The symptoms described are indicative of worn valve stem seals, though the oil consumption rate gives me the feeling oil is being burnt elsewhere. Either way, an engine strip down will be required.

Left to me, if this car was mine, or a clients, I would rebuild as required. With a Nigerian mechanic in Nigeria, I'm not so sure. There are reasons engine rebuilds are unsuccessful in Nigeria.

Piston ring replacement: it's not just slapping on a set of rings. The bores need to be measured for wear, and if there are any deep score marks, or the walls are significantly worn, an over bore will be required. This will require oversize pistons and rings. How many Nigerian mechanics check the cylinder bores, and compare to spec? How many even know what the factory limits are? Or even know how to set the piston ring gap? Torque wrench settings?

Valve stem seals: Again, there's more to simply throwing a set on. The valve guides themselves MUST be checked. If they are excessively worn, the valve stems will be a loose fit, and will "rock" in service. This will destroy a brand new set of valve stem seals within a single 30 mile trip. Worn valve guides MUST be replaced, and it's not a job to do at home with a big hammer and chisel either. Very specialist.

Then consider your mechanic may not get the timing right, you know what'll happen when your valves and pistons make contact at high rpm.

With all the above variables, hopefully you may be able to make a more informed choice, and go with a replacement motor.

Good luck!

Thanks u sir for the contributions. I will settle for a new engine.

Mr Siena
Pls i need your opinion....you may recall we have had discussions in the past on oil shortage in my 07 MT honda accord. Anyway, i have chosen to live with it by topping the oil as required as it hasn't disturbed my engine performance.
However, i topped up yesterday b4 travelling to ibadan but couldnt gauge the level well, because it was raining heavily. When i got to ibadan, i forgot to check the level after engine cooled, but i topped up with another 400ml b4 setting back to lagos. Unfortunately, at about guru maharaji, i noticed the car was not revving beyond 3ooo revs...and couldnt go beyond 90km/hr. So i stopped at ogere and attempted to loosen the engine oil pan nut to let out some oil. This did not go well and i ended up draining almost everything. Fortunately i was able to find oil nearby and top up...couldnt wait too long for engine to cool, so as not to be caught out in the dark, all this took about 1hour. We got back on the way and the car worked fine till we got to lkagos on 3MB and it started acting funny again.

It was not going beyond 3ooo revs and couldnt speed beyond 90km/hr.

My neighbour thinks my plugs are worn...What do you think?

Could it be excess oil, worn out plugs? or ...??
