Morocco is building the world most concentrated solar power plan,when completed will be capable of powering one million home in the country.
According to the Telegraph …Morocco will host the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant at the edge of the Sahara desert, to help generate renewable electricity which will power nearly half of the country by 2020.
The first phase of the project, a 160 MW power plant called Noor 1, will be completed next month.
The $9 billion Noor project is located outside the city of Ouarzazate on a stretch of land roughly the same size as Rabat, Morocco’s capital city. “We are not an oil producer. We import 94 percent of our energy as fossil fuels from abroad and that has big consequences for our state budget,” Morocco’s environment minister, Hakima el-Haite, told the Guardian. Additionally, Noor 1 alone is expected to reduce the country’s greenhouse emissions by up to a quarter million tons a year over 25 years. And, when Noor 2 and 3 come online in 2017, both of which can store solar energy for up to 8 hours, the entire Sahara region will have access to uninterrupted solar-generated electricity 24/7.

This is something that Nigeria should really be focusing on.

Our location and climate ensures that we get huge quantities of sunlight all year round.

We have huge amounts of available land in the north that was generate a lot of solar energy for our grid. We can build many solar farms generating electricity via different methods like solar panels and SCP.

A government body should be setup to handle this, especially as the price of solar panels keeps dropping.

But nooooo..our selfishness and short-sightedness keep us focusing on oil & gas.
