The Late Emir of Borgu, SEN. (Dr.) ALH. Haliru Dantoro Kitoro III was a man of integrity who lived his everyday life trying to work in the service and benefit of humanity.
He would be greatly missed and remembered for his uprightness, honesty and steadfastness. Indeed, the late Emir was a man of character and progressive political orientation who was described sometimes ago by APC Chieftain Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a Pan-Nigerian.
Late Haliru Dantoro Kitoro III was a nobleman, an administrator, a politician and a statesman per excellence who had a rewarding career in the public service and politics. He was a former incorruptible minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who did not own a House in the nation’s capital and was also a Senator of the Federal Republic amongst many others before he ascended the throne on November 26, 2005, when he succeeded Isiaku Musa Jikantoro.
Born in 1938, the Late Emir was the 3rd and last child of his parents. As a leader and father of the people, he brought inspiring positive change to the Borgu Kingdom. Nigeria in general but Niger State in particular, has lost a courageous Royal Father who stood by truth against all odds.
The Late Emir attended Elementary School at Old Bussa from 1945-1949; and proceeded to Pakata Elementary School, Ilorin (1950) and Baboko Senior Primary School, Ilorin (1950-1953). While in the primary school in Ilorin, little Dantoro lived in the Zango area of Ilorin and covered the 9-mile distance each school day for four years. From 1953 to 1955 he was at the Ilorin Middle School (now Government Secondary School), Ilorin, Kwara State.
On completion of secondary education he opted to study administration at the Institute of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria. He studied three programmes from 1957-1958, 1959-1961 and 1969-1970. In the course of his later life he attended a quite number of professional and policy related courses within and outside the country.
Dantoro later served for ninety days as minister, FCT in 1983 under President Shehu Shagari led National Party of Nigeria (NPN) Federal Government; went to prison after the December 31, 1983 military coup that ended the second Republic. After the coup of 27th August 1985, he regained his freedom and was elected Distinguished Senator for Zone C comprising Borgu and Kontagora in 1992 on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC).
It was during the short-lived Third Republic Senate that he met with and became friends with the Asiwaju of Lagos, then Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu who was elected on the platform of the rival political party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
He, however, had a brief stint with the late General Sani Abacha’s military government before he finally drew curtains on his political adventure. He served as the Deputy National Chairman of the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN). The erstwhile governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili was the National Secretary of the party. Saleh Hassan was the National Chairman, while the late Lamidi Adedibu was the National Vice Chairman (South West).
The Late Royal Father, who was recently decorated as Life Patron by the Association of Tourism Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria (ATBOWATAN), died at a German Hospital after a brief illness.
