A teacher earning N50 then was like a king. Money wasn't easy to come by. It was roughly equivalent to Pound Sterling in value.

Back in 1977, our economy was riding high on high crude oil prices. As a result, dollars were flowing in, and we had foreign currency to buffer the naira. We also were still exporting lots of agric products as well...bringing in more dollars.

Of course....when the bottom fell out in 1982....ie oil prices crashed....we went back to square one...and the naira began its decline.

Yet some pple are still calling for further devaluation of our currency, our naira had really suffered, even though we change our currency to pounds it is still same thing, they will differentiate as Nigeria pounds n British pounds, the answer is, we have to be a producing economy not consuming economy, export more n import less so that we can hv favorable balance of trade at d intl mkt .
