1. ANAMCO Mercedes truck and bus assembly plant in Enugu survived the many years of rudderless military and civilian governments. It kept producing luxurious buses and trucks which many transport companies patronised occasionally. VON in Lagos managed then by the economic theorist Prof Pat Utomi collapsed. See first picture.

2. PAN in Kaduna also chugged on producing mostly producing salon cars like 206 and 406. Occasionally the police and army bought 406 for their senior officers. But now police officers have developed thirst for bullet proof BMWs.

3. Steyr in Bauchi struggled to survive. It was set up by British Leyland, and they made solid and good quality trucks. I think they eventually closed shop. It was probably privatized. Someone who knows better can update us. They made strong trucks and the military (army and police) occasionally patronised them. But mostly, corrupt Army Chief of Staff and IG of police preferred to import low quality Tata trucks from India so they can chop egunje

4. Goodluck Jonathan's government came up with the laudable National Automative Policy encouraging large vehicle manufacturing companies to set up shop in Nigeria, and also encouraging local entrepreneurs to venture into vehicle manufacturing. Nissan answered the clarion call, and refurbished the old VON factory in Lagos, re-tooled the plant, installed machines, trained skilled labour and started production.
Jonathan commissioned the new plant and test drove the first Nissan SUV in 2014.

5 A Nigerian businessman, Innocent Chukwuma set up Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing company at Nnewi and started assembling Innoson buses, trucks and SUVs.

Nigerian state and Federal governments, ministries, banks, oil companies never patronised them. They keep importing from Europe, Japan, Korea and shamefully, even from India.

What is really wrong with us as a people. We keep importing what we have in abundance (petrol, diesel, kerosine), whilst exporting what we don't (gas to Ghana, electricity to Chad and Niger; medical doctor, engineers to Europe, America and Saudi Arabia).

How can Nigeria ever hope to become industrialise if we keep doing all the wrong things

That is why nigeria is called a zoo, we have a very useless govt. A govt that create fuel scarcity just because it does not like the faces of some of* the people that are importing fuel. Why on earth will buhari reduce the number of companies that are importing fuel. Useless govt.

He screened out companies owned by Easterners and South-South businessmen.

He included MRS (Dantata) family and Oando owned by Wale Tinubu (Bola Tinubu's blood relative)

Even if the government failed to patronize this companies I think the citizens on their own should encourage this companies on our little way by making this brand a top brand in our individual scale of preference.
Furthermore we as individuals should see ourselves as the government.

Lets start forming the government that we always dream of.
Imagine a situation where someone will not patronize Innoson based on ethnic sentiments is sickening.

The change we seek for should start emanating from us as individuals

^^^You see! This is exactly the grin-and- bare-it kinda attitude i don't like amongst our people! You also see it with those 'one Nigeria' freaks of Igbo origin who will tell you to ignore the political/economic configuration of the Nigerian polity, and instead look to our Governors and LGA Chairmen to deliver the goods and lead us to Uhuru!

These peeps don't know that with an all-powerful and all-controlling center, a bigoted Igbo-hating top public servant or politician sitting in Abuja can -with one stroke of the pen- scuttle the plans and years of hard work of all those Igbo-owned businesses you listed up there; and this has been done before so no one should accuse me of paranoia!

Another downside to this negative attitude is that it's quite possible that a xenophobe not willing to see Ndigbo progress faster than his own ethnic group will put policies in place or engage in underhand covert activities to hold those Igbo- owned businesses back so he can prop up the ones from his own region till they manage to catch up!

Yet another negative to this 'ignore-everyone-else-and-look-inwards' attitude is that resources that otherwise could be used to develop Alaigbo now has to shared with the very wicked people that hate our guts; leaving us a miserly 13% to play with! And this is when they've not conspired to slice off resource-rich parts of Alaigbo with surgical precision to place in neighbouring states and managed by non-Igbos, while they work on getting those Igbo they've cut adrift to deny their roots and ethnicity!

Those Igbo state govt's further have their hands tied by policies and the constitution which forbids them from taking control of their own destiny.....esp' with regard to mineral exploitation; aviation; highways; sea and river port investments; policing; etc! It's done this way so no region/zone in the country would have a runaway economic success and thus show up another region/zone for the deadweight it actually is! Not to also mention the fact that with the status-quo the way it presently is, a few govt enabled billionaires and oligarchs can maintain a firm grasp on the resources of others!

I thought that being the first indigenous car manufacturing coy in Nigeria, that INNOSON would have been the first automobile coy to have an audience with the President and take him out to the courtyard to show him a sample of what they do!

You thought so too!?.....Well think again mate! lipsrsealed

Why are issues like these so difficult to address in Nigeria.

Let me modify Chinua Achebe: What a country!

Buhari will only visit Innoson if it is cited in Kano or Kaduna.

@OP - Unfortunately, The problem has little or nothing to do with the FG.

If you are not daft & stupid [No offense meant], you wanted to start-up an Automobile Assembly Plant and instead of you to approach the world's best Auto Engineering Firms in Germany, Russia, or even the American bastards; you chose instead to approach China. China? My friend, forget about mediocrity & the people saying chinese products are affordable - consumers value quality over price.

Now, you want me to patronize you in purchasing an automobile machine that would kill me within 3months? If you have ever driven a Bmw, Audi or Merc before, you would know & understand the reason Y police officers are now going after German machines like the BMWs.

The indigenous people of the eastern jews should lead by example by discarding their Toyotas, Muranos & Mercs and start patronizing Innoson Motors, then the rest of us in Nigeria will follow suit. grin

Lastly, you cannot be heaping loads of insult on the government and making disparaging remarks against other ethic groups in Nigeria on Radio Biafra and expect your business to flourish, commooooon, ancient wisdom teaches us that action begets reaction, cause begets effect, sequence begets consequence - There's no innocence under the Law of Karma. grin

To the poster immediately above this one: you have independent studies/reports to burtress your assertion that INNOSON vehicles are unsafe?

So INNOSON is in partnership with a Chinese company; one would have thought the technology transfer would have been a plus in your books! Apparently not!!

You say you wouldn't buy INNOSON because a few Igbo are bad-mouthing you!?.....Fair enough! But how does a few insults stack up against hundreds of thousands of Igbo slaughtered by your kinsfolk in cold blood in the North? Yet you expect us to not only continue patronising your goods (like Dangote cement) but also to continue sharing the same country with you!?

I really have no time to exchange insults with you. Your inchoate an incoherent post already defines your level of intellect, state of mind, and hatred.

A few .....

1. Who told you the "world's best Auto Engineering Firms" are in Russia? Which alien spaceship just dropped you on planet earth?

2. Did it occur to you that the Chinese copy the Japanese model designs shamelessly? Did it occur to you that the G5 bears uncanny resemblance to RAV4, and that all the earlier models of Hyundai and Daewoo were clones of such Japanese models like Corolla, Camry, RAV4 and Hiace?

3. Look around your home, chances are that your light fittings, electrical appliances, mobile phones, and thousands of components in computers and electronics in "bastard" American brands that you love so much but hate the country of make were manufactured in China. How many of those devices has "killed" you so far?

4. Where did you get the reference to Radio Biafra or disparaging remark against any ethnic group in my original post? Is that another product of your confused mind?

Guy you need to see a psychiatrist fast before it is too late. Yaba left is still accepting inmates.
