that they started the movie industry in Nigeria.
