.
Ongoing fuel scarcity in the country may assume
a new dimension as workers under the Nigeria
Labour Congress, NLC, are warming up for a
national protest against the inability of the
government to end the perennial scarcity in the
country .
.
The workers complained of worsening harsh
economic condition complicated by the
persistent fuel scarcity and unaffordable
transport fares to their offices.
.
It was learnt that the workers’ union executives
have been meeting to discuss the problem and
mobilise members towards industrial action and
make their feelings known to the national
executive council of NLC on the need for action
over the plight of workers in view of the
difficulties occasioned by fuel scarcity.
.
Some union leaders, while speaking with
journalists on condition of anonymity yesterday,
warned that if nothing urgent is done to end the
fuel scarcity there would be a national protest to
end the sufferings of the masses.
.
Oyo State Chairman of NLC , Comrade Waheed
Olojede, while speaking on the plight of workers
in the state, described the prevailing fuel scarcity
in the country as a national calamity.
.
He urged the government at all tiers to urgently
take action to end the perennial fuel scarcity,
stressing that it has brought workers to their
knees.
.
He explained that workers in the state could no
longer go to their offices because of increased
transport fares and attendant effect on the
economy of the workers especially when the
workers were not paid their salaries when due.
.
According to him, the union is discussing on how
to handle the crisis if nothing urgent is done by
the government to end the suffering of Nigerians,
especially the workers.
.
The NLC also charged the Nigerian Governors’
Forum to do the needful and stop playing with
the lives of Nigerians.
.
The workers called on the governors to discuss
how best to find a lasting solution to the perennial
fuel scarcity in the country, rather than discuss
pay cut at a time when Nigerian workers were
suffering.
