After years of prospecting for oil in the Chad Basin, Nigeria is “inching closer” to a breakthrough, according to Ibe Kachikwu. The group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said the country may well be on the verge of a significant oil find in the Lake Chad area in the north-east based on analysis of recent seismic 3D data generated from the basin.

Preliminary surveys had indicated that there is hydrocarbon deposit in an area covering 3,350 square metres in the Chad Basin, with federal government pumping close to N30bn in the last three years into feasibility studies of the oil potential there.

Countries such as Chad, Niger and Sudan with similar structural settings are already exploring or producing oil on their own soil, leading to conclusions that it is a matter of time for Nigeria’s turn. In a presentation to the Petroleum Club, Lagos, over the weekend, titled “Ongoing Reforms in the Oil Industry: Impact of NNPC Reforms on the Nigerian Economy”, Kachikwu said the corporation is injecting a lot of energy into the effort to ensure success in this regard.

“There are signs from the latest 3D seismic studies that oil may well be very close to being found now in Lake Chad after very many years of trials. I think that this is very key,” he said, according to a statement by Ohi Alegbe, the corporation’s spokesman. “It is key both for the geographical balancing of oil production and it is also very key for the purpose of refinery placement in the North in terms of access to crude. I am optimistic that by the end of the year we should be able to announce something major on this.”

Kachikwu identified “key areas of urgent intervention” needed to drive and develop Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

These are: running production acreages with transparent and profitable partnerships to bridge capacity and funding gaps; encouraging investment inflow into to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry; and engaging with local communities. He also listed as “key” the need to drive regulation to develop the sector income via encouraging the fast-tracking of the petroleum industry bill (PIB) to clarify direction and encourage long-term investment in the industry.

Kachikwu stated that the NNPC is projecting the inflow of $20bn in 2016 to enable the corporation fund major projects and improve its bottom line going forward. He described 2016 as a crucial year for the NNPC as it is expected to transit from historic loss environment to profit making domain.

There is no exploration going on anywhere in Nigeria for now.

Are they using satellite for the exploration?

There is Oil all over Nigeria - its just a matter of time. Calling some region parasite, is just mere insecurity. No one is better than anyone. No region is more blessed. We just need to stop seeing ourselves as IPOB or ODUA or Arewa and the sky is our limit.

Yes that's true. I heard that the geographical climate and soil texture in chad basin is good for growing palm tree. Kudos Mr Kachukwu. Lolzz #Backtothetopic.

Oil in Basin? Wtf!! I now believe that God really wants to divide Nigeria. Well this would be a much balance to our system and reduce over dependence on southern oil but I know that some midgets won't be happy about this news

This remains an exercise in futility, surely there is likely to be oil in the Chad Basin as is typical of most sedimentary basins but it is very unlikely to be a commercial find more so in this current low oil price regime.
Also no major MNOC or even indigenous producer is willing to take the risk of producing from reservoirs in what is now primarily Boko Haram territory, the future of the industry is in large offshore fields like Total's Egina or Shell's Aparo, already a quarter of Nigeria's current production comes from two large offshore fields alone Agbami and Bonga.
The NNPC is wasting it's time pursuing a pipe dream out of a desire to be politically correct and to assuage northern leaders.
All NNPC GMDs keep promising that since time immemorial yet no commercial find till date.

The only time nuclear weapon was put to use was when the US was the only one that have it. Now they have lost that monopoly, so the world isn't expecting nuclear attack anytime soon cos america is aware of its availability in many parts of the world.
What am I saying? By the time we discover oil in all parts of Nigeria, we wont have parasites again. Agricultural produce would hold sway and then, we shall know who are the real parasites.

The Chad basin has been a rich source of oil for contingent nations,so this is no surprise.
But hope this wudnt be another curse because the north has been a good agricultural basket of the nation too.

We might even find out at the end of the day that all the regions have crude oil in Nigeria. It's just an additional blessing in North, cos agriculture is key in that region.

Kachikwu should shut the f up.. What has oil find done to Nigeria? Brought about divisiveness, kidnapping, chronic corruption in astronomical levels!

Agricultural find should be of the importance at the moment! Not some curse oil shittt!!

Conclusion:

This is just some sort of trick to have some $$ budgeted for stomach infrastructure affair!!
Re: Nigeria Closer To Oil Find In Chad Basin – Kachikwu by Sweetguy25: 7:07pm On Nov 08, 2015
The problem is not whether there is oil but at what quantity?

Another question is why is the federal government spending billions of Naira in prospecting oil?
