Barewa College remains an enigmatic institution in the North.

As at 1921, biafrats were still chasing grass cutters in the bush while northerners were building western schools that would span generations.

And the physical condition of the school is most despicable, almost to the point of disbelief! You dont expect any serious academic pursuit in such despicable environment. To say even a single person among the old boys has the means to turn things around for the school to reclaim its lost glory, will be an understatement. And so it is that Barewa College fell from its enviable position as a foremost public school to one of the worst schools in Nigeria! Shame on the old boys!

By contrast the South, invaded by missionaries, the
precursors of mass-education, soon developed an avid
thirst for education in all its forms. By 1967 when the
Eastern Region pulled out of Nigeria it alone had more
doctors, lawyers and engineers than any other country in
Negro Africa. Missionary work in the North which might
have eased that area into the twentieth century was
effectively stopped by Lugard at the request of the Emirs
when he pledged to discourage Christian apostolic work
north of the Kabba Line." - Frederick Forsyth (pre-independence British journalist and author).

You will not like it, I tell you. Since private schools are now available, the mandarins have abandoned their Alma mater.

It is quite sad, really. The management of the school have not effectively tapped into their old boys' alumni network, in order to improve the fortunes of the school. I have relatives that went to that school, and they still speak about the great time they had there. sad

Nah! It was regarded as Nigeria's equivalent of Eton in Harrow, UK. But that was in the good old days, when it was still going strong. cheesy

You are so-o-oo right. So did some of my older relatives. They attended the school on govt scholarship, too. In their days, Barewa had great facilities and a fantastic reputation. cheesy

what about Government college Umuahia, established by Rev. Robert Fisher. methodist college Uzuakoli 1921, by the missionary. And funny enough, it wasn't dagger weilding ALHAJI this or shiek that, that established the Berawa College, but one missionary with Christian orientation.

People like El-Rufai who is an old boy, should mobilise funds to transform the school. He has enough money to overhaul the school all by himself, if he chooses to do so. Now that he is Governor of that same state where Barewa is located, let us hope he would take steps to improve the fortunes of the school. sad

Professor Patrick Obasi who was once the Director-General of the World Meteorological Association also graduated from Barewa College. At least, there are 49 ex-students of the school who eventually became top professors. Chief Raymond Ihyembe who was once MD of the defunct Afribank as well as some of his ex-colleagues who attended Barewa should also be able to chip their bit, to help the school. There are also 18 former Ambassadors listed among the old boys of the institution. They should be able to come together to improve the fortunes of the school. undecided
