Why Muslims Hasten To Bury The Dead? by Aminat508(f): 7:19pm On Nov 23, 2015
Every man has two special days, the day of good which signifies the day we were born and the day of evil which signifies the day we will die. Hence, no one can remove or add a second to the time he was born and the day he will die

Ustaz Mhikail Shittu, an Islamic Teacher in Marcaz Shababul Islam, Lagos in his own view said:

Many people especially the non Muslims have a wrong notion about how we bury corpses in Islam. They believe we hasten to bury our corpses in Islam without following due process as laid down by Allah, which is totally untrue.

There are procedures to follow in Islam before funeral is announced and carried out. In a case where a person dies suddenly, maybe as a result of heart attack (almaut fijihat) in Islam, the first thing we do in Islam is to get a doctor to confirm if the person is dead. If the doctor confirms that the person is dead, then we must close the person’s eyes and render prayers thus:
“O’ Allah, forgive [name of the person] and elevate his rank among those who are guided. Send him along the path of those who came before, and forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Expand for him his grave and shed light upon him in it.”

And inform his relatives and friends about the person’s demise. The next line of action is to UnCloth the corpse and begin to say good things about the dead because the angels will be there to say Amin .

We also have to know if the dead person has any debt or anybody is owing the dead before hastening to bury the person. Then we give the dead a special bath before it is laid to rest. All these put together shows that we do not totally hasten to bury our corpses in Islam.

However, in Islam starting from the time of Prophet Adam, the dead are buried on the same day they die except when the person dies at night because it is wrong to bury the dead at night in Islam.

Leaving a corpse for long before burying is another way of suffering the dead and increasing the pains of their loved ones because the more they see their loved one lying lifelessly, the more they feel bad.

It may cause more havoc — Ustaz Akintoye Ismaeel Adewale (An Islamic Instructor, Engineer)
Islam has taught us the best way to care for our dead ones. When a person leaves this world, he or she does not belong here anymore and so should be given the ticket to board on the next journey which is burying his body.

Aside this, leaving a corpse among the living can cause more havoc to the health of the living especially a dead person that has spent many years on the sick bed.
Burying a corpse almost immediately when he or she dies will not make the dead become a terror to his loved ones as many people get scared and run away from the corpse. It will make the dead rest peacefully.

When the news of death in the family reaches the relatives and friends, the first thing that they should say is Qur’an verse (2:156): “Inna lil-laahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji’oon [Truly! To Allâh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.]”. This du’aa is known in arabic as al-Istirjaa. Also, the hadeeth of Bulugunuromi babajunasat page 105) says not burying a dead person on time means increasing the suffering of the dead especially who has encountered one hardship or the other.

It is not permissible for Muslims to delay the burial in order for the maximum number of relatives to see the deceased, which is common practice among other communities.

Once death is evident, the body should be prepared and taken out of the house for prayer and burial as soon as possible. In this way, contact with the dead body is minimised, which keeps the grief and hurt of seeing the dead down to a minimum. Abu Hurayrah related that the Prophet (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said “Hasten the funeral rites” hadeeth Sahih Al-Bukhari vol.2,p.225.

Also, the Prophet made us to understand that the dead should be buried in the same area where they died. Transporting the body to another area or another country is not permissible if it will unnecessarily delay the burial or cause financial or other hardship.

The Qur’an made us to understand that when a man dies, he is entitled to either paradise or suffering and some angels are already available after his death to give him which ever he is entitled to.

Delaying the burial of a corpse will delay his enjoyment in Paradise and in a case where he is entitled to suffering, the angels will begin to punish him right there in the house and this could affect the living around him negatively.

Another reason we bury our corpse on time in Islam is to adhere to the teachings of Allah.

Questions:

1. What if the person's relatives were staying very far away? Like the dead living in South Africa and his families in Nigeria

2. What's the preferred delay time? In terms of hour
Because I've heard of a case where the dead resurrected after a day or two.

3. What type of cloth is most preferred to clothe the dead after before Janazah?

HAH:
When Prophet mohammed pbuh died he was not buried until a successor khalifa was chosen among his disciple, the process of choosing his successor last one week

@aminat508 what do you say about the above

The Prophet (S.A.W) , passed away on Monday in the month of Rabee’ Al-Awwal, at forenoon. The Companions may Allaah be pleased with them prepared his funeral on Tuesday and placed him on the bed in his room; thereafter, people went in groups to perform funeral prayer upon him. The Prophet (S.A.W) , was buried that night, i.e. before the morning of Wednesday. The details are mentioned in the books of Hadeeth (narrations) and Seerah (the biographies of the Prophet ).

The delay of his burial was for many reasons. Some of them are: no one led the funeral prayer, so people entered in his room in small groups to perform the funeral prayer. They had different opinions before reaching a point of consensus concerning many matters, for instance the manner in which the Prophet , should be washed, the place he should be buried in and the leadership of the Ummah (Muslim nation) after his death, etc.

The death of the Prophet (S.A.W) , was a catastrophic event for the Muslims; they did not immediately recover their senses. The Prophet (S.A.W) , was the most beloved person to them, and this made it nearly impossible for them to bury him. Faatimah may Allaah be pleased with her said to Anas may Allaah be pleased with him “Were you able to put soil on the body of the Prophet , and bear that?”

Allaah Knows best.

It is recommended to use white sheets from inexpensive material. Extravagance is not recommended in the Kafan. Al- Kafan means ( (Shrouding the body of a dead Muslim)

The Kafan of a male should consist of three white winding sheets about(7 x 7 feet), clean and large enough to conceal the whole body, after having been perfumed with incense. Use 4 tie ropes, each 7 feet long

The Kafan of a female should consist of five white garments, (Two winding sheet, a long loose sleeveless shirt (From shoulder to feet), a waist wrapper, and a head veil ), these should be large enough to cover the whole body and may be perfumed with incense, a loin cloth may be used to bind the upper part of her legs, use 4 tie ropes, each one is 7 feet long

Then, SALATUL JANAZAH (funeral prayer) lastly, Al-Dafan (The Burial)

Sharing this fiqh:

**********************************************************
2. WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WHEN A PERSON PASSES AWAY

2.1 When a person passes away, his or her eyes should be closed immediately.

2.2 Tie a piece of cloth (material) from the chin to the head. This is to keep the mouth from remaining open.

2.3 Cover him or her with a sheet.

Make preparations for the Ghusl (Bath), Kaffan, Burial order, Janazah Salaah and the actual burial. These acts for the deceased are all "Fard-i-Kifaayah" (A compulsory action which is to be performed by all, however if a few persons perform these duties, then the responsibility is waived off the others. If these are not carried out by anyone, then all responsible are sinners).

All expenses for the deceased must be taken from the estate of the deceased. If the deceased did not have any such estate, then the responsibility is on his next of kin, eg. father, mother, sons, brothers, etc. If none of these relatives are available, or if they are too poor, then the expenses should come from the organisation responsible for the welfare of the community. If no such organisation is in existence, then every member of the congregation must contribute towards the expenses incurred to the best of their means.

The body of the deceased must be covered with a cloth (Sheet) before removing his or her clothing. Those people who remove the clothes, must be careful not to allow the Satr-i-Awrah (parts that are Fard to be covered - navel to knee for men, and from the neck to ankles for women) to be uncovered. After this has been done, proceed with the Ghusl of the deceased.
