37. Mining doesn't make poor countries rich.

Nations where the most mining takes place are also some of the poorest countries in the world. In these countries, national governments are helping mining companies to get the minerals they want. The small amount of money that poor countries get from mining companies is taken by international banks, not local people. Fourteen Majority World countries get at least a third of their export revenues from minerals. Their external debts are 1.4 times greater than their Gross National Product (GNP).

38. Mining is one of the most dangerous and deadliest jobs on earth.

Mining kills and injures more workers than any other industry. For example:

* The USA: From January to October 1999, 45mine workers died because of workplace accidents.

* South Africa: One worker dies and 12 are seriously injured for every ton of gold produced.

* China: 3,362 people died as a result of accidents in coal mines in 1996.

* World-wide: Uranium mining has caused 20,000 deaths since the 1950s. Uranium mining has exposed more workers to radiation than any other industry.

* Diamonds can only be scratched by other diamonds.

* Around 50% of all natural diamonds originate from Africa.

* Diamond rings are the most popular form of diamond jewelry.

* The world's largest diamond consumer is United States.

* The world's fastest growing diamond market is China.

* Not all diamonds found on our planet originate from our planet as some have come to our planet with meteorites.

10 billion tons of gold sits underneath the sea bed, it is destined to sit here however as there is no way to access it.

14. One of the World's most amazing mining equipments.

BelAZ 75710.

The BelAZ 75710 is an ultra-class haul truck by Belarusian manufacturer BelAZ. At 500 short tons, it is the world's largest, highest payload capacity haul truck Design.bThe BelAz 75710 has a conventional two-axle setup, but with dualled wheels (like a scaled-up International Payhauler 350), hence it needs eight 59/80 R63 tyres. Unusually, it has four-wheel drive and four-wheel hydraulic steering. The turning radius is claimed to be 20 metres. The 75710 can carry a 450 tonne (500 short tons) load. The empty weight is 360 tonnes much more heavily built than the previous model, which was 240 tonnes. It is 20.6 metres long, 8.16 metres high, and 9.87 metres wide. The bed is relatively shallow, limiting the volume of material that can be carried. Instead of a single engine, the Siemens MMT 500 drive system (with AC/AC diesel-electric transmission based on the ELFA inverters) is powered by two 65-litre 16-cylinder diesel engines, each with 2300 horsepower. 2 engines working together give a power of 4,600 hp. This, in addition to the shallow bed, dualled tyres, and very heavy empty weight, has led to concerns about operating efficiency. Fuel consumption (according to company data) is 198 g/kWh per engine, with option to run on only one if carrying less than capacity loads. Maximum speed is 64 km/h, and economy maximum speed (when fully loaded and on a 10% gradient) is 40 km/h.

43. For starters, did you know that 94 percent of life on Earth is aquatic? That makes us land-dwellers a very small minority.

44. About 70 percent of the planet is ocean, with an average depth of more than 12,400 feet. Given that photons (light) can’t penetrate more than 330 feet below the water’s surface, most of our planet is in a perpetual state of darkness.

46. . We have only explored less than 5 percent of the Earth’s oceans. In fact, we have better maps of Mars than we do of the ocean floor.

36. The world’s largest stockpile of gold can be found five stories underground inside the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s vault and it holds 25% of the world's gold reserve (540,000 gold bars). While it contains more gold than Fort Knox, most of it belongs to foreign governments.

Pictures below:

The Bank of England's vault under central London contains 4,600 tons of the precious metal, worth an incredible £156billion.
The rows of simple shelves are stacked high with 28lb 24-carat gold bars.

47. Much of the life in the oceans, as on land, is invisible to the naked eye. For instance, if you’ve ever swallowed a milliliter of ocean water, know that you also gulped 1 million bacteria and 10 million viruses give or take a few. No need to worry though, swimmers around the world swallow some ocean water during their ventures into the water, without ill effects.

Comparing the amount of gold ever explored in the history of mankind with the hidden amount of gold beneath the sea bed,l/earth is like taking a spade full of sand from a beach.
