THE Brazilian government yesterday conferred a Naval Merit Order award on the former Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Ganiyu Adekeye.

Presenting the award to Adekeye in Abuja, the Ambassador of Brazil to Nigeria, Ana Candida Perez, said it was in response to the "outstanding services" rendered the Brazilian Navy by the retired naval officer.

Part of the services includes the invitation extended to the Brazilian Navy in 2006 for the Nigerian Navy's golden jubilee. A Brazilian Oceanographic ship actively participated.

In September 2007, Adekeye, along with two Nigerian Navy warships, including the nation's flagship - NNS ARADU - participated in the bi-centenary of the Brazilian Navy at Tamandare in Rio de Janeiro.

Perez said: "The Naval Merit Order Award is intended to honour naval military personnel who have distinguished themselves in the performance of their duties exceptionally; to reward military establishments and civil institutions, Brazilians or foreigners, their flags or banners, as well as civilians and military persons, Brazilians or foreigners who have rendered outstanding services to the Brazilian Navy."

Adekeye expressed joy at the award, noting that "this is a very rare award because I was serving Nigeria as a servant. But for another country to give me an award, I am excited and feel fulfilled."

He said the participation of the two Nigerian Navy warships "was not a reaction to any event but a conscious programme because if we had not gone to Brazil, we would have gone elsewhere. All we wanted to do was to extend the leg of the Nigerian Navy."
