The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Uche Secondus, on behalf of the National Executive Committee and the PDP family nationwide mourns the death of former Governor of Bayelsa state, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Sunday said the party is still in shock over the news of the sudden death of the former governor, describing the development as deeply saddening.
“The PDP mourns the demise of this great Nigerian, who made immense contributions and sacrifices towards the unity, stability and development of his state and our dear nation both as a military officer and a politician.
“Chief Alamieyeseigha was a true democrat; humble leader, brilliant administrator who had extraordinary love for his people. He was an outstanding party-man, who, despite his travails, remained loyal to the PDP at state and national levels to the very end
“The PDP sincerely commiserates with Governor Seriake Dickson, the Alamieyeseigha family, the Ijaw kingdom and the people of Bayelsa state and pray God to give them the fortitude to bear this great loss.

Uche Secondus, Olisa Metuh and the PDP have the inalienable right to mourn the departed DSP Alamieyesiagha. May the Lord comfort those that he left behind. However I take exception to the tag of 'a great Nigerian' posted in his memory. Great Nigerians don't steal their own people's money, no matter how diligent and committed they might be in service. Great Nigerians don't get jailed for defrauding their own people. Great Nigerians don't run away from justice, they face the law to prove their innocence. DSP Alamieyesiagha was guilty of all these. May his soul find rest. But he was not a Great Nigerian. We may mourn the dead, but let us not worship evil. The evil that men do lives after them. DSP Alamieyesiagha will for ever be remembered for the legacy he left behind. For good or for evil. Again, may his soul find rest.

May his soul rest in perfect peace. But painting him as a great Nigerian is tantamount to treason. The penalty for that is death.

Indeed he was a '‘great Nigerian’! We all have our definition of greatness, a man who misappropriated the funds he was entrusted with to use to provide infrastructure which would improve the quality of life of his own people but prefers it for personal use can also qualify as a great man in the minds of some humans!
