it was never right. The ghanaian cedi is 50 cedis to 1 Naira, but obviously their economy is way better than ours. A country can peg it's currency to whatever it wants. That does not mean it's economy is vibrant. And for your information in 1981 Nigeria was experiencing what it is experiencing today. Corruption, salaries not being paid, fuel scarcity, poor power generation, bad roads etc. So, don't deceive yourself. It was never good.

If you noticed carefully, you'll see that it's not really that Naira was strong but more about dollar being weak due to the USA experiencing a recession, even currencies like the Australian dollar and Canadian dollar(Countries with poor economy during the 80s) held their value against the dollar. Not until the second year of Ronald Reagan's presidency did the U.S dollar rebound, coincidentally the Naira began losing its value around the same period from 1984 t0 1993, the Naira witnessed the most dramatic loss in value followed by 2011 to present date.

It wen wrong during IBB era. His structural adjustment programme SAP was the last straw that broke our horse's back. It witnessed massive collapse of manufacturing sector, mass unemployment corruption on a large scale and devaluation of the naira

Ask BABANGIDA and OBJ

BABANGIDA spareheaded it.
OBJ legalized it.
They have perpetually made sure this country remained arid and stagnant

It is a monumental curse for the wailers. They must wail even when there is no reason to or if they don't know the reason.

At times when we are told about how the Naira had more value than the Dollar inthe Eighties,we take it with a pinch of salt. Today i saw a proof in my house with my very own eyes...
An old Book written in the Eighties, with the prize of the book in some countries currencies. The Naira was among these currencies(clearly because it was among the big bills then)...
Note the date and the prize in Naira and Dollar and Pound..

Once upon a time!

Corruption changed the story!

That doesn't mean that was the exchange range then. But though it determines, sometimes commodities are sold cheaper in some places(even farther places from product origin)
