Gud mornin people, I recently purchased a used camry spreadlight. Mechanic did the inspection and gave a feedback of sound engine(water as end product) and sound gear box. I made payment as I tot doz were d major consideratns in a used car. Jus wen I tot it's tym for a friend to drive it down to my location, I got a shocker. So far av spent close to 60k for some issues dat bother on engine servicing(since d car has been parked for a while)n wheel alignment and balancing, some equipment like jack, caution sign, fire extnguisher, etc. Now I jus got anoda alert dat the two back shock absorbers must be changed. Hmmm!!! Am tired o.

But are diz normal of a typical naija used cars? Or hav I bought d wrong car? I need ur responses pls

Every used car always has a hidden fault. It is left for the new owner to restore the car. That is why i will never consider chucky234 case a scam.

So which car would he have bought? Let me guess, a Ford fusion? Or maybe a camaro or an impala? Even Americans run from those cars.

I like the way you think a Camaro would have been perfect.

The man bought a car and he is having doubt before even driving it how much worse can things get?

Since there is almost no alternative in Nigeria is is Toyota or Honda at the price you get them.

Op find you a good mechanic and 'enjoy' your car

U never spend anything, even if u bought d car as toks u will spend at least 100k to put it on the road

Well for naija used with sound engine n transmission likely changes are

4 shock absorbers
4 tires
Battery
Stabilizer linkage
Tie rods
Brake pads
Brake linning
Engine oil n oil filter
Brake disc
Balancing and alignment
Bearing
Driving shaft
Fan belt
Transmission oil change n filter
Bolt joints
Over haul of ac BC there is usually a leak in d system but seller will top gas to fool u lol
And many more

Our road is very bad soo cars used in naija for one or two yrs will have all these parts worn. U only enjoy if these repairs n service were carried out not too long before you bought the car.

Set aside abt 150k for repairs n services when buying a naija used car. The good news is dt u will nt change all parts at once but within a year of purchase depending on hw the previous owner treated the car.

Three major things u buy in a naija used car are super sound factory fitted engine, super sound transmission and non accidented body (at least not a major accident to affect car shape BC minor scratches go dey no thanks to keke n bus driver). Other things can easily b fixed provided d deal is good. If u overpaid to purchase then u r on ur own

1. DON'T EVER USE YOUR MECHANIC FOR AUTO INSPECTION - - REASON BEING YOUR MECHANIC WANTS YOU TO BUY A BAD CAR. IF YOU BUY A GOOD CAR, NO WORK FOR HIM = NO MONEY FOR HIM.

2. WHEN BUYING A NAIJA USED USED CAR EXPECT TO CHANGE THE SHOCKS MAY ALL THE LEGS.

3. HAVE IT SCANNED TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO MAJOR FAULTS . I.E KNOCK SENSOR, MISSING CATALYST CONVERTER, TRANSMISSION... ETC.

4. TAKE IT TO AUTOMEDIC IN ALAUSA IKEJA AND HAVE A HARDWARE INSPECTION OR ANY MOBIL FILLING STATION WITH A SERVICE CENTER (AWAY FROM YOUR MECHANIC) TO LOOK UNDERNEATH THE CAR.

YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELF TO BLAME IF YOU DONT DO YOUR HOME WORK.

Chucky chucky, why u want bring this issue again? I never called u a scammer, u can go back and read all my comments. Anyone expecting to buy a naija used car is expecred to know he will spend some money to put the car in the state he wants it to be. What might be an issue to the new buyer might not be an issue to the old owner (seller). For example, the car might have a defective side mirror and the old owner doesn't see it as an issue, however the new owner might see it as an issue. That is why it is good to inspect a car physically before payment.

However if the buyer is not around to inspect the car, then the seller should at least state most of the problems the car has before taking payment.

He should buy what he can afford. By the way, toyotas' are overpriced.
In america, the situation is the way it is here. The average or poor buy normal cars while most rich people go for exotic cars.
Re: Am I Spending Too Much On My New Car? by Originalsly: 1:55pm On Oct 16, 2015
@op...yes....engine and transmission are the two major considerations...but there are other thi gs to consider. I wanted to blame the mechanic....but then it seems that you you wanted feedback on engine and transmission only....and that's what you got. Like someone said earlier....if you are buying a used car you would have to spend to get it in good condition... more on a Naija used. You said the car was sitting for a while....then you should take it to a good mechanic shop to change fluids and really have it checked out before driving around.... it can lead to complications. The gurus can explain. .... I just know some headlines.... not much details.

Nice thread. My hubby is paying for a registerd 2000 toyota sienna on monday. That'll be the first registered car he'll be buying, i'll jot the above mentioned repairs down for him. Btw, is sienna a friendly family bus in terms of maintenance? The potential owner uses a corolla sport that only requires routine servicing and fuelling, rarely develops fault.
