Louis van Gaal has shuffled his pack regularly at left-back since Shaw’s broken leg but even the Dutchman admits he’s short on options

It didn’t take long for the severity of Luke Shaw’s injury to hit Manchester United. Moments after his horrific leg break in the Champions League loss at PSV, concerns grew over the way United were being exploited down their left flank.

United face the Dutch champions again on Wednesday but even Louis van Gaal admits his side have not come to terms with Shaw’s absence. Since that forgettable night in September a total of five players have filled in on the left side of defence for United, but not one of them have proved to be the long-term solution.

For his part, Shaw continues to recover well. Making full use of the club’s state-of-the-art physiotherapy and hydrotherapy facilities, he has pleased medics and staff alike with his progress as well as his positive attitude. But Van Gaal is still refusing to put pressure on the 20-year-old by setting any target for a first-team return.

“I cannot answer because you have to be very cautious,” Van Gaal told reporters on Tuesday when asked regarding an update on Shaw. “With an injury like that it can be going very well, then one week it goes very bad and then you are months behind.

“But he is going well. He has four days off because he was getting fed up with the routine. Then on Friday he has a scan and we will know more how he is doing.

“He was fed up with the daily routine, and I thought maybe he was fed up because it was PSV and he had to sit and watch.”
